Great Value for Money

Sep 2011, D&NAF

My husband & I (both over 70) stayed at the Ocean for 1 week 10th - 17th September 2011.
Cannot speak highly enough of hotel itself, staff, food and position.
Hotel spotlessly clean (if a little tired in places).
All Staff were excellent. very professional, very friendly and very efficient.
Food excellent, plenty of choice and well presented.
Hotel position couldn't be better, stones throw from beach and High Street on doorstep.
Gardens lovely, well maintained & very private.
No hesitation in recommending the Ocean.
PS:- also good location for families due to beach access etc.

  • Advice: Hire a car for ease of access all over island
  • Good For: Beach
  • Board Basis:Half Board
  • Tour Operator:Robinson"s

The only time the hotel looks better that the photo in the brochure. The room was excellent, very clean, the view fantastic. Staff very friendly and helpful and delicious meals. Pool heated (with steps) and not busy with plenty or loungers and deck chairs. We stayed only 3 nights but wished we had booked for longer. We can thoughly recommend this hotel.

  • Advice: Pay the extra for the sea view
  • Good For: Beach
  • Board Basis:half board

Hotel clean though faded.Restaurant staff superb.Food awful-we ate out some days. Wonderful cafe across the road. They sell homemade food.Would NOT recommend this to anyone. We didn't receive value for money. We feel we were taken for fools. We complained while we were there but were told to write to them on our return home. What earthly use is that!!!No-one was vaguely interested.Sandown is very run down and tatty.I would not wish to visit the IOW again-this episode has coloured our attitude.

  • Advice: Avoid it at all costs
  • Board Basis:Half board
  • Tour Operator:Robinsons holidays

A FABULOUS PLACE TO STAY

The Ocean Hotel is situated on Sandown Esplanade and has commanding views of the bay. Whilst one can enter the hotel via the Esplanade, there is also another entrance onto Sandown High Street which is handy for shopping. There's also King's Bar further up the street which is owned by the hotel and is a lovely place to relax after shopping. It has decking looking out onto the bay.
The hotel itself is a pleasure to stay in. Checking in is easy and friendly, and my room was clean and very comfortable.
The restaurant overlooks the gardens and sea. The menu is comprehensive, food is well cooked and presented and the staff very efficient. There was always a welcoming smile and greeting from the Restaurant Manageress
The Colonial Bar again overlooks the sea and I want to say a big thank you to Anthony and Martin for being so courteous, friendly and making us all laugh and enjoy ourselves at night.
I have to be honest and mention a down-side. The entertainment on six of the seven nights borders from mediocre to downright terrible. Whilst we gave each entertainer a good chance to entertain us, we were forced each evening to either go out or go to our room and watch TV.
But the hotel should be proud of the entertainer on the Sunday night. We've never laughed, danced and sang so much as we did with him. His name is Paul, plays a keyboard and sings. The standard from him is absolutely the best we have ever seen in any hotel we've ever stayed at. He doesn't just stand and sing. He presented us with a show of songs, anecdotes and jokes that appealed to us all. So much so that even though it was our last night and had planned to go to bed early, we stayed up until he finished. Well done Paul for making our last night truly the climax of our holiday.
We must stay again next year - but only if Paul is on again.

A splendid large, traditional...

A splendid large, traditional Victorian seafront hotel. This hotel looks very attractive from the esplanade, with its sub tropical gardens (a narrow strip of well maintained garden with deck chairs in front of the hotel).
There is an outdoor swimming pool discretely located behind a fence in the garden, providing shelter from the sea breezes. The public areas are grand and spacious, with a huge double staircase. A lift is provided. The hotel is double fronted, always located on your left when driving, due to the one way system. There is a small car park accessed from the esplanade.
Arrive early to ensure a parking space; due to the large number of coach party guests fortunately not too many travel by car. Reception is one level above the lobby, lounge and dining room. The entrance from the High Street is opposite Somerfield’s supermarket. I would advise a sea view or balcony room (unless you don’t want to look out of the window).
The comfortable entrance lobby leading out to the garden on the sea side doubles as a smoking room (as at October 2006) where guests can lounge in big sofas. There is a snooker room; play room for little children; also a mothers room for preparation of baby foods, with microwave.
I think there was also a small, quiet lounge next to reception. Hairdryers are available on request, but you have to phone reception each time you want to borrow one, then return it afterwards. Evening entertainment is provided, perhaps a singer and keyboard player.
The dining room overlooks the garden and sea, with chandeliers (including a few cobwebs), table service for breakfast as well as dinner. We enjoyed the food, we stayed half board, and were given a good choice, including vegetarian. There were three courses plus coffee in the evening. There is a wide choice of reasonably priced house wines. Breakfast was traditional full English, everything served at the table to order (no buffet).
Our bedroom was rather faded and shabby, as was the en suite bathroom. The furniture was cramped, due to there being one more bed provided than required. Beds are made up with sheets & blankets. The overbath shower attachment was not very effective, poor water pressure and variable temperature.
Our room was bright and sunny (hence the faded furnishings) the sea view was lovely, with huge double glazed windows. We were provided with desk and chair, reasonably comfortable bed, television, tea & coffee making facilities.
Staff are professional, polite and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed being waited on in the Ocean Hotel. It looks like the nicest and best located hotel in Sandown. Our booking was made direct with the hotel as a ferry inclusive package, it was good value for money.
