Holiday Inn Wakefield M1 Reviews
Apr 2007, Ms K Smith
I used this hotel as a stay for when I went out with a group of friends for a celebration. The hotel was open all evening so we didn’t have to be back for any particular time, which was one of the reasons why we opted for this hotel. It isn’t in the centre of Wakefield... more

Have stayed here previously on business and stayed here again, only because my travel agent didn't book my regular hotel in time and all my prefered alternatives were full. I was a bit anxious after my previous experience and again I was not disappointed. The room was still like a Travelodge, uncomfortable, stark and no space in the 'work area'. The hot water tap in the bath spewed out rust and was very brown, so no bath after 14 hour days. I just could ot relax and was happy to get into work evrey day I stayed there, This hotel and Washington give this brand in Britain a bad name and definetly not worth the money. If you want an over night stopover here, find somewhere else.
Very pleasant surprise
from gobo121
Very pleased with the value and convenience of this Holiday Inn. It is within sight of the M1, so easy to find after a long day's drive, but there is no motorway noise once you're at the hotel. The staff were nice to deal with - the hotel room was modern, clean, in a good state of repair. There is wired internet available in the rooms for £15/24hours or wireless available in the lounge for £6/hour. There is a restaurant on the premises, a couple of petrol stations just down the road (useful for someone stopping over during a long journey). A conference was being accommodated at the same time as us - there were free newspapers in the lobby, along with self-service Starbucks coffee. I assume these may have been there just for the conference, and so wouldn't assume that free papers/coffee would be there every time - but we were pleased to find that both were unsupervised! I would very happily stay here again. It isn't a 'destination' hotel but it's a top-notch place to sleep during a journey.
Poor Service & Expensive
from weeyin-7
Poor check in to start of with, rude receptionist who insisted she was the "manager"?? half way through checking in I was past on to someone else as her shift had finished and she had had enough!? very professional! (not) small rooms, dirty bathrooms, poor service in restaurant evening and breakfast, food had no thought into it or presentation and was barley hot. messy bar ad annoying seats in "lounge area" thats if you can call it that! dont stay here, honestly. if you have a bit of class you dont want to be staying at this hotel/b&b
Very good value for money

Stayed one night at the Holiday Inn. Was expecting an average stay with average meal but was very pleasantly surprised. Place was clean (apart from shower tiles could do with a bleaching). Staff were helpful and friendly. The surprise was the meal - very tasty and well-presented. If I was local it would be on my list of places to eat. It was excellent value for money at £59.00 for 3 in a room with 3 decent breakfasts.
my wedding day
from mrslouise_w
We are writing to tell you about our recent experience of one of your hotels: General Manager: Mr Nigel Dibb Holiday Inn Wakefield MI, JCT.40 Wakefield, Queens Drive WF5 9BE We are writing to thank you for making our wedding such a special occasion. All our guests are still talking about what a wonderful day it was. Our wedding ceremony, reception and evening party was all held in the hotel on Saturday 12th august 2006. We would like to thank Carrie-Ann Davidson who was in charge of organising our wedding, from booking the hotel over 2 years ago right up until the wedding day. We thought the reception room was set out beautifully due to the lovely personalised menus, seating plan and place cards done by Carrie Ann, and the coloured table linen, balloons and flower arrangements all organised by her. Absolutely everything was perfect thanks to her hard work and planning of the whole day to the timing and the very last details. Thank you so much to ALL the staff who worked that day, we thought the staff were very welcoming to all our guests and they were also very efficient throughout the whole day. We were very pleased with the standard of catering: we thought the reception meal was marvellous and served with utmost efficiency, there were also many comments about the high standard of the buffet in the evening …they did a wonderful job. A very big thanks to Sam Petit who was in charge of the smooth running on the day and looking after us. We first met him the night before the wedding, when he introduced himself to us and helped us take our things up to our room as myself and my sister in law to be stayed over the night before as well. He met us in the bar that night and went through everything with myself to check that all the details he had were right, said he would be there for us and to just ask him for anything we wanted and was patient and reassuring as I was a nervous wreck. He later took us to see the wedding cake as I hadn’t seen it yet. The morning of the wedding he was there in early first thing starting on the wedding preparations. He was there from start to finish, made sure the guests knew where to go and that they were all in the room ready waiting for me so no one saw me in my dress beforehand. Made sure the music all went on time, had drinks waiting for our guests after the ceremony and showed all the guests outside for the photographs. While we were outside having photos taken Sam was overlooking and checking the room change over from ceremony to reception before we came back in. After the photographs all the guests were seated and Sam announced us in to the room. He made sure everyone was being served each course quickly and efficiently and made sure no one was without a drink. Announced the cake cutting and the speeches. All throughout the reception he never stopped, constantly looking after everyone, making sure everything was running smoothly, asking us if everything was ok and making sure it all ran on time. Straight after the reception Sam was still in there making sure the room was changed over and set up right for the evening party and checking the buffet was right. Sam was still there right up until midnight, checking the buffet needed filling up, making sure everything was right and we were ok. The next morning after the wedding Sam came back in on his day off to say good-bye and see us off, which we thought was lovely. Sam played a very important part in our wedding day and deserves extra thanks, as we can’t thank him enough for the amazing job he did, we really appreciate his professionalism, friendliness and hard work. We would like to say a big thank you to the DJ Steve for making it such an enjoyable night. Everyone commented later on how great he was, he new what songs people wanted to hear and got involved and made it fun for everyone. It wouldn’t have been the same without him. We look forward to using his services again. Your staff did a wonderful job of supplying our needs. They worked efficiently doing all that needed to be done to make this joyful occasion enjoyable for all. We could not have dreamed of better service and care. Once again thank you for a day we will certainly not forget and we will be sure to recommend your hotel to any of our friends and colleagues. Louise & Paul

Overall a brilliant stay at the Holiday inn wakefield. The stay were friendly and polite. We went for a meal at new years eve and ate in one of the suites, dj was excellent and got crowd involved, as well as giving away bottles of alcohol so its all good.It was strange however to see many of the same staff working on new years eve morning aswell as new years eve, they must have been shattered, didnt show though. I would recomend this hotel to anyone who wanted a good meal, nice atmosphere and good nights sleep. Kelly H.x
One of the better holiday inns

When you pay £60 - £80 for a hotel room, you can't expect too much, but the Wakey Holiday Inn punches above its price point if you're looking for confortable convenience. Plus points *Ideal stopover location, being just off the M1 Jn 40 *Clean, comfortable & modern rooms. *Relatively modern and pleasing bar and restaurant area *Food and drink quality above average for this style and quality of hotel. *Friendly staff from my experience *Always easy to find parking Not many negative points, maybe the restaurant food could be cheaper (although snack bar menu more reasonably priced) & the bar could be a little bigger. Highly recommended though if you want half-decent food, comfort and convenience for 1 night for under £100.
good hotel but let down by the service...

I stayed at the Holiday Inn, Wakefield for 2 nights in September while at a family wedding. Car Park - There are lots of car parking spaces, and should be plenty even if the hotel is full, just be aware that sometimes there are coaches parked at the rear of the car park, and these could block you in as the drivers seem to park up and then go off to find their passengers, or do what they have to do. Reception - Staff on check-in were friendly, we asked for a non-smoking room and were given a smoking room, but they changed it for us without any problems. We weren't asked if we wanted two key cards and had to request this. Room - We were in an executive room, I am not sure what this means really, above what would be a standard room, maybe it was the Kit Kat biscuit we got with the coffee making facilities? All in all the rooms were very tidy and a good size. They were clean and there were no strange smells around. We were on the ground floor, and didn't have a view or anything but we didn't have anyone overlooking our room. One downside with the rooms was the fact that they did not have decent lighting, no ceiling lights, or even bright wall lights, and when you are doing your hair in half-light conditions, expect the worst! The bathroom was clean and the shower for massively powerful, so much so that we only turned it on to halfway to stop it dragging the shower curtain into the tub when you were trying to take a shower! We did hear people slamming doors during the night, laughing and generally being noisier than they should have been but because there aren't that many hotels in Wakefield the Holiday Inn seems to attract people in parties, old and young! - And this can mean one or two celebrations when people get back to their rooms! Restaurant - We did eat in the restaurant on the first night and the food was lovely and they served generous sized portions, but the service wasn't the best in the world. I think that were two attendants for the whole place and they were also dealing with requests at the bar! Breakfast - I really wish that I had given this a miss! We weren't even welcomed into the breakfast area, we were asked our room number, told to take a seat and that was it - no-one offered coffee, no-one told us where everything was or what was available... we just got on with it without their help, and had to nab the server for some coffee when we caught her eye! They were offering fruit, cereal, juices, and hot food. All I can recommend is to steer clear of the hot food if you eat after 9am! I am not a picky eater, but dried out beans, totally unappetising sausages and black pudding that had stood all night by looking at it! Not for the faint at heart! Checkout - This was a doddle, and we found that there is a side door to the car park, which meant that we didn't have to drag luggage all the way out the main reception area to the car! There were no unexpected surprises on the bill everything was in perfect order. Overall - We paid £70.00 per night for a Friday and Saturday night and I would say that it was worth the money, but we were given a discount due to the wedding party. The rooms are generally more expensive than this, but it doesn't hurt to ask..! I would stay here again, but I think this is because Wakefield doesn't have that many hotels to offer and I know that this will be the best within the area.
Excellent Hotel

We stayed at this hotel while travelling, it was extremely good value for money with friendly staff and great service. The location was perfect for us, been just off the M1, and the rooms were nicely decorated and very comfortable. We will certainly stay here again.
Hotel Fine, Restaurant Mediocre

This is a former Posthouse. Most of the rooms (2 out of 3 of my party) were in nicely refurbished rooms with pleasant IKEA style decor and decent showers. The other room was of the rather tired traditional decor - but I would guess was on its way out. I rang the hotel to find out the restaurant opening hours and the woman I spoke to didn't know which was surprising. I tried again and had more success with someone else. Check-In was friendly but they close reception as soon as the last guest has checked in and my alarm call was never received - which was a bit of a pain. The restaurant is what you would expect. Like a very average chain restaurant. Why oh why don't Holiday Inn go for simple but well done menus rather than trying to run more sophisticated restaurants that there restaurants can't sustain. Service was erratic but friendly. They had closed the kitchen without asking us if we wanted dessert, similarly the bar without asking if we wanted more drinks. Overall, the room was good the services slightly below par - which is par for the course at a British Holiday Inn. In the age of the reasonable Lodge/Inn I would suggest a bit more attention to detail might help Holiday Inn might stand out.
