The Milton Plaza was a fantastic hotel right in the heart of New York City and perfect for my first trip there.
It was 5 minutes walk from Times Square, also situated in the theatre district and around every corner (or so it seemed!) there was a different show advertised at a different theatre.
Unfortunately I ran out of time and didn't get chance to see a show, but it’s definitely on the cards for my next visit!
As regards the hotel: staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel was clean and the room satisfactory for such a large hotel.
There was an adjoining bar and small shop selling all those things that you forget to pack!!
Loved the friendly guy outside the hotel who's job seemed to be whistling for cabs all day come rain or shine...good work!
In terms of price the hotel was decent and not as expensive as I had imagined it may be. It was booked on line directly with the hotel who sent me all the relevant confirmation details.
Getting around New York was a doddle, and although I felt that I had walked a million miles by the end of the week there were easier ways of doing it!
The subway was reliable, cheap, easy and quick and also the best place to go to see New York's more colourful characters!
SIGHTSEEING:
The Staten Island Ferry is a must as you get great views of the NYC skyline and of Lady Liberty herself, bonus = it’s free! Most tourists tended to get off on Staten Island and get the ferry straight back as there isn't an awful lot to do on the island itself.
Also, I would highly recommend a helicopter flight over the Big Apple itself; it’s an amazing experience to take home with you and one that I certainly won't forget. Book the tickets before you fly out...go with liberty helicopters which can be booked online with attraction tickets direct.
The Empire State building is a must, here's a tip....time it so you go up just before the
Sun sets = views during daylight + the amazing view at night when the whole city just lights up.
You may have to queue for a while to get up there in the lift so it’s worth going the day before to check out the queue length at the time you are planning on going....timing timing timing!!
Central park is a beautiful place to go to chill out for the day and take a break from the hustle and bustle of city sightseeing. The John Lennon memorial is located at the Western side of the park (I think) the Met and the Guggenheim are located at the Eastern side.
There are also horse and carriages tours taking you around the park if your legs really can't stand anymore walking! There are also some really good street artists with selling stunning pictures of the city scattered around the edge of the park.
Finally, although the site of the Twin Towers echoes tragedy thousands flock to see it along with the visitor’s centre, which I guarantee will leave a lump in your throat and a tear in your eyes.
It is something I felt I had to see to believe. The visitors centre was very hard hitting but is a place everyone should experience to fully understand the extent of the terrorist situation.
Not to leave it on a sour note...New York is an amazing place and one in which you will see the most bizarre mix of people and some of the world’s most famous landmarks.
