It has just 40 rooms (sleeps 80). The staff were very welcoming and there was coffee and cake available (around 4:30pm daily).
The was 3/4 floors of rooms, and the corridors all led off a tall spiral staircase so not ideal for getting big snowboarding bags around, since the lift was very small.
The rooms our friends got had a balcony and excellent view of the Piste. The sun shone on them and the rooms were a good size each with an en-suite bathroom. They were clean and well maintained.
Unfortunately me and my husband booked our holiday late and ended up with a shocking room with mould and rust down the walls, broken tiles in the bathroom. It was very small and uncomfortable.
I would recommend HIGHLY that if you go to the Champs Avalins hotel you pay the extra £3.50 per night when booking for a supplement room, which are bigger, cleaner, have a balcony, bath and better view.
The food at the hotel was excellent every evening, you got to chose what you wanted in the morning from their 3 course menu. (The staff have 1 day off a week) The breakfast wasn’t very good. Just bread and cereal or porridge. Each day they did an egg option, again not that good.
There is a bar downstairs which is cosy and a little cheaper than bars in town.
They don’t seem to clean the rooms, or at least they didn’t clean ours, which isn’t ideal when you’re in there all week
The chalet is only a 4-5 minute walk to the main funicular train which takes you upto a good range of mountains, and there is a red run which brings you back to that spot at the end of the day, so no long walks or buses with your heavy equipment.
To get into town you need to get a bus, or walk 20-30 minutes, but it’s all straight and flat so not too bad. In town there is a great selection of bars and clubs.
Dicks Tea Bar was one of the best and the Pacific Bar which is great for sport, with about 8 massive TVs. For a truly unique meal from Le Canyon restaurant, it’s expensive but amazing.
Take plenty of cash to Val D'Isere, it’s not cheap, but the Champs Avalins was good value for money IF (big IF) you pay extra for the supplement rooms
Enjoy Val D'Isere.
