Fun in the sun
from bigben01
We stayed at the Pericles for the first 2 weeks of june this year and reading some of the reviews on here before we went to Kefalonia we was prepared for the first weeks clouds and rain !!!. we were on an allocation on arrival package holiday and was very happy with our allocation. The hotel was was very clean and inviting. The walk into Sami at night was in parts without street lighting but a nice walk to burn off the meal on the way home and also a friendly wag of a tail from the dog at the petrol station broke up the walk. The pool area was very clean and tidy , the pool was an absloute must the 2nd week as the weather improved and we had 9 days of beautiful sunshine. I would recommend this hotel and Sami if people are looking for a quite holiday as the atmosphere is very relaxed and low key. Sami has a harbour front full of Tavernas and and Restaurants all fighting for your custom but they do not differ too much in choice and price. The only down side to our holiday was the Pericles and Thomas Cook do not provide a room on departure day for people wanting to change clothes as it is a 10am checkout and with people having a late flight on that day it could be a long wait in the sun !!!!.
lovely village and harbour

Me and my boyfriend (aged 21 & 22) stayed at the Pericles in Sami for a week from the 17th june for my birthday. The weather was very hot (temperature normally in the forties in August) and although the beaches were pebbly in and around Sami, the sea was really clear and fantastic to swim in or go snorkelling. Having read other reviews about the walk from the hotel into Sami, we were quite wary but this is not at all a problem. It is a pleasant walk of an evening when the sun has gone down and as long as you keep to the main road it is very safe and well lit. We visited Myrtos beach which cost us 20 Euros in a taxi (approx 20mins drive) and also Antisammos beach which was 9-12 Euros (10mins drive). Myrtos beach is apparently the third best beach in the world, but we have been to some fantastic beaches in the Caribbean in previous years and found the beach at Antisammos much nicer. Also a very nice restaurant there on the beach which we visited twice for lunch. Sami is a very quiet part of the island and i would recomend car hire to those staying 14 nights as it is very safe to drive on the roads unlike in some countries!! Mermaid and Dolphin Restaurants were our favourites and the prices are very reasonable at most restaurants on the harbour. In our room we had twin beds and a shower room but some rooms do have doubles and with a bath. Swim towels were not provided and neither did we have a tv, iron or air conditioning until they switched it on on our fourth day. There is a tv in the lobby area with lots of sky channels as my boyfriend found on the last day after being told that it only had sky news and was not able to turn it over. Overall we had a fantastic time in Sami, and although the hotel was very basic it was also very clean and the majority of the staff were friendly and happy to help.
Fabulous holiday!

We stayed at the Pericles Hotel between 3rd-10th June 2007 and we were delighted! The hotel was spotlessly clean and the staff were very helpful. The pool and surrounding areas were also very clean and both the hotel bar and pool bar did fantastic cheese and ham toasties which kept us happy! The breakfast at the hotel each morning was basic but good - bread, ham, cheese, hard boiled eggs and cereal plus the usual tea, coffee and orange juice so you were well set up for the day! The walk into Sami takes approx. 15-20 minutes or if you want to explore further - hire a car. We hired a car from the centre of Sami (Karavomilos Car Hire) for 25 euros per day, which was considerably cheaper than the quote from the rep. We travelled with Thomas Cook and the rep at the Hotel (Hayley) was really nice and helpful. Be warned though - the hotel does a Karaoke night on a Friday which we all enjoyed (I think we were a little over enthusiastic after having consumed too much vino)! All in all we had a fantastic time and would definitely return to this hotel in the future.
Sami is great, Pericles Hotel very laid back and relaxing
from Holsaregreat
We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Pericles in Sami. We had a fabulous time, loved the peace and quiet and the people are lovely. The country walk into Sami was wonderful, lots of wild flowers, lemon and lime trees and small farmyards were absolutely charming. Also the daily view and sounds of the shepherd herding the sheep past the hotel on the main road was a sight to behold, you heard the bells of the animals first so you could get to your balcony to watch. The hotel was great, very clean and the staff were very friendly even though they had limited English (not a criticism we are just too lazy). The receptionist Nina was lovely and very helpful, I had lots of questions, she never got tired of my curiosity and made us very welcome. Spiros the bar man was also very friendly we had lots of interesting conversations with him over a few drinks. The pool bar man seems to have come under fire in previous reviews, but we found him very friendly, no deep conversations but always a friendly wave when we seen him. Stelios (hotel Manager) was lovely and always welcoming, o.k. he closed the bar at 12.30 but that suited us fine. he runs a very tight ship and it shows in the running and cleanliness and service of the hotel. We can't wait to return we thoroughly wound down and relaxed. It's not a lively holiday, so if you are looking for wild times and late boozy club nights this is not for you. The tavernas in Sami served excellent quality food, don't judge the bars and cafes by the outside, go in and have a look, you will be very surprised. There was lots of choice for food all day, from breakfasts to cakes, lunches, snacks and giros pittas to full meals. We can't wait to go back!
great island, average hotel
from davidor4307
I think i would agree with most of what has already been written. It is a basic but clean hotel, the staff aren't unpleasant but at the same time dont go out of their way to help. The guy who owns the pool bar is miserable but then again i would be if i spent all day flipping burgers and serving drinks to ungrateful tourists. The town of sami is a charming place and the scenery is beautiful, that said it is very quiet and it can feel if you have seen everything there after a couple of days. The local taverners are excellent, i couldn't criticise any of them. The best piece of advise would be to hire a car, its relatively cheap and you get to see the amazing scenery around the rest of the island. A word of caution though the greeks are suicidal drivers, you will see things on the roads there that will make your hair stand on end.
quiet and remote
from clarktoppcat
Kephelonia is a very scenic but quiet island and beware is probably the most expensive of the greek islands as I have been to a few of the islands and found the cost of food and car hire more expensive. Sami again is a very scenic resort but there is very little to do there. A day visit would be adequate but to stay a week without a car you would struggle for entertainment. There are a handful of taverns on the front which serve great food and are highly recomended although after your evening meal there are no bars or anything to entertain you and you will find yourself just heading back to the bar at the hotel. Hotel Pericles is located a 20 minute walk from the centre of Sami along a busy road although there are no paths it is well lit at night and as long as you are careful there is no problem. It was in fact nice to walk back to the hotel on a night and there is a back route that avoides the road but is not lit at night so only go this way in the day. The hotel is very clean and has a huge pool which is a big plus but the positives end there. The pool bar is very expensive and the man who serves behind the bar is very miserable. Everything he did seemed like a effort and he was never pleased to serve you. Also the food is egg or burger and chips at the pool bar they make no effort to serve you with any greek food other than a salad. The bar in the hotel is ok but agan the barman although freindly lacks any kind of personality. In fact the only member of staff to show any interest in you was the nice reception lady. The hotel manager was around but never spoke to you or had the slightist bit of intrest in you. The hotel although had a quiz night never attempted to make it a holiday for you they are just going through the motions it is a shame as there is so much oppertunity there. We did one trip the jewles of kephalonia and it was excellent. The tour guide really made a effort which was a refreshing change from the hotel she give us so much info and I would highly recomend it. Would I go back? to kepholnia maybe, to pericles definately not.You definately need to hire a car to get anything from a holiday here and if bars are your thing then forget it. Sami again is ok as long as you have a car otherwise you will be stranded the hotel is in a word is Dull best entertainment at the hotel is sky news on a tv that is only put on at the staff descrection and often turned off just when you are watching. A bit of music entertainment and different staff would make a huge difference. Note they no longer serve food in a evening as there was little demand but dont worry the taverns in Sami are grest.
We love Kefalonia
from Rach64
We booked a last minute week at the Pericles in October. We decided to stay half board (mainly not knowing what the weather would be like and not wanting to walk too far if there was heavy rain). However - the weather was fantastic for the whole week. The hotel, is in a lovely location with views all around. It takes about 10 minutes to walk into Sami (no footpath) - torch would be recommended for nighttime. Half-board - the greek specials and salads were very good in the evenings although everything else was a little repetitive. We would go back again, tho' maybe not half board as even in the last week of the season restaurants in Sami were still open.
Brilliant Holiday.

Myself and my partner went out to Kefalonia as an extremely last inute holiday. We booked on the Thursday and left on the Sunday. So with this in mind we werent expecting a very good hotel, or room. But we were very surprised. We had a balcony which granted, was overlooking the car park, but looking beyone that were the most amazing views of the mountains surrounding that side of the hotel. It was a much better view than the pool view would have provided us. The room was clean and comfortable and was tidyed every morning by the maids. The breakfast was typical continental style, although you could ask for a cooked breakfast at a price. When it comes to dinner i would reccommend to eat out at the Taverna's in Sami. They serve delicious food at great prices, which are much cheaper than the hotel itself. I also suggest that you go on the excursions organised by your rep, if you ont you will surely regret it. So take more money with you to pay for them.
Beautiful Place.

On June 4th this year we visited Pericles Hotel in Kefalonia. have never been to any of the Greek Islands, but having seen the film Captain Correllis Mandolin, I wanted to see the place. I had been told, this particluar hotel had been used during the filimng of C.C.M., so I was very interested to see this hotel.. The location of this hotel is totally stunning, the backdrop surrounded by mountains. The hotel is quite basic, but beautifully clean. The barman , I do believe his name is Alec, is both entertaining and efficient.. I really cannot fault this hotel. The breakfast was basic, but there ws enough to eat at all times. We did pay for evening meals on two occasions, but I would recommend walking into Sami, for a wonderful choice of meals. The pool is about 20 yards from the hotel grounds, this is beautiful and clean and overlooks the mountains. The walk to Sami from the hotel is about 12 minutes, this is a beautiful, quiet walk through lanes, where you will pass the local farmers, and goats and the tinkling of bells. I would suggest you take a taxi back to the hotel after about 10pm in the evening, as there is very little lighting through the winding lanes. If you decide to walk to Sami along the main road, this is quicker, but as there is very little pavement, it ismuch safer and prettier to walk through the country lanes. Kefalonia is a truly stunning place, it is very much underestimated in my opinion. The beaches are amazing, one such beach is Antisamos Beach. Thi beach is about 1-1/2 hours walk from Sami. This may seem an awfully long walk, but believe me, people who like to walk wil love it because the scenery is stunning. For people who dont like to walk, a taxi will cost about 8 eurosfrom the hotel to the beach.. Annother recommended place to visit Agia Efimia, this is about 18 euros and is well worth a visit. I strongly recommend Kefalonia, we certainly will be visiting again. The weather was quite chilly for June, I believe the best time to visit is about last week in June ..and onwards... The food is good, and the waiters, at the various restaurants on the harbour in Sami, couldnt be more helpful. After every meal we were offered free brandy or a pernod. The whole experience in Kefalonia was something I will never forget...

We have stayed at this hotel on 3 occassions and have always had a great time. The complaints you see on this and other web sites should be taken with a large pinch of salt. Yes the hotel is basic, but then this is greece. The breakfast is always the same, but it does the... more
