" Nice resort, decent complex "
Submitted By: Bren01777The pool area could probably do with a bit of a makeover and I think the complex is scheduled to close in May for a refurbishment when it will re-open as a Thomson Family Extra resort. At present it is a Nordotel controlled by Tui so there is a heavy Scandanavian presence in both the staff and the guests, but this was no bad thing as we found the Swedes and Norwegians around the pool to be very courteous and friendly.
The complex is located in a great position close next to the sea with a lovely little beach nearby. There are nice walks along the coastal path from the lighthouse to Papagayo and Playa Blanca itself is a clean, friendly little fishing resort with plenty of restaurants and shops.
Three minor niggles....1. the breakfast was organised chaos. Apparently they were running down staff in readiness for the refurbishment closure, so tables were left uncleared and there was a lot of stress amongst the existing waiters. 2. I like the room to be made up every day, but it was every other day here. 3. The exchange rate made everything hideously expensive. Some examples...3-5 euros for a pint of lager, 2-3 euros for an ice lolly, average evening meal for 2 adults, one child with one drink was anything from 35-50 euro's depending on what you ate. Watch out for the restaurant opposite the beach at ground floor level -the childrens meal is 8 euro's fifty cents for sausage chips and a drink.Go to the steakhouse upstairs and its 3 euros fifty and there's a bouncy castle for the kids.
All in all a very enjoyable holdiay for a week and after a small refurbishment what are pretty decent standards already can only get better.
Advice: Lovely, quiet, safe resort, free from lager louts. Papagayo is the more exclusive end.
Activities: Varedero in Playa Blanca is a nice restaurant. Recommend The Jumbo for Chinese food.

Submitted By: Mrs N WhiteBad points: Very rowdy by the pool (sometimes felt like an 18-30s resort!!) - the music blared all day with the same records being constantly played. It was so loud it was distorted. All the sunbeds had gone by 9am. Not one spare. Instead we would go to the beach opposite but you could still hear the music blaring and Rachel (rep) screaming down the microphone!! A couple next to us at the beach (who weren't staying there) commented about how noisey and rowdy our hotel was!
After 5 days we moved to another complex as the apartment next door was having building work done (which we didn't know about). Our new complex was lovely as we could wonder down at lunchtime and there were lots of sunbeds!! And no distorted music. Bliss.

Submitted By: Mr S TaylorWhat you are paying for is what we've just had - I just put my 4yr old into her own bed, and she asked me why we couldn't stay in Lanzarote forever! Priceless!
With one exception (who I won't name - I made a formal complaint to Thomson, and I won't be alone!) the Thomson staff were excellent - from cabin crew through to the fabulous "Rave-on" Rachel Johnston in resort.
I do have to say that my wife & I did feel conspicuous pool-side thanks to our lack of tattoo's, piercings, essex face-lifts, and kids called "Britney" or "Chardonnay" - But then we're just snobs!! ;o)
Seriously - If you're thinking about booking this resort - and you've got a fair idea about what you should be expecting - then Go 4 it - I doubt very much that you'll regret it!

Submitted By: Ms A AscroftNow the bad news!! the pool was too small for the size of the complex. It only opened at 9am and the sun loungers were chained off, with hotel security making sure no one snuck in before that time!! It caused a queue and a manic rush when the chains were removed, something like the opening of a jumble sale doors.
As it was a superfamily hotel, the pool area was taken over by reps, organised games and rubbish music all day, every day. We spent £120 on sun loungers at the beach just to get a bit of peace. Dont get me wrong, i am not a misery by any means, but the Thompson the dog song 20 times a day would have most adults running for the valium!!
The entertainment at night was also geared toward young children and there was nothing for teenagers to do, apart from the internet in hotel reception ( the whole point is to drag them away from spending all their time on MSN like they do at home isnt it? :-) )
The beach (if you could call it one) was quite small and the sand had apparantly been washed away in a storm a few years before. So the pictures you see in the brochure must be quite old ones. It was very rocky and the stones were sharp underfoot, so take some flip flops or beach shoes. We were told that the sand is due to be replaced next year?
We went all inclusive which was apparantly new for this season. the food in the restaurant was ok. It was self service and there was quite a good choice. However getting hot food had to be timed right!! I would recommend taking the all inclusive option if you have a family, as it can get quite expensive eating out. We went to the Chinese a bit further down from the complex a couple of times and the food was nice.
We also went on a few Trips, booked through the Rep, Rancho Texas is quite a good half day and the trip on a sub was a good experience.
Overall i would say that the apartments are nice, the staff are excellent, the food is ok and Playa blanca is a nice place. Dont bother to go there if you have teenagers, as there is nothing for them to do, or if you want to relax by the pool ,because you have no chance (unless you have years of experience of jumble sale scuffles)

Submitted By: Mr J WoodThe appts were just about ok if you like single beds or a sofa bed, thats it,no choice,i did ask for another room but was told i was 'up-graded' already!
On a safety note,is it wise to have a sink 3" from an elecrtic hob,i do not think so.not a good mix really.
Playa Blanca is great, our third visit, but please stay away from this hotel!!

Submitted By: Other Tank&Cath AdamsFrom the excellent welcome meeting on our first day we were entertained all through the day myself and husband, nicknamed "Tank" by the pool playing water polo, games etc and our 2 daughters Megan (7) and Grace (5) in the fab kidzone. We cannot thank the kidzone reps enough for all there hard work the kids loved it, big up to Crazy Karen, Nic Nac, Loopey Laine, Jazzy Jade and Yummy Yasmin. The evening entertainment was great "Dan the Man" and " Rave on Rachel" have untold amounts of energy and they never fail to impress you with there whit etc.
The Apartments are clean and comfortable and regularly cleaned by friendly staff, we were in 79B right at the far end of the complex on the edge of a public path, but we never felt for one minute unsafe.
The service didn't end at the resort though and the rep Team Leader "Super Sarah" was a fantastic help at the airport when checking in.
I would strongly recommend this holiday to anyone with a young family who is up for a laugh and I would definately book a Thomson Super Family Resort Again it was fantastic.
