The Macael was a total let-down, from the very rude receptionist to the self catering facilites, and the Thomas Cook reps were the same.
On arriving to the Macael at 14.00 we were told our appartment wasn't ready by the receptionist, and we could wait in the foyer or sit at the the bar, but she couldn't give us a time when the room would be ready. she said (very rudely) she didn't have to let us in the room until 17.00 anyway. Seen as you pay more for early fights, Thomas Cook should let you know this before you book.
When we evenually got to our appartment (101) it looked quite spaceous but noticed straight away the lack of facilites in the kitchen. No oven, No toaster, No microwave, just 2 gas rings and a fridge-freezer. Every time you light the gas ring (with the MATCHES they provide) after you burnt your fingers, the gas goes back out. All you could manage to cook would be soup or boil the kettle (on the hob) burn your hand on the hot handle and have a pot noddle.
On walking outside to a small but nice terrace we noticed a light hanging off the wall by just it's wires and also a small box behind the front entrance door also was hanging off by just it's wires.
The next day our daughter was eating her cereal and then we noticed the RED ANTS, all over the worktops and the wall behind the gas rings, they were everywhere. This put all of us of eating in the appartment and so we had to eat out every meal which gets very expensive.
We did try to complain to the Thomas Cook rep about the lack of facilities but she just advised " my mum stayed here and she said it was sparce but I know where you can hire a toaster" not very helpfull.
Our welcome meeting was also fairly odd it was not at the appartments, we were advised to go to a bar on the front where they ran through the usual sales pitch. We were offered a childrens party run by the reps where they would receive free drinks and crisps this was at a cost of 10€ per child, this was terrible the children only got 2 drinks no crisps and they put on a CD of the same old party songs and played pass the parcel to which my 10 year old was not amused even my 7 year old who is usualy easily pleased got bored and then all the kids just started making their own entertainment a complete waste of 20€.
The only saving grace for this appartment complex is the pool which is great it was large and had a seperate baby pool the sides allow you to laze around topping up your tan whilst still been in the water. there are plenty of sunbeds but these need to be hired at 1.50€ per day.
There is no kids club at the appartments and they do not provide any entertainment what so ever, the resort its self doesn't have a night life or any entertinment unless you are at a hotel but even then this is geared for the spanish holiday makers and all in spanish. There are some english bars but their entertainment is mainly quizes, bingo and karaoke.
Eating out there are plenty of places but the spanish run ones are very expensive but the food is ok. We went to "The Roses" pub mainly the 2 couples runing it were friendly enough and the food was cheap and homemade the only down side was the portions were a little on the small side, but all in all they were nice meals and the carribeian bar next door had a singer on and karaoke every evening so we could listen to this whilst having a meal and a drink.
The resort its self is a spanish holiday resort and the spanish made us well aware of this, they were very ignorant and would practicly walk in to you in the street expecting you to move for them. The people in the spanish restaurants were not too bad but the people in the shops were rude and realy didn't even want to serve us even though we tried very hard to speak in their language. Overall i did not feel a welcome visitor in this resort.
The best day on this holiday was when we went on a trip bought through the reps (192€ for 2 adults & 2 kids) to Mini Hollywood this is in a desert and was the original set of the spagetti westerns there was cancan girls in the saloon and a real wild west shoot out, it also included a BBQ wich was all you can eat and drink. This realy was all you can eat and drink and the food was great they finished of the evening with desert and champagne. The cowboys also come to the BBQ and sit and eat with the guests they were realy freindly and were happy to have their pictures taken with you the kids realy loved this (well worth a visit).

Just returned from macael apartments after a 2 week holiday..
We had 6 adults and a baby of 18 months.
These 4 berth apartments are lovely and clean but thats as far as it goes
The beds in the lounge are not suitable for adults, slats missing on both beds, also the
cot hire is a travel cot and is expensive.
The kitchen is equipped with a 4 ring hob and a fridge freezer and a kettle that
boils on the hob. The showers in the bathroom are great, really powerfull.
To get a breeze into the apartment the patio door needs to be open onto the terrace,
rather difficult when you have a toddler bcus of the drop into the car park and the
broken rough tiles on the terrace on one of the apartments we had.
The pool is lovely and clean, plenty of loungers for hire.
The resort itself is lovely and clean but not an awfull lot there, we were led to believe
that there was sumthing for all of us, there are a few shops, lots of restaurants and bars, the beach and thats about it unless you hire a car which we were told we wudnt need so didnt budget for.
The spanish do not want the british there, that came across loud and clear, we all
tryed to pick up the language and we all would of liked to have seen somethin spanish
but the only people who are friendly are the restaurant owners.
The beach altho it was shingly was very clean and we spent most days in the sea, altho
when its windy theres lots of weed and jelly fish, lots of pedal boats etc to hire.
The thomas cook rep was rendered useless, unless you track her down, you wont even
see her, we were led to believe that she keeps you informed of things going on around
the resort and excursions, only to find out that its all put on a board at the main reception but nobody tells u that.
All in all, we ended up having a good holiday, the weather was great, but i wouldnt book
another holiday thru thomas cook.

It's fair to say that wherever you chose to go on holiday, which country, resort, board basis and tour operator you use, there will always be good and bad points to make on reflection. When reflecting on our recent 2 weeks at the Macael apartments and resort of Roquetas, unfortunately I have to say that there are more bad than good points.
Firstly the complex itself. The apartments are perhaps the most spacious ones we've ever stayed in. They are simply but tastefully decorated, tidy and cleaned twice per week. Towels and beds are also changed twice weekly. There was a good sized living room area, balcony, dining area, open plan kitchen, good sized twin bedroom with ample storage and a very clean bathroom with well maintained appliances. The bad points are mainly the fact that as this is supposed to be a self-catering facility, the average family of 4 would struggle in this respect. we only had a 4-ring hob but no oven, toaster or microwave. we were the lucky ones though as many of the other guests we spoke to only had 2 hobs. Clearly these facilities are inadiquate, making it very difficult to self-cater, as it were, forcing most people to eat out more often than they might have budgeted for.
The pool and surrounding areas are without doubt the nicest weve seen on any of our previous holidays. The pool layout is excellent, well maintained and very child-friendly. The gardens are also very pleasing on the eye, making this an excellent environment to relax in. There are however a few bad points to all this. Firstly, each person pays 1.50 euros per sun lounger per day. this was a sore point for me personally, as it was unexpected and eats into your holiday spends if your there every day. The key here is to make sure you're all in the pool when the attendant comes to collect your money. We only got away with this once as he is very sneaky and seems to appear at any time and from any direction. Also the patio area outside the bar is in dire need of a revamp as is the eyesore of an old stage/activity area to the corner of the pool area. The bar is ok and the staff friendly and helpful. The reception lady we found to be helpful and friendly although we heard different opinions from other guests. I can't really comment on the reps as we did not use their services or seek their advice on any issues.
Other bad points are the fact that, unlike any other places we've visited, the pool is not open until 11am, the bar is closed very early, around 10pm, reception is closed on wednesdays, although there is a phone number for emergencies or lost keys. (at a cost of 20 euros)
The pool and bar is shared between Macael and Moguima apartments, which are mostly filled with spanish people and a sprinkling of brits, germans and french although this is not an issue.
The resort itself is very low key with plenty of bars and restaurants but virtually no nightlife at all. Basically, if your after a busy resort with a range of entertainment at night then my advice to you is to steer well clear of Roquetas. This is where spanish people come for their holidays, short breaks or days out by the sea. The place is a virtual ghost town by day but at around 9 or 10 at night they come out in their thousands with their children, eat and drink and wander around. Roquetas has a very spanish feel to it and does not cater for those who seek some night time entertainment, apart from one or two bars which try, quite poorly to buck the trend, with large screen tv's, british soaps and football and poorly attended karaoki.
It would be harsh to generalise and say that all the locals were unfriendly and unwelcoming, so i will tactfully say that I had issues with a large minority of them. I found lots of them, particularly in the supermarket and on the crouded pavements at night, to be quite ignorant, making you step off the pavement whilst we allow them to pass and brushing past you without a word of thanks or apology. We and many other guests we spoke to felt quite unwelcome overall. It's safe to say that our foreign language skills are not quite up to the standards of some of our european counterparts, but at the end of the day politeness is the same in any language.
It's not all doom and gloom though. The restaurants are many and varied, from the usual british fry up and everything with chips, (yawn!) to the more continental choices in some of the restaurants and tapas bars tucked away, if you feeling more adventurous. Beware though, the resort is infested with flies. Maybe it's the heat, i don't know, but be prepared to share your evening meal with them.
The beach is uncrouded and very pleasant. It is a sand/shingle type beach which I found to be quite a plus as it can easily be shaken from the toes when dry and does'nt annoy you all day like the traditional sand does. The resort is generally quite clean and high-rise hotels are at a minimum, although there does seem to be a local problem with graffiti in some parts.
Overall, if you want a quiet, relaxing week or two, nice quiet beach, local food and culture away from the traditional, stereotypical british package holiday to Spain, then this is the place for you. If, like us you want a combination of quiet, local culture but with the option of something to look forward to in the evenings, other than just dining with the flies every night, then I would avoid Roquetas.
