Have over the years been to many of the Greek islands - but Samos has been our favourite now for the last six years. It may be that the Zeus Apts are classed as basic - but believe me compared to some of the places we have stayed it is excellent value for money. The owners are very friendly and the accommodation is very clean and airy.

Ireon itself is a lovely place and the people are great - one taverna to visit is "To Kyma"the food is brilliant and the location right by the sea makes it a pleasure to eat there - on saying that there are plenty of places to eat and all of them are good. I would say Samos isn't the prettiest island we have been to but some of the views on the coastal roads are breathtaking.

Just got back from Zeus on 28/6/07. Had a fantastic time.

Having been to many Greek islands the Zeus is no different to any other self catering accommodation we’ve stayed in.

Yes it is very basic, but that is the Greek way. The staff are lovely and friendly. Hello to Maria and Vicci. Thank you for both helping me with my learning of the language.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the village is fantastic.

The food and the drink in the tavernas are out of this world. You can sit and eat right on the water’s edge, which most of the time is like a millpond.

Go there it’s great.

Holiday didn't start well as we were checked in by the non English speaking maid who tried to tear out our return flight tickets. There wasn't any staff there who could speak English until the 2nd week of our holiday.

We had booked an apartment but later in the week found out this was actually a studio.

The self catering equipment was nonexistent. 2 small plastic bowls, 2 glasses, 2 small tea cups, one stew pan, and a colander. The cutlery consisted on 3 forks, 2 knives, and 2 teaspoons. No corkscrew/tin opener/sharp knife/kettle.

Safety deposit boxes were stated in the brochure. This was not the case. When we queried the lack of equipment and the deposit boxes we were told by the rep they would be supplied or added to. This didn't happen. We had a major problem with ants (black toothbrushes on the first morning and we had to keep all the food in the fridge).

The swimming pool wasn't as clean as it should have been, and there were no depth markings. The water in the children’s pool came upto about 9 inches below the level of the pool with no steps. Young children would find it hard to get out.

However! We loved Ireon, a small fishing village about a 10 minute walk down a well lit road, with plenty of tavernas and friendly staff in the shops.

Any of the tavernas on the sea front to the left of the square are good, in particular the steak house at the end. We hired a car from Friendly (aptly named) which was very reasonable and toured the island. Manalades is well worth a visit, make sure you go to Louka's at the top of the village, the best Greek salad by far and what views.

Would we go again? Yes to Ireon but not to Zeus.

I have read reviews since (having had them translated from German) and it seems that all my concerns have been ongoing for some time.

I have posted the same concerns on the tour operator's site but surprisingly they haven't been published.

So my advice, if you go, take some sort of basic stuff (sharp knife etc), some ant powder, oh and a set of earplugs as the military base just up the road bugles at 6.30 am and after 11pm.
