Strictly speaking this hotel is in the village of Battle, near Hastings, not in Hastings itself.
The hotel is a couple of minutes outside the village, behind the Abbey.
It is in a stunning setting.
The rooms are lovely and well furnished and decorated, the staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, and the food is fantastic.
The breakfast menu is extensive - from Full English to kippers or kedgeree, and toast made with homemade bread.
Have stayed there three times now, over approx seven years (most recently in Oct 2006), and it's as good as ever.
Warning for anybody who's scared of dogs, though - they have luggage guarding spaniels wandering the ground floor!

My husband booked up the hotel as a birthday treat and on our arrival we were pointed to the stairway to arrive at a very disappointing room at the back of the hotel. When we undertook a tour of the gardens, which we had read were beautiful, we were met with more disappointment. On venturing up to the tennis court, greenhouse area, this was dilapidated and dangerous, with broken glass littering the steps.
We eventually found the lake and sat on a beautiful sunny afternoon to enjoy a glass of wine and strawberries. It was not very long before we discovered that the gazebo jutting out in to the lake had recently been painted and our clothes were covered in paint. Despite reporting this to the staff, though helpful, they were unable to find us something to remove the paint from our hands. They merely mentioned that it had been recently painted and it melt in the sun. Only happy that the bride there that day did not sit on the gazebo for pictures!
Breakfast was served in a very hurried fashion with the second course delivered whilst my husband was eating his first course. On returning home my husband wrote to the hotel and expressed our dissatisfaction. We were reimbursed for the damage to our clothes but our letter to the manager remains unanswered. This is a pity as it reflects on the rest of the staff as a whole. I can only assume that this hotel is relying on its reputation of years ago when it hosted a photo shoot for Laura Ashley. Perhaps if the manager reads this entry he may feel able to reply to my letter.
