" A good base for exploring Oslo -... "
Submitted By: Jo30
A good base for exploring Oslo - however anyone travelling here over Christmas should be aware that Oslo practically closes at this time!
The hotel seemed to be on skeleton staff; however the Swedish concierge was incredibly helpful and phoned around lots of restaurants to see if they were open. We only found one!
And this was a Turkish restaurant that served an odd combination of food (Chicken Tikka was three goujons of chicken with a pink like sauce, with chips, salad and very thick Nan bread).
The hotel was impeccable, the room had an incredibly comfy bed and free internet access - we were upgraded to a business room which included free movies. I had no complaints about anything in the room! It was very close to the Royal Palace and a short walk to the harbour.
Akke Brigge is the area around the harbour and when it's not closed is a lovely place to go, filled with lots of restaurants and shops and the views of the little islands and fjords were breathtaking in the weather we had.
Most of the shops and some of the restaurants finally opened on the 27th and we actually saw other people! Be aware - we were told that nearly all restaurants close on the 23rd and do not reopen until the 2nd January.
Oslo is expensive and a small sandwich in the hotel cost about £6. The restaurant in the hotel was superb, but that was closed on Christmas and Boxing Day.
The bar meals were of just a good quality, although still more expensive to eat in the hotel than out.
I adore Oslo and this was my second trip - it is expensive, but none more so than eating out in London.
Go in the summer and take a trip around the harbour, visit the museums and hang out around Akke Brigge, you'll love it too!

Strangely for December, Oslo had no snow... in fact, it wasn’t far of T-shirt weather, which was cool but a little disappointing I guess, but hey...
The hotel rooms are supremely clean and comfortable.
The location is superb. I love to go out and walk a chunk of a city when I arrive and whilst it was dark, I got to see both sides of Oslo... day and night.
The following morning a rather delicious breakfast was followed by another long walk around the city to see what wonders I could find.
Being a keen photographer, I more than got my fill of enjoyment.
Price wise, it was very reasonable... and favourably comparable with a nice hotel in European capital.
I got some brownie points too, as the Norwegian clothing shop in the basement had exactly what my wife wanted for Christmas.
It’s a beautiful city... highly recommended.
This is a great base to start the trip, you won’t regret it.
