Dunain Park Hotel Reviews

Very nice grounds but average hotel room. The common areas are very nice and the breakfast and dinner were well cooked with good service. The rooms just looked a little dated, though was spacious, and bit too much of what my grandmother would have liked! The bathroom was... more

Loved Dunain Park Hotel
Wonderful country house feel, we really enjoyed our stop over on the way to Skye. Beautiful building and our new puppy was warmly welcomed. Made to feel like house guests rather than customers I think all the staff loved the puppy; nice rooms we had a large double room with an additional seating area, dinner was very good, very scottish with smoked salmon and venison. No bar but a couple of nice lounges. We wandered round the gardens it is very secluded and quiet but the city is on the doorstep. If you are looking for something lively this is not it but if you want peace and quiet with nice surroundings this will fit the bill. Breakfast was everything you would expect from a country house no good if you are on a diet but what the hell... A good bit cheaper than Kinloch lodge in Skye and a similar experience.
Huge disappointment! Horrid service!
What a disappointment! We received the worst service that we have ever experienced at any hotel in our years of traveling, and we also witnessed egregious examples of poor service for other guests at the hotel. We arrived late on a Saturday evening only to be turned away for dinner, since the hotel would not provide any meals outside of their formal restaurant. Not only did they decline to provide a simple dinner (sandwiches would have been fine for us), they did not even provide any useful advice as to where we might find food at that hour! Throughout our four-day stay, the general attitude of most members of the staff was to minimize effort on their part, regardless of the needs or comfort of their clientele. We were astonished that a harried breakfast staff re-seated a couple from a table of two to a table of four because they were traveling with another couple — the staff had not even taken the time to clean the table before they re-sat the couple! On our second night at dinner, the hotel was entertaining a large party that was clearly much more important than us or their other guests. We and their other “ordinary” guests received exceedingly poor service and our food was atrocious. Once again, the staff re-seated a party; this time they asked a party of four to leave the lounge to make room for the large party. These are just some examples of the exceedingly poor service that we either experienced or witnessed during our stay. This was quite unexpected considering the excellent reviews the hotel has received from several independent sources; likely, this reflects the recent change in ownership. With this poor level of service, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
Fair to average with bland food
In comparison to other places we stayed in during our trip this was poor value for money..... the place feels a bit worn out and the food is dull. Nice views, but close to the road. Our room (one of the cottages) was very chintzy.
A very nice hotel
We spent Easter weekend at Dunanin Park and would highly recommend it for anyone travelling through the HIghlands. Our suite was spacious and well furnished, and the staff could not have been more helpful and flexible. Food was also very good, particularly breakfasts, and the whisky collection is very extensive. The hotel was sold earlier this year and, according to the staff, there are plans to develop it by adding more rooms and a spa. Hope this does not change the character of what is a lovely, small hotel.
Excellent in every way
This was our our best accomodation in two weeks of touring Scotland. We and our friends had rooms 9 and 11, non-smoking suites with beautiful views. The suites are large with lots of windows, a sitting room, a little area for tea things and a refrigerator (stocked with bottles of water) and a large bowl of wonderful fresh fruit. The bathrooms are large and modern, great robes and lots of towels. The Nicolls are excellent hosts ( they have a few dogs who are extremely well behaved) and the restaurant is top quality as well as being beautifully arranged. The dessert buffet is amazing, and the dinner and breakfast menus are extensive and well executed. The dishes represent Scotland's food at its best. The wines were reasonably priced and good. The grounds are extraordinary and were still beautiful in October; it was lovely just to walk around there. This was a perfect two day stay and the staff deserves high praise for the atmosphere they maintain at Dunain Park.
Loved this place...
This place was fantastic. After two weeks of driving (for the first time) on treacherous Scottish roads it was a pleasure to put down for a few days at this relaxing hotel. Swimming in the indoor pool and relaxing by the fire with the friendly dogs that make the place their home was a great touch. The food was fantastic, I tried steak with a different sauce ever nite, my wife had seafood and chicken. All cooked to perfection. The staff was very helpful with matching wine selections and the room was beautiful. Four poster bed, towel warmers, a huge bathroom with clawfoot tub. A little pricey (if you are "middle class" like us) for a weekend excursion, but definately worth a "special" trip.
Outstanding
We had a wonderful stay at Dunain Park in 2000 and are planning to stay there again this year (2004) when we're in Inverness. The food is great and the views from the hotel are magnificent.
Loved It
What a wonderful stay. The facilities are beautiful, comfortable. The staff is the best and Edward is a joy. We would never stay anywhere else while in Inverness.
Delightful hotel, fantastic food
After a recommendation by a colleague, my husband and I booked an overnight stay at Dunain Park Hotel in February 2003. Set in beautiful gardens at the top of Loch Ness, the hotel is well located for travelling around the North of Scotland. They even have a small swimming pool and sauna in the gardens, which is a perfect way to unwind at the end of the day before meeting downstairs in the Drawing room before dinner. The evening meal was amazing - gorgeous Scottish beef and the full Scottish breakfast was astounding. I can thoroughly recommend the hotel and can't wait to visit again. Mrs L Barnsley
Simply wonderful!
I must first say that it was a couple of years ago when I stayed at the Dunain Park, but I had to post a review when I saw there currently were none. Obviously, this place made such a great impression on me that I still want to sing its praises years later! I peeked in on their web site and it looks as marvelous as when we visited. The rooms are beautiful--some bigger than others--and all are unique and gorgeously appointed. Some have stunning views of the rolling hills, the sheep and the countryside. Nothing is second rate at this hotel. The staff/proprietors are gracious and accomodating. We wanted to extend our stay and they did everything they could to assist us. As it turned out, we extended our stay, drove around the highlands, then decided to come back to this relaxing, heavenly place, so we ended up staying in three different rooms! I could've spent my entire time just being there. And I must mention the food! Dinner and breakfast was included when we stayed there, and these were some of the most delicious meals we've ever eaten. I even loved the way the missus (she's one of the proprietors and a highly trained chef) prepared haggis and black pudding. This is not a 'tourist class" hotel. The food, service, accomodation and hospitality are all luxury class, first rate and highly memorable. Obviously. Well worth every farthing!
