We went to Le Palmiste for a friend's wedding and stayed there for 2 weeks. At that time the hotel was fairly new but the staff were very accomodating and spendidly friendly and nothing was too much for them. The location is just off the main which is a bonus and a few minutes's walk to the gorgeous Trou aux biches public beach where one can snorkel for hours, the sea is quite calm which is a treat for younger children and you are still a short ride to many other attractiions of the island

I gather the hotel has increased in size but only to a small extent. At least it is not over developed and high rise!!

All in all this is a fabulous hotel and reasonably priced.

Get your arse there!!!

Trou Aux Biches is a beautiful resort situated in North Mauritius. Although we went over in their winter season which is very changeable the north seems to have better weather than the south. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous; I would say probably the best in Mauritius!

The Mauritians are amazing people. They are very welcoming and they know how to make you feel at home. We didn't come across any beggars, which makes a change. Le Palmiste Hotel is lovely. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

We were originally given a room on the third floor which was very damp and not welcoming, so we asked to be moved into another room which they did and which was much better. Rooms are very spacious and characteristic but have a slight damp odour which disappears once you put on the air conditioning.

Breakfast is great, offering from eggs and bacon to cereal, fresh fruit, and crepes. The restaurant offers a nice selection of dishes if you wish to have lunch there which are very reasonably priced. A buffet is served for dinner with a good choice of dishes.

Bring a hairdryer as not all the rooms have one. Make sure you have enough money when it comes to settling your room bill when checking out as the hotel doesn't accept credit cards.

Places and things worth visiting and doing: Panoramic view from Trou aux Cerfs, the dormant volcanic crater; Chamarel's seven coloured earths: Sacred Lake of Grand Bassin / Ganga Talao (site of Lord Shiva's temple); National park of the Black River Gorges; Guided visit of Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens;

Shopping in Grand Baie; Ile de Deux Cocos (Two Coconut Island) where you can go on the glass bottom boat and snorkel. Only 70 people allowed on the island at any one time.

Here there is a villa which can be rented together with the whole island for 24 hours for 2500 Euros! Very tempting! Trou Aux Biches offers lots of water sports such as inflatable rings, paragliding and snorkelling. Snorkelling and a trip on a glass bottom boat is a must as the coral reef is spectacular!

If you fancy a treat go to Le Capitaine which is a fish restaurant situated in Grand Baie. It's a bit expensive but the fish is exquisite and worth it!

Mauritius is absolute paradise and worth visiting over and over again! Can't wait to go back and we've only be back a day!

13 of us stayed here October 2006. We went to Mauritius for a family wedding. The wedding was actually held at the Maritim a few miles away, but the reception was on Trou Aux Biches beach.

Some of our relatives stayed at the Sakoa which is about 5 minutes walk away.

The Palmiste was much friendlier than the Sakoa.

The breakfast was excellent, with a wide choice from English eggs & Bacon, cereals, fruit, pancakes & yogurts. The staff were wonderful.

Our rooms were spotless, big & very comfortable, with TV, hairdryer, fridge & kettle.

There were two swimming pools with a small section for children.

The hotel was building a spa & beauty salon which was very near completion when we were there.

The location of the hotel is within easy access to the wonderful beach about 5minutes walk the bus stop is also about 5 minutes. There are a few restaurants within walking distance if you don't want to eat in the hotel.

There is also a general store & chemist close to the hotel. The nearest big shopping area is in Grande Baie, which is easy to reach by bus or taxi which were 250 Mauritian rupees into Grande Baie, there were 67MR aprox to £1 in Oct 2006.

Mauritius is a lovely friendly place it's a shame it's such a long flight!
