It is good to see that the hotel is being refurbished, especially the bathrooms, but still a long way to go! Family rooms rather small! House keeping still needs improving; drawers not clean; table tops anfd furniture need a wash. Staff excellent; nothing a bother to... more

Arriving at the Red Lea hotel all looked superb. Having stayed in a B+B before in Scarborough (The Boundary hotel) we were a little dubious of what to expect, and more so if we'd have the same nightmares as last time. I was very pleasantly surprised. I managed to get parked... more

Old Peoples Care Home
Having read the reviews, we still went ahead and booked. Outside hotel looks ok, but inside it is deary, reminded me of a Care Home I looked at once for my parent. Would not stop at Red Lea ever again in fact would not visit Scarborough again, too much like Blackpool in parts. Also in my opinion the hotel is over priced.
great stay at The Red Lea
We stayed over Easter at the Hotel .Found the staff fantastic especially Maria on reception nothing was to much trouble for her. The room (208) was a family room with bay window were we relaxed overlooking the sea the room itself was great only fault was the small bathroom with carpet on the floor and plastic glasses needs a full refurbishment !! Stayed half board food was tasty and filling not cordon blu but o k the position of the hotel is perfect for town, beach, and the cliff lift to take you down (and UP) to the beach no evening entertainment don't know if that's good or bad the staff made up for the short falls
warm and welcoming
We recently had an overnight stay at the Red Lea whilst visiting family in the area. The hotel was a little gem: warm and welcoming, the staff were friendly but not too personal. I had expected a dated and worn room but was really surprised when entering out allocated room (308), found it to be of a standard equal to any 3 star hotel and even some 4 stars. (we do travel regularly). The decor was obviously new but very smart, we had a large double bed and a big bay window with amazing views over the sea. The public areas were warm (bitterly cold outside) and on our day of departure we had a lovely breakfast with as much tea and toast as we could manage. I would encourage anyone visiting Scarborough to give the Red Lea a call. If they are full and cannot accommodate you, call in and see them when your in the area: the standard of the accommodation and the proportion of the bedrooms is very impressive.
Good location resonably priced.
A very good location near Spa Complex and quite good free street parking. A bit old fashioned but comfortable. The hotel seems to be going through a period of refurbishment. Our room (112) had been completely renewed. Bathroom, bed, decor, furnishing, flat screen TV. We had a good view over the front of the hotel. We paid £90 per night for a double room with breakfast. Dinner was £13 per person extra and quite adequate though by no means cordon bleu.
Well worth a visit
2nd visit within 2 months. Well run ,pleasant ,helpful staff, lovely rooms especially the ones with sea view , good food. well worth a visit . We will return .
dont stay in thes hotel
Four of us stayed in this hotel for one night , thank god it was one night . it was smelly and dirty . the pool was dirty all the rooms needed up dateing. and the breakfast i would not give to a dog . this one night cost £ 180 every one would expect some thing better for the price we paid.
rock n roll weekender
we enjoyed our stay at this hotel, the staff on the reception were very pleasant and helpful, the meals were excellent, the Turkish waiter who looked after us had a lovely smile and a sence of humour and made meal time even more enjoyable, the rooms were clean and tidy if in need of some refurbishment...we will stay here again...
The Red Lea is okay
I stayed here with my parents, they had a double room, I had a single one. We have booked this hotel a few times, because it is in a convenient location for us whilst we are visiting family in Scarborough. The last time we stayed here (Dec 2005) we were surprised to find that there was no shower in the double room, only a bath!. I know that it is somewhat of a European culture - thing to have a shower, but I am afraid that myself and my family all expect hotels to have showers in this day and age!. We all use showers at home, it's not very environmentally friendly to always have a bath. Unfortunately, the Red Lea gave my parents no other option than to do this. The rooms are ok, a bit dated. A refurbishment wouldn't be a bad idea, for both the rooms and the bathrooms. The hotel can give residents a parking permission slip, which means that with this you can park virtually in front of the hotel. The breakfast was okay, nothing special. We had to ask for warm toast on two days, as they brought us cold toast (not nice!). They did cook breakfast to order and there was also plenty of different cereals available. The front desk appears to be a bit untidy, not the best first impression to give your guests. The bar was very quiet at night, prices were not over the top. The swimming pool looked lovely, however we did not find time to have a swim. I would give it a 7 out of 10.
red lea not a place to stay
We stayed at the red lea hotel as part of a coach trip . we found the staff somewhat helpful, yet after hearing a conversation between what seemed to be a friend of the barman we soon began to think that the owner was himself a greedy and penny pinching man . The room we stayed in was very smelly and indeed we were glad that we only payed what we had . We ordered a newspaper only to find that when we went to collect it the night porter was was being given a dressing down ( my husband made the comment that had he been spoken to in such a manner he would have lost his temper ) . It seems to both myself and my husband that the owner of the hotel has indeed very little knowledge of what the staff have to put up with . he also seems to be out of touch with how the hotel was run . The staff seem to have more idea on what is going on . We felt for this night porter who we had also seen working hard in the bar the night before while what seemed to us both that the barman just sat and talked . My husband did make a comment on wether or not he was indeed just helping himself to beer for both himself and what may have been his friend . We both felt that the food was very good indeed yet may have room for improvment . We will advise all are friends that this hotel is not a hotel that is to be visited and will make a point of having something to say to the the tourist board.
