I recommend anyone to go to Athens, just get a cheap flight arrange accommodation in a hostel or b&b for a cheap price, then once you are there you can go to the port and do some island hopping.
The ferries from the port are very cheap (about £10-20 return) to any Greek island. Absolutely stunning islands and wonderful people. Guaranteed pretty much fantastically glorious weather throughout the whole of spring and summer.
Athens itself is lovely, go for a walk, get lost, see lots of relics, and meet lovely people. Go on the subway and the train and go places its a huge place full of great things to do. Go to the National Park too, its a site to see.
