It was a pleasure to deal with such helpful booking staff. Unlike some special rate booking you could cancel upto 2pm the day prior to arrival. Completely refurbished; lovely location by river and green fields yet minutes to shopping centre. Location good for driving... more

Not a Spider in sight
from m33m
We were working in Burton and ate dinner at the Riverside, I was a little put back by the spider review but I found the restaurant and hotel (we went to see the rooms for future visits) to have excellent food and was very clean and wait staff friendly. I specifically went around and looked for spiders and didn't see a single one. The rooms were a little small for my taste but I would recommend this hotel to anyone who needed to stay in Burton.
One word...."SPIDERS" !!!!!
from RACHandJO
This place is like walking into the film Arachnophobia and that is NO exaggeration! After being freaked out in the hotel bar by the amount of spiders hanging from the top of the windows outside, I decided to go to my room. I was presented with 8 spiders hanging from the INSIDE of my window and LOADS of webs. I packed my bags and went down to Reception where I was told there were no more rooms. In their defence though, they did offer to send me to a different hotel but it was at the other side of Burton and it was late. So I had to share a room with my workmate! The next day, the manager came and apologised and said that me and the other 3 guests who I was staying with could have dinner for free that night. By the way though, lots of guests had noticed the spiders...it wasn't just my room. On the plus side, the staff were fab and the food was amazing. Lots of variety and high quality. If you don't mind spiders and cobwebs, you will love this Hotel!
Mixed feelings....
from intruder3906
We just returned from 2 nights in this hotel after attending a fantastic wedding. When we booked we (unknowingly) asked for a room for three people, two adults and 15 year old daughter, after checking in we discovered we were allocated a tiny room with one small double bed.....when we returned to reception to explain the mistake, they politely said they would sort it immediately, that they did ..by putting in a fold-away camp bed, which they wedged between the double bed and the window, and i mean wedged.!! absolutely no space left at all....especially for 3 people. Very claustrophobic, and very stuffy and hot. The bathroom was so small it was obviously an afterthought, the toilet seat touched the bath at one side and the wall at the other side...so if your a larger than average person you would struggle. Then to cap it all, no hot water at all on the day of the wedding. To be fair to the hotel they did provide another room with hot water for all the guests to use later the same evening. Not all bad though.....the wedding function room was fantastic, the staff were first class and food excellent, the setting and views from the rear of the building we beautiful and excellent for that special occasion. If the management demolish the annex where all the guest rooms are and rebuild bigger and more modern rooms this hotel would be 5 star. Feel free to email and ask any questions....
Food excellent, good ambience

Food wonderful, resturant good, however room on the small side and very hot and pipes were noisy. Nice place although you enter through a housing estate it backs onto the river trent with beautiful views.
good value

we stayed at the riverside for one night as we had booked in for a meal and it meant we could have a drink and not drive back.we had read the reviews and thought well it's only for one night.we paid £50 for the room and breakfast.we had a double room and although it wasn't the largest double room we had stayed in it was clean and well decorated and had a flat screen tv in the room. The bathroom was a bit basic but everything worked and it was clean. The meal in the evening was good with plenty of food but there was a wedding reception being held there and guests were queueing at the bar where you had to order your food at the food order point. The breakfast which was included with the room price was excellent with plenty of food. There were cereals, continental,a big english breakfast, pastries all with excellent service. So overall you might get a basic room but it was a busy place,a good menu and an excellent breakfast and if it is warm enough you can sit outside on the lawns overlooking the trent.
In desperate need of a refurb!
from marcuschap72
We've had A Christmas Party night at The Riverside for the past 3 years and previously, the only thing that let down the side a bit was the rooms. When you call the phone message bosts of the 'newly refurbished' Riverside so we thought they might have updated the rooms - wrong! I couldn't see any signs of a refurb...maybe they'd had a new carpet in the bar, or had it cleaned? The outside, facing the river, is fenced off and looks like they've maybe started some work but the only thing it does at the moment is obstruct the river view. The rooms are well past their best these days, the cover on our bed was torn, the net at the window grubby and the bathroom has not been touched since the 1970s! The rooms are reasonably clean but the cleaners obviously don't look up very often judging by the amount of cobwebs in the room and on the staircase. As i said in the past, the rooms WERE the only thing that let the side down but i think this will be our last visit. The hotel is under new management and they now seem very tight on portion control. I'm not a big eater but i had the mushrooms to start and it looked quite pathetic - 6 small mushrooms in a Dolmio type sauce, the main course wasn't bad but again when it came to the xmas pudding, a small slither was served with brandy sauce. Breakfast was on a par really, one egg, one slice of bacon, one sausage, quite poor looking in comparison to previous years or in comparison to any decent hotel. The Riverside has had it's day i'm afraid.
small room, bad bed but excellent service
from alisssmith
The hotel's public spaces - bar, restaurant, lounge were OK, but the room was a little small. We got a fairly good deal and I have stayed in worse places for £40 per night B&B. The bed was a disappointment, smaller than a conventional double bed definitely and 'crunchy' when you sat down on it... The lady who served breakfast, Eva was a breath of fresh air and obviously took pride in her work. The hotel served it's purpose for us and we found that things which needed improving and which they could do something about - hot water, replacing tea and coffee supplies etc. they did quickly. The bed and size of the room were the downsides.
Dont Go!!!

i am writing to express my disappointment with this hotel during my recent stay. We were booked to stay for 2 nights but to be honest we checked out early as we couldn't face another night in a small, claustrophobic room, and wasn't much of point asking to change rooms as we found the whole hotel to be noisy with pipes, toilets flushing and even hearing the people in the room next door using their toilet. The bed has got to be the most uncomfortable i have ever stayed in too....i think i would have been better off sleeping on bricks!! I found the staff on our arrival to be courteous and polite, but the following day, whilst waiting to get my room key from reception after a morning out, i was ignored by 2 members of staff, and eventually had to make it known i was there, this is what made up my mind it was time to go. On returning to the reception desk to inform of our departure i got no eye contact from the receptionist, i found her to be most uncourteous and to be honest rude. I expected to have to pay for the booked stay but she did not need to be so matter of fact about it. I was just grateful that i was not paying full price, as i feel what i did pay was far too much. How they can justify charging £90 a night for this i do not understand?? I have stayed at budget hotels that are cheaper, much nicer and able to provide a very good and friendly service. From conversations heard at breakfast a know i am not alone in my opinion of your hotel and service. From what i saw the only good thing about 'The Riverside' was the very polite, friendly spanish lady serving at breakfast time, but even she was not enough to convince me to stay another night!! If you want to stay somewhere with friendly service and value for money, this IS NOT IT!!!!!
Not good value for money
from Showtime_Synergy
I recently stayed at the Riverside Hotel for a wedding. I have to say that even with the wedding guest discount, £70 per night is far too expensive for what you get at this hotel. The downstairs isn't too bad, although the decor is nothing special. The grounds are pretty and back onto the River Trent, but aren't very big. The real problem were the bedrooms. Tiny & shockingly decorated! I couldn't believe how small they were. There was a small double bed, with just enough room to walk around it. My boyfriend and I had to squeeze past each other, to get around the room. The hotel had tried to put in amenities in the room, i.e. there was a desk, some chairs iron & ironing board, but there just wasn't enough room to actually make use of any of it. The decor was very dated and very unpleasant. Loud patterned chairs, clashed with a loud and differently pattern bedspread and a bright yellow wall topped it off. The bath room again was tiny! The door opened straight into the sink and you had to squeeze into the room in order to shut it. They had managed to cramp in a bath with a shower over it and a toliet, but literally no room to manouevre in there. The room didn't feel clean either. There were cobwebs everyshere and the bedspread was sticky! The bathroom although looked like it could have done with some bleach. The wedding itself was lovely, however, the bar did close at 11.00pm and any further service was refused to the wedding guests and hotel residents. No complaints about the staff. Basically this hotel will do as somewhere to rest your head for a night, but in which case is over-priced. If you are using this hotel for a break/holiday or base to explore the local area, then I think you will be disappointed.
This hotel is ok, at best.
from CharlieFox
First the good. The staff were lovely, especially the spanish lady who served us at breakfast. Now the bad, although saying bad might be just a touch too harsh. It was all just a bit average really. The outside looks a bit grotty and the setting isn't that great, despite being right on the river. Our room was small and boiling hot. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable and the decor was a bit dated. It's more like a £20 a night B&B rather than a £60 a night hotel and I know £60 isn't a huge amount of money to pay but it's enough. The only meal we had there was breakfast, which was ok. So although it wasn't terrible, I wouldn't go back, as I think there's got to be better places to stay in the local area.

My partner and I visited the hotel for the weekend over the Valentines weekend, enjoying the special package created for that event. Since we were travelling down from a few hours away, we missed the dinner for Friday night, and the staff helpfully removed this amount from... more
