Go Coconuts!
from Daba100
Me and my brother went for a relaxing holiday to Goa and stayed five nights with Coconut Grove and reading the recent reviews we are a bit surprised; we had an excellent stay even though we're not seniors...Rooms are comfortable and clean and the staff very helpful and friendly. We ate at the restaurant several nights and the food was great, in fact much better than the one we were served at famous Martins Corner (where we got hen instead of chicken...). The hotel and surroundings are well kept with beautiful flowers - even though the beach could be cleaner... The beach is nearby and not crowded (sun-beds free of charge) either by fellow travellers or by vendors. We would agree with the review regarding Russian travellers behaviour though...
good if you're a pensioner

First, let me set the platform: I'm 56, divorced, and was traveling with friends who stayed at a different hotel. That said, Coconut Grove is OK if you're over 60 and want to sit by the pool or meander to the beach through the dry rice paddies. Its also OK if you don't mind taking a taxi to everything else as nothing is wiithin walking distance at all - except the beach. The beach closest to Coconut Grove has two beach shacks. Each is OK. A few minutes down the beach, in front of the Nanu Resort, are 5 shacks, but that's just an example of how the Coconut Grove has little to offer itself. As for the hotel, it is pretty enough, especially the open-air reception, but the units are mediocre at best. I was on the ground floor; the room smelled damp. If you had told me the place was built in 1980 and about to be updated, I would have believed you, but, in fact, the hotel is only about 5 years old. The decor is pseudo-Mediterranean; the bathroom's in need of repair (cracked caulking; loose toilet seat); and the towels are like sandpaper on a newly reddened skin. The mini bar contains nothing but drinks - no snacks - not even cashews for which Goa is famous. I compared Coconut Grove to the Oceanique where friends were staying. Their rooms were more modern; bathrooms much nicer; balconies larger, and pool better placed. I will not stay at Coconut Grove again. It is just too remote and nothing to write home about to be so isolated.
Wow is this the best hotel in south Goa we think so

Well just returned from the best holiday weve ever had , there are lots of reasons why . First and formost the hotel was set in portugese style with picture perfect gardens palm trees swaying gently in the brezze , the rooms whilst not the plushest were well presented cleaned and tidyed every day bed changed every other day , all had tv,fridge, tea&coffee making faciltys and the obligatory hair dryer oh and a nice balcony. The staff were friendly, helpfull and always smiling , Sonny the hotel manager was on the premises daily and always happy to see us. The hotel is just a 2 min walk to the beach where you will find a selection of beach shacks , Joels famile shack was the best we visited , Joel was the host & his wife was the chef , the food was some of the best food we ate in Goa and joel & famile were always pleased to see you (the second reason for our perfect holiday) . Whilst in Goa we visited lots of places the one id recomend is Margoa just find the little bar & coffee house near the market and watch the comotion the best free enertainment id ever seen ., the market (if you brave the comotion) sells anything and everything (Smirnoff £3.50 a ltr ciggies £7.50 for 200 safron£2.00 a box & vanilla pods £2.00 for ten ) but be prepaired to haggle the goan's love it . All in all 10/10 c u soon goa luv R&J

Went with two girlfriends on a business/vacation. Couldn't find more delightful staff - so friendly and welcoming. We didn't eat in the restaurant except for breakfast as we wanted to sample more authentic indian food - not toned down for the tourists. Best restaurant by far was Martins Corner, a short taxi ride away. Great atmosphere and the food was amazing. We also ate lunch at the beach shack cooked to order by Santana - so cheap too. The taxi drivers were very friendly - we used to book them for a day at a time and alternated between three of them as they run a very strict queue system and always adhere to it otherwise they get a hefty fine. Taxi fares are regulated but obviously they are more due to the hotel mark up but still cheap for us. The boys in the bar were masters at creating cocktails for us in the evening! Only downsides were the rubbish on the left of the beach as you walk down and the Russians in the hotel who were loud, offensive, with no manners.
Fantastic Stay

Stayed here Nov 2006. Having been to Goa several times in several hotels would highly recommend this one. All staff very helpful and ensure a good stay. Just a short walk through the paddy field takes you onto the beach where there are several shacks but can be difficult in the dark, highly recomended
Cosmetically beatiful

We have just returned from the Coconut Grove, and have visited Southern Goa many times, but this was our first stay in this resort. THE BAR/RESTAURANT STAFF ARE BRILLIANT. If you are looking for a very quiet holiday and intend to use the hotel only and the two shacks on the beach then this is the place for you, the other restaurants are only accessible by taxi. The resort is well planned out and very picturesque, but it is cosmetic. We had a "cottage" which was spacious with lounge and kitchen (no cooking facilities) bedroom and bathroom, the bath was cracked so could not take a bath, and it needed a bit of a re-vamp i.e. the mastic round the bath was coming away and the bath had been painted! On our first night there we exchanged travellers cheques at reception - we were given 76 Rupees to the £ : We later found out that other money exchangers were giving 85 Rupees to the £ : Needless to say we did not use that facility again. The food was ok, but we did find that the vegetables served with main courses always came out cold. The bar area was very small, BUT THE WORST THING OF ALL was the disgusting smell from the old rotten food that was just behind the bar, we eventually had to buy incense sticks to put along the bar to cover up the smell - this was reported to the manager, he did try aerosol spray but this only lasted a few minutes. We did find the hotel to be very clean.
The best located hotel in the area

Beautiful hotel, with well appointed rooms and the necessary AC. Head chef is ex-PO Cruise ships so food quality and hygiene standards excellent (no Delhi Belly here). The owner has a number of highly prestigious properties around the world and this was no exception. Staff were delightful - it was a very friendly hotel. We really enjoyed our stay here and went on a few great trips with the taxi boys outside (set your fare before you leave!). Only downsides were that they closed the AC restaurant in favour of eating outside (under cover) but it was very hot and humid even at night. We would have preferred to eat indoors; and the pool looks deceptively large in the brochures - it is really quite small but adequate but could have been clearer. Used by Russian tour operators, so lots of Russian visitors present. Popular with the locals too, coming to use the pool and eat out. The hotel had the best spot along the great beach. We walked to Majorda in one direction and Colva in the other and were convinced that the beach was best here. Cheap to eat, cheap to drink, cheap to get around. We loved it and will go back some day. We think it was the best of the bunch.
Terrible service-Would not recommend staying there.

Stayed here a week, and managed to have a Cottage room as they had run out of rooms, even though I booked in advance. The Manager asked me to move to another 5 star hotel down the road for 1 night after my first night, but compensated me with free dinners for my last 2 nights (I didn't like the Majorda Beach as much as it was too big, busy and impersonal). Only downside to Cottage room is that on a "themed" night, as the room is close to the restaurant, the noise from the music etc can keep you awake if you want an early night. Cottage was comfortable, the bathroom was OK but could do with an update (and I am fusy about bathrooms!). Power cuts were regular, but power came back on again quickly. The setting of the hotel was excellent, being only a short 250m walk to the beach and the Arabian Sea. It was easy to ge around with a driver I used from the Hotel, and taxis are cheap. A "must do" is a visit to a Spice Plantation, especially if you eat Indian food and know all the spices used in the cooking! All in all, a good stay for a week for my first time to Goa. I'll be back with my family next time, and would stay here again.

If you want a quiet, moderately inexpensive (but not cheap) place then Coconut Grove is for you. 200 yards from the sea, half a mile from local shops it has everything you want. Friendly staff, good food, small but good pool (it doesnt need to be bigger, the sea is 200 yards... more
