This was the worst holiday I have ever been on. I found Sunny Beach a dirty, cheap and tacky resort with not much to do at all. We went in September which is near the end of the season and we got the impression that the Bulgarian people couldn't be bothered with the tourists any more. They were rude and just stared at you, and so did the Germans who seemed to have taken over the hotel. You couldn't walk down the main strip at the back of the hotel without someone pouncing on you from a bar/restaurant trying to get you to go in. None of the Bulgarians seemed to understand the concept of 'just looking', and I even had an item snatched out of my hand in a shop because I was just looking and not buying. The beach was filthy and full of litter, cigarette ends, broken glass and sanitary products. I was bitten twice after going in the sea so decided to spend the rest of the holiday poolside at the hotel. The hotel was in general OK, but it was bed and breakfast and when we booked the holiday through our travel agent they told us it was self catering. The breakfast was mainly geared towards the Germans, with lots of sausage meat and cheese. Having an eating disorder, the only thing I could eat was eggs. We went out for meals in the evening (which were generally unpleasant) but lunches were a nightmare wth no cooking facilities in the room. I ended up eating tins of sweetcorn with cutlery obtained from the local Macdonalds, and triangles of laughing cow cheese. The hotel room was very basic but clean which we were grateful for. The maids always came in to clean whenever we requested, but they didn't change the sheets once in the week we were there. We didn't have tea and coffee making facilities in the room which was really annoying. There were horses on the beach which you could pay to have rides on but the horses looked miserable and they had no water for drinking. On watching one of the horse rides, the man started whipping the horse with a cane as it didn't want to walk. I saw another man put the horses reign over the saddle so it couldn't move its head up and down. This was very sad for us to watch and it was then we vowed never to return to the country again.

Just arrived back from bulgaria - chose a last minute deal allocated on arrival - as first time in bulgaria didnt know what to expect - will def be visiting again- hotel was very clean and friendly - staff didnt speak much english but did their best to understand- maids clean room every day - change towels every other - breakfast basic but found enough to fill you till lunch- resort is fab - really cheap - food excellant - plenty to do- beware pick pockets tho - they have scam where after they've stolen camera/wallet one of their gang will give you stolen item back expecting money as reward - dont fall for it their all in on it as i found out after my camera was stolen. Didnt spoil holiday tho just made us xtra cautious - cant wait to return.

We Went to Bulgaria for the first time in September 08 and stayed at the Avliga beach hotel in Sunny Beach. On first viewing the hotel at 5.50 am it looked like a nice smaller sized hotel we collected our keys and went strait to our rooms. Our Thomas Cook holiday rep left us a welcome leaflet asking us to meet her at 11 am in the hotel lobby, after only two hours sleep I got up to meet her only to fined she hadn’t turned up we never saw her the entire week we were there. The hotel itself is flanked by two larger very modern hotels and is starting to look very dated and in need of complete renovation. The breakfasts were absolutely hideous and not setup for the British pallet at all, it soon become apparent that we were in a hotel full of German pensioners and they were the people being catered for. Sunny beach itself has a long sandy beach which shelves gradually into the see, there are plenty of places to eat but be advised the food never seams to be piping hot and is very bland, I myself had food poisoning and had to spend three days in my hotel room. The rest of the resort is full of small shops selling copies of well known brands, perfumes and watches .Don’t be tempted to buy any of it its a total waste of money. Be careful where you change your money they will rip you off and if you get into dispute with a Bulgarian don’t expect any help from the police.
Pick pocketing is rife, and the miff that Bulgaria is cheap is not true we spent just as much money there as we would have in Spain. There seems to be a total lack of entertainment in any of the hotels and if it rains there is very little to do.
The roads are very poor, and Borgas airport is a joke we did not enjoy anything about the Avliga beach hotel or Bulgaria.
