The Thon Hotel Munch is within easy reach from the central train and bus stations. It lies on Munchsgate, which itself is simple to find, although the actual hotel lies around a corner, although this was really not an inconvenience at all because once I went in to the hotel I was welcomed very warmly.
I checked in, in the native language and happily the receptionist replied in Norwegian too, instead of patronizingly switching to English when it is clear that a British tourist is (for once) making an effort with the language. All the receptionists and hotel staff were the kindest, most helpful and most welcoming that I have ever come across anywhere in the world, I cannot possibly fault any one of them.
The room itself was very comfortable indeed, and exceeded my expectations for a 3* hotel. The bedroom was a decent size, and the bathroom was rather luxurious, with a heated tiled floor and a large and powerful shower. In the bedroom was a television which, when I arrived, was switched on and had a personal message of welcome, and a few instructions and hints, which I found very homely and a nice little extra effect. The television had all the main Norwegian channels, as well as a few Swedish ones and also BBC World.
The breakfast room is very large, ensuring that the slightly uncomfortable situation of two strangers sitting silently sharing a table is avoided. The food at breakfast was a wide variety, and you could go and get more as often as you wanted. The hotel does not offer evening meals, but the breakfast room is open 24 hours a day for guests to get unlimited hot and cold drinks and small snacks.
The hotel is in an ideal location: go down Rosenkrantzgate for less than 200 metres and you arrive at Oslo's - and Norway's - main street, Karl Johans Gate. At one end is the central train station; at the other end is the royal palace; and in the one kilometre or so in between are all the shops and shopping arcades that you will ever need, as well as Norway's house of parliament and national theatre.
If you don't feel like walking, the nearest tram stop is literally less than a minute by foot from the hotel. Oslo's tram system is as good as the best ones in the world. For NKR60 (a bit less than £6 or $11), you can buy a day ticket for unlimited use on all of the Oslo region's (not just Oslo but also the large surrounding area) public transport - busses, trams, boats and suburban trains.
I would highly recommend the Thon Hotel Munch - because it is in a perfect location for visitors who want to see Oslo; and because the staff are as kind and helpful as you will ever find.
