The hotel is centrally located for beach, bars, restaurants and clubs. Rooms are clean and a good size. Breakfast was an added bonus. Whilst I stayed there with my kids, the holidaymakers were very friendly and a birthday party was organised by one of the holidaymakers... more

a jigge jigge hotel (al"E")

The Horizon 'Turkish Fawlty Towers'
Me and my husband have just returned from a two week stay at the Horizon hotel. We have been to Turkey enough times to know to expect fairly basic accommodation but the places we have stayed have always been clean. Unfortunately the Horizon lived up to the bad reviews we read about it just before going on our holiday. I think we were lucky to have experienced a big thunderstorm during our stay as it was the only time our floors got properly cleaned and that was down to the fact we were flooded out and staff had to sweep the water out of our room. This was after we had been woken up with no more than a phonecall at about 5.30am asking if there was any water in our room. Along with another family we had to just stand by while our rooms were dealt with without so much as a smile from the miserable owner or offer of a coffee downstairs until it was all sorted out. If we were lucky our waste bin in the bathroom was emptied each day but nothing else was touched apart from a quick wipe over of the balcony. It really was disgusting. We never used the pool as we had read of people getting infections from it plus the area around didn't look very appealing. We tried very hard to keep a sense of humour about things, it didn't really matter that a handle was missing off one of the wardrobe doors, there was no rubbish bin, no pillows on our bed when we first arrived and when we asked if we could have some was told it was too late they had been locked up and we'd have to wait until the next day. Breakfast was always good for a laugh as we settled down to the same monotonous round of bread, jams, cheese, cucumber and tomatoes everyday, oh and mustn't forget the eggs. The highlight was cornflakes being served on Tuesdays and Fridays. There was even a sign stating this just in case anyone should dare to expect them on all the other days. It was hard not to laugh as people came down to breakfast and the looks on their faces said it all. This hotel really seemed a Turkish "Fawlty Towers" the way it was run. Crumbs left on the tables and dirty ashtrays and food not kept topped up so people would have to wait around often asking for more, it all seemed so unorganised and shoddy. Our stay at the Horizon was so different from all our other experiences of holidays in Turkey. No cleanliness, no friendliness, needless to say we won't be returning or recommending it.
Horizon HoHell!!
Having arrived at the hotel to a sour-faced reception, we can only say that things could only get worse. The "breakfasts" consisted of smelly, sweatty cheese, olives and eggs. The drinks in the bar cost far more than anywhere else and although the temperature was 37oC, they had no ice for two weeks. You took your drink around the pool, and after 5 minutes it was boiling hot. They never had any change in the bar, instead, the change was offered to you in small bottles of water per New Turkish Lira. The entertainment was non-existant, except for the hotel staff causing commotions with the other guests. The electricity randomly went off frequently, and they continue as though nothing has happened. One particular day, it went off for five hours, so there was no electric or water, and the staff from the hotel marched onto the pavement outside and started digging the road up outside. One particular member of staff walked around in his vest all day insulting the other members and also the guests. The air conditioning, which we had to pay £45 for, also broke and leaking into the room and also the balcony. It had to be 'repaired' twice by a member of staff with a knife. The pool had far too much chlorine in it, and had floating bits of turd. I will never set foot in this hotel again. And neither should anybody else.
The Worst Hotel in Altinkum
Having arrived at the hotel, the staff were, in general, not interested. Within 30 mins, they took a travellers cheque and cashed it, with the wrong signatures. As previously written, the staff spoke with very poor english, and the management were rude, to say the least. Our group also witnessed a domestic dispute. The rules of the hotel were stringent and the "no food or drink from outside" was displayed everywhere, indeed the manageress checked bags of residents to ensure this was adhered to. The swimming pool, again, had too much chlourine. The cleaners were adequate and the rooms were "cleaned" (mopped) once a day. Uynes the night manager attempted to rip off our group with inflated prices on rounds of drinks (22ytl for first round, 27ytl for second). He was also very sleazy towards the female members of our group, and indeed "invited" himself into our group photos. It seemed the Turkish residents were treated in a more complimentary manner than the British. I for one will never visit Turkey again, far less the Horizon Hotel.
don't go!!!
This is a family run hotel and the family running it have no idea of how to treat paying guests. they have arguments in the middle of reception (knocking down a cleaner during one argument), they check your bags when you return each day to make sure you are not bringing food and drink in, they never smile or speak to you, they rip you off in the bar (£1.50 for small juice, £4.50 for vodka & coke), they never have change in the bar so you just don't get change, the room was fine and clean but the towels are only changed twice weekly unless you soak them and leave them in the bottom of the shower. They charged the rest of my group between £40 and £45 for air conditioning but I was charged over £50 because I paid in Turkish Lira. The swimming pool is dirty despite geing overloaded with chlorine - I had to get both eye drops and ear drops due to infection - the Pharmacist who was located beneath the hotel said it was the pool - I spoke to other guests who were also being treated. The brochure said there was evening entertainement - there was none. One of my group had to wake the barman up one night to get a drink as they were sleeping on the sofa in reception. the pool table was also advertised as being free - it is not!!! I have been so utterly disappointed in this hotel that it has put me off returning to Turkey. This is in no way a 3 star hotel - don't risk your hard earned cash - go somewhere else!!!
disappointed in the Horizon hotel
My family and I went to the Horizon Hotel this year as we had been there in 2002 and had heard it had been upgraded since then, yes the rooms had been decorated but unfortunately the cleanliness of the rooms wasnt so good , we were five days there before the bedlinen was changed and had to eventually throw the towels outside the door before we got clean ones, then we had to speak to the nightshift manager before we got the rooms cleaned, sorry to say we will not be patronising the said hotel again, and listening to the complaints of guests every morning in the dining room I doubt if a lot of other people will, which is very sad as the staff were lovely, so I think the owners must have a good long look at the way they run their hotel and think about their guests.
Never again!!!
Our family of ten have just returned from Al Tinkum where we stayed at the Horizon Hotel. Looking at the other reviews, I can only say that these people must have been staying at another hotel called the Horizon. Yes, the staff were very friendly. Some of them too friendly. The night manager made a habit of asking women residents to buy him vodka. I have to say that the other members of staff were very friendly and helpful. As for the rooms, they were about the size of a rabbit hutch with no drawers in which to put your clothes. After one week, we had to ask to have them cleaned, and the beds and towels changed. My room on the third floor had a constant smell of sewage in it. There was no entertainment and occassionaly the lights were turned off at 10.45pm if you were just sitting talking and not buying alcohol. Breakfast was okay if you liked cucumber, salty cheese, boiled eggs and grated carrot every morning. If you wanted a glass of orange juice or milk, you were expected to pay for it. Coffee was instant coffee and the tea was from an urn. Yuck!! There were many complaints from the residents with one group of 6 people who actually walked out after their second day and found accommodation elsewhere. Other than that, I would return to Al Tinkum as I found the Turkish people to be very friendly, but.........I would never return the to Horizon Hotel.
It's only got better
Me and my husband stayed in the horizon hotel in August 2004 that was our 5th time in that hotel and i can only say over the years it has only got better the STAFF were so friendly the ROOMS were better than before.ALL in all we just love it there.

just got back and havnt got a bad word pool is clean staff are freindly and so helpful with everything he rooms are very clean and just the right size and its jus 1 min to the shops resturants and beach it was great and will def be going back!
Loved It.
we had a stay in sep last. The rooms were spacious and the staff were very helpful. we made great friends with an Ali Oldamez who works nights there. The hotel is in the heart of the town and only a 2 min walk from the beach. There are loads of bars and resturants on your doorstep, with a good shopping mall across the way. The beach is very clean and soft sand. Safe for children to swim. I would certanly recomend the hotel, very clean, and excelent service. We liked altinkum that much we have bought an appartment at the oasis holiday village. Denise and Neil North Wales.
