Intercontinental Singapore

The Intercontinental in Singapore is probably one of the worst hotel experiences I have had in over 15 years of travelling.
During my first stay in March 2005, I had a very bad experience there. The staff at the front desk did not even offer you a friendly greeting.
I had booked a month ahead for a non-smoking room but I was dumped in a smoking room because "that's the only one available". I was a Priority Club Gold Card member at that time.
As I had little choice at that time of the night, I decided to put up with it because I had a breakfast meeting at the same hotel. At about 2:00 AM, I was woken up by room service to serve me ice-cream, which I had not ordered, in spite of a do-not-disturb sign on the door!
Afterward, I complained to the hotel and they offered their apologies and invited me to stay over the next time and offered a free upgrade.
I made the mistake of taking them up on their offer in November 2005 - I ended up with the same kind of treatment - arrogant staff at the front desk who said that the upgrade was not available (I had the date of visit and the upgrade confirmed before my travel).
I demanded to see the manager who then put me in the upgraded room - I had to wait 2 hours for a room to be allocated and then found that the only upgraded room they had was once again a smoking room!!
No apology was offered this time - it was basically a take it or get out attitude.
I decided that this was the last time I was walking into the Intercontinental in Singapore.
