We were given a massive apartment, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, but even if we had only the one bed (which is what we paid for), we would still have been satisfied. Very spacious, with a large balcony looking over the poolside, RC air con in two rooms, good size bathroom with a bath and shower. The room was cleaned 4 times in 10 days, the other days you have to "do it yourself", but for the money we paid, I don't mind making my own bed! The TV only had CNN and Eurosport, so if you liked golf or American election coverage you were fine!
The staff were pleasant, but did not speak much English, which meant it took us much longer to find our way around (they got their left and right mixed up). However, once we got our bearings, we found Alvor a lovely place with loads of restaurants and bars. No wild night life, but we weren't there for that any way. The beach is about 20 mins walk away, but worth the walk as there was always a nice breeze there. I think ideally you would need a car if you want to make the most of the area, but there are buses to take you to various places and loads of taxis. We didn't use them so I can't say what the prices were. Went on jeep safari which was great fun and there are plenty of other excursions if you want a change from Alvor.
Would I go back? Definitely! There were no negatives at all for us, great value for money
