Just returned from Pefkos which has a lovely beach but the Thalia was horrible. We booked a self catering room just for the fridge and a kettle for a morning coffee. There was no kettle and the fridge was very old, rusty and not adequatly cool enough. That would have... more

Our party of 4 has just come back from a 7 night stay at the Thalia Hotel. On arrival we asked why we were not put next to each other as we did request this. We were told that the hotel was full but at least you are on the same floor but nowhere near each other. Our view... more

Low cost, but satisfactory
I travelled to Rodos with Olympic Holidays, my first use of that company. It was a last minute cheap deal. I didn't expect much. I got more than I bargained for. And, no rain! Two weeks as a self-catering guest, flying direct from Manchester; including vegan meals for the flights, all supplements for a single person, taxes and the ticket on departure collection fee, I paid £274.00 for what was quite a reasonable two week stay in a very beautiful hot and sunny island. There were some problems. I was told my luggage allowance would be 15 kilos. It was 20kg. I could have brought my own vegan foods had I known. The local restaurants had no concept of what a vegan eats. Even salads came with cheese. The local supermarkets had various prices for the same goods; a litre of orange juice in one cost 1.7 euros, the same cost 80 cents in another. Spuds cost as much as 1.9 euros, and as little as 80 cents elsewhere. I found the resort in Pefkos much more expensive than Rhodes Town. But, I got by. There were some bargains. I bought a hat for 2.4 euros. I needed it. The sun was very strong with a UV index of 10. And the Island is quite beautiful and is well worth a visit or two. Lindos is one of the most atractive villages, though a little too touristy in places. Rhodes Town is a fine example of a medieval fortified town. From Pefkos it costs 1.2 euros by bus to Lidos and 4.7 euros to Rhodes Town. The buses are air-conditioned coaches. National Express style rather than corporation transport. The hotel Thalia is family owned. It's quite large, 100 rooms, but has an intimate feel to it. The room I was given was small. Indeed, it was the smallest self-catering room that I've ever used. Two single beds, a stool, dressing unit, reasonable sized wardrobes, sink and two ringed cooker, a small frige and a shower/toilet room. No table, or chairs in the room, just a couple of plastic chairs on the tiny balcony and a plastic table. The ceiling fan in my room did not work. Perhaps a ploy to get the fee for air-condintioning out of guests! The room was quiet though and provided a view of the hotel garden and the distant Pefkos Bay. My supper was quite comfortably taken on the balcony in the balmy heat of the evening. Some rooms that over-look the pool bar are far from quiet. Music goes on until 1 am. The public areas to the hotel are air-conditioned, but guests are required to pay 40 euros per week for the room air-conditioning. I had not factored this in, and though the day-time temperattures soared to as much as 54 C, I managed to get by, using the airconditioned reception as my living room and I soon mastered the remote control of the TV to watch BBC World and various sports channels. A library of books is available to guests in the reception and there is also a small bar. The pool area is well supplied with free sun beds and parasoles. I had no problem obtaining a bed and cover from the sun. The pool is of a reasonable size and has a slide for the children and some adults. By the pool is a bar/restaurant. It has its own TVs, usually tuned to English language programmes and a full range of sky sports is available, free, on request. Beer is about 2 euros for half a litre. Coctails from 3 euros, with lots of umbrellas, fruit and the odd sparkler or two. But, the best thing about this hotel - the guests. Good, down to earth and friendly folkes. I made many good friends and have lovely memories of my stay. Thanks everyone. Pefkos is a very small resort. It has three lovely beaches. The main street is full of restaraunts that meat-eaters will love, but veggies will hate the smell of the burning flesh. There are a good number of supermarkets, but they supply limited amounts of vegetables. No carrots! Few apples. Lots of oranges. One last note, Olympic was not what I expected. It was much better. The representative, Toni, was a delight and always had time of a chat.
get what you pay for
June 13th Thalia Hotel We booked this hotel with Olympic Holidays and it was a very reasonable price. After reading the reviews on it I was quite apprehensive. The truth is we got what we paid for a basic Greek hotel. It's certainly in need of some TLC and yes the towels could be changed more often but if you ask politely then you will be given some. We had a fortnight at this hotel and we found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The pool area is quite nice but watch out for loose floor tiles. The breakfast was typical Greek bread, boild eggs, juice and coffee. But the pool bar opened about 10am and did a very nice English breakfast plus plenty of other meals. If you book the Thalia dont go expecting 4star accomadtion and you wont be dissapointed. We wanted a relaxing fortnight that wasn't expensive and thats what we got.
this hotel is a no no!
I will keep this review brief and to the point the hotel is dire!!! When we were there we experienced unchanged bed lining, two towel changes in a week, one I had to prise of the igorant Manager who seemed to show contempt towards the holiday makers, seemed he didn't have the time, extremely poor breakfast didn't bother after we viewed it on the first day went to a local cafe 100% better! for rest of the stay in Pefkos. This hotel is in need of a revamp or a bulldozer things seem to rundown or falling apart! To be honest the pool area was OK and the bar area, but beware of broken drains around near the pool, could cut your leg wide open! I have been to some places but this the worst I've been to!!! stay clear you need your brain tested if you chose this hotel after you read my review!!! I kid you not!!!
loved the thalia
we stayed in june 2006 and enjoyed our stay, but to be honest when my wife booked it i read reports and thought oh ****, but just go with an open mind , it's a good hotel in a cracking resort, we've been to this resort 4 times and have just booked thalia again. Thalia is a friendly place in a ideal position and like everyone else in Pefkos the staff are very nice. Here's a good tip, if you're on a diet go elsewhere, because you'll be spoilt for chioce with places to eat, try Trimmis up the hill great food and good service. See you soon Christos and Ravi. Sandra and Geoff. from Oldbury ,West Mids
won't return!
My husband and myself adore rhodes so we knew pefkos was a good choice, but i would'nt say the thalia was. It is very basic, which isn't a problem because that is greece! But the room itself was a bit of an experience, the flush didnt work properly and we had a leak from the room above when they showered. The maids changed the bins but not the sheets, so by the end of our holiday the bathroom and the linen were grubby and dirty. Also, i did'nt think the staff were particulary friendly which i found very unusual as the greeks are normally very over the top, so it was nice to get out and about to see some friendly faces elsewhere. The music in the pool bar went on till all hours which can be a bit annoying when you trying to sleep. So thalia, no, but pefkos definatley, yes!!!!
Best Ever
Having read mixed reviews of Thalia was a little apprehensive. Need not have worried, hotel was basic but clean, very good value for money. Nikos was very helpful, anything we asked for was provided. Theo did a brilliant job in the bar every night, always smiling! Was made to feel welcome by all. The pool area was fantastic, only ventured to the beach once, sea was lovely, but was happy to stay around the hotel all day. Went out to a different restaurant every night, not a bad meal to be had, then back to the Thalia bar for a fun filled night with fellow guests. The most relaxing holiday I have ever had, would recommend the Thalia and Pefkos to anyone. I will be back!
Dire
Just returned from Pefkos and part of my travelling party stayed in the Thalia Hotel. All we can say is that the standard of hygiene was very poor, the fridge in the room switched off when we left the room, therefore defrosting and then flooding the floor when the door was opened and the hotel staff had to be the most ignorant unfriendly people I have ever come across in all my years of travelling! The bathroom was tiny with the door almost hitting off the toilet! A member of my party was constantly bitten by something in her room and she had enough mossy detterents to destroy a colony of them! I do not wish to speculate as to what was eating her, but she ended up with antibiotics for an infection she developed from the bites. She was not the only one with this problem. The breakfast was bread and jam and one egg every other day. On the day of our departure we noted that new bed linen and pillows were being delivered, maybe that will improve the problem but to me it's just superficial. Do yourself a favour don't go to the Thalia!
Kisses to you all from here in snowy Newcastle!
We stayed in the Thalia for our first time in 2003. My brother was getting married in Lindos and our whole family were over. The Thalia is what it says, basic, clean, comfortable and above all so very friendly. Our family ended up joining us every night from their hotels/apartments to come to the Thalia, they love it so much! We went back to Rhodes last year (2005) but couldn't get booked in Thalia. This did not stop us visiting the bar and the lovely Theo and his family most night, esp. enjoyed the Tequila birthday bash! We plan to book to go back 2007 to see them all again and stay at Thalia. If you want a wonderful relaxing family holiday, the Thalia is for you. Traditional Greek nights/BBQ's are brill and so are all the staff. Our daughters particularly enjoyed the home made do-nuts!! (my waistline didn't!)... only problem is the web address for Thalia I have does not work, does anyone have the correct one?? Kisses to all, love Marie, John, Helen & Holly xxxx
A recommendation
We had read negative remarks on other sites regarding Thalia, so we were alittle "scared" before coming there. But, it was a great hotel, with awesome staff. Of course the rooms were basic, but I paid for a basic room, and got it. First trip to Rhodes, but thanks to the staff and to the wonderful Pefkos, it will not be the last. I'd also like to say hi to all the wonderful people from England, Scotland and Wales we met there. Hope to see you lot next year!
Just the best ever....
We had the pleasure of staying at the Thalia as a last minute holiday that we booked via teletext. We had the most fantastic time there and cannot fault it in any way.... The family that own the hotel are the most helpful, friendly and obliging. They will do their best to accomodate your every need and are a continuous ray of helpfulness and laughter. We enjoyed it so much that we flew back eight weeks later for another stay. It is the first time I am stuck to find anything negative to say.. It really is the best holiday We have ever had and will be returning for our third visit in september..
