This was our third cruise and first with Thomson. It was absolutely wonderful.

The itinerary was well thought out. Highlights were Corinth Canal, Santorini, and Mykonos. We went to Montenegro instead of Albania and that was also spectacular.

The size of the ship meant that the pool and gym were very small. The food, however, both in variety and quality was superb. Our standard cabin on Deck 2 was more than adequate and the public rooms light and airy. The staff were friendly and very helpful.

The shows in the evening were as good if not better than shows in the West End.

Tips for future travellers: Take your own hairdryer the one in the cabin is laughable.

Read the blurp on the tours from the ship carefully to make sure it is really the one you want to go on as we thought they were quite expensive. Most of the ports of call from the shipside or tender are worth visiting without travelling farther afield.

To sum up it was a great holiday and we would go on the Calypso again.

My wife and I sailed on the Calypso on the 24th Sep 2007 on the Aegean Wonders, this is our 7th cruise and would rate it as one of the best we have ever had.

We sailed from Thessaloniki after a flawless journey from Manchester, first stop Nauplion, not a lot here though very pleasant and clean.

Next we stopped at Tinos, again very clean and apparently a very holy place; there are a lot of shops selling religious items and general tourist tat. Nice church at the top of the hill.

Same day we arrived at Santorini or Thora as it is now called, and wow, this is the most dramatic landscape I have ever seen, you actually sail into a caldera, or an extinct volcano, there were about 5 other ships in there as well, Santorini town was up on the side of the cone of the volcano, the only way to get up it though is either walk, ride on a donkey or up on a cable car, the cable car having a 1 hour queue, but worth it.

The town up there is breathtaking as are the views over the volcano, and we saw the most dramatic sunset ever, there are plenty of restaurants which actually hang on the very edge of the long drop down, yikes!

Coming down was so funny, we decided to walk because of the queues, it took an hour to get down in the dark and walking slowly through masses of manure, I was picking up pensioners left right and centre, who were slipping over everywhere, oh and you had to run to one side when the huge donkeys came running up and down, one woman screamed all the way down on the back of a donkey, so funny.

Next stop Marmaris, Turkey, very nice, lovely marina and harbour, but beware you will be pestered from the beginning, relentlessly, they must rub their hands when they see a cruise ship coming and they are experts at extracting money off you, do not stop to talk or accept any offers from anyone, they will be ripping you off, watch for the grapes seller he will place trays of grapes and ask for money then give you change in Turkish Lira to confuse you, just ignore him and walk past.

This place has many shops and bazaars, markets to us, but remember it is all fake and generally rubbish, so haggle, offer at least a quarter of the asking price.

Next is Kusadasi, slightly better than Marmaris, but we went horse riding to the beach here which was fantastic, well worth doing.

Last but not least, Mykonos, we have stayed here for week once and we really like it, not much to do but it is very pretty, can be windy and the prices of the bars is very high, expect to pay 6 Euros for a beer and about 5 for a coffee.

We got back to Thessaloniki and spent a few hours there; it is a very big noisy city but has some very chique shops and bars, quite nice really.

About the Calypso, it is very small but this did not deter us from having a great cruise, it is old but I like older ships they have character and charm and the staff are great.

The cabin was a superior outside (506) but had a restricted view, be careful of this you need to specify this when booking, they will charge you to pre-book it, a bit naughty really, and I have sent a letter of complaint about it.

The food, entertainment, all good, good tip though if you are getting a hot buffet ask for a hot plate as there are a lot of salads and the plates are cold.

Frank Hammond is the cruise director, a nice chap from Sheffield; he is married to Dominique, one of the entertainers. These 11 entertainers really need a mention, they can all sing, dance, act, and they perform plays, and do all the evening shows, nothing too glamorous because the stage is so small, but they are all very talented.

The “Happy band” play easy listening music in the captain’s bar, which is quite pleasant.

One let down is that there are no deck parties because of the lack of space, I like having a boogie on the deck in the evening, so I missed this, the pool is so small it is unusable really, but all in all it was a great cruise and I would recommend it to anyone.

An excellent cruise all round, I could be picky about many little things like some people do but it would serve no purpose, my wife and I had a great time.

The ship is small but very friendly, food excellent, entertainment excellent, great itinery, it all went like clockwork.

If you want your food hot ask for a hot plate!! It’s not rocket science??

Warning!! We went to Marmaris and Kusadasi whilst beautiful, we were pestered all day long, the famous bazaars are a nightmare and full of fake garbage, there is only one intention of the Turkish people here and that is to get your money no matter what, some were actually abusive and rude, so avoid like the plague, very uncomfortable.

Note for Turkish shop owners...if you left us alone and priced your items we would come into your shops and buy, please take note.

Santorini was breathtaking and well worth visiting, watch for the sunset, simply beautiful, however there a lot of queues for the cable car and you could be waiting 2 hours, we decided to walk back down the donkey path, bad mistake, it was steep and full of manure, I was picking up pensioners left right and centre, and then you had to dodge the donkeys as the ran passed you, good fun though and it was the highlight of our holiday, one woman screamed all the way down on the back of a donkey. Ha ha.

But overall this was a great little ship and I would recommend her no problem.

Thomson’s Calypso Aegean Wonders and Crimean Discovery’s.

What a fantastic holiday two weeks of wall to wall sunshine and as much food as you wished, delightful crew polite helpful what more could you ask for? A captain who made the right decisions at the right time, i.e. our diversion owing to high winds to the isle of Siros. [That’s when the moaners started if only they had read the terms and conditions.]

The second week was Crimean discovery which was very interesting for my wife and I this part of the world is a gem for history buffs. Constanta, Romania was missed out; we were told that the town had closed for winter. But we had a long stopover in Istanbul, turkey that made up for it.

As for Sevastopol what a lovely place, wish we could have stayed longer canakkale I would certainly recommend the Gallipoli tour as the tour to troy in my view was naff. 2 down notes on the whole trip 1 all inclusive £120 per week or £99 per week - what was it?

The airport at Thessaloniki on the return is so disorganised it took so long to check in they were boarding as soon as we got to the gate. A big thanks to the captain & crew.

My wife and I spent two weeks on board the Calypso. We had a detour to the island of Siros because of high winds on Tinos, the captain did not want to endanger his passengers and ship, which was commendable but you should have heard the wingers because of the detour.

The cabin was forward, small compared to the Spirit all of the crew went out of their way to please food was great.

I just wish Thomson would settle on a price for all inclusive £90 £120 £140, something wrong somewhere or is it done on the area one lives?

All in great cruise worth it I shall be back.

Just back from our first cruise, my husband had been wanting to do a cruise for some time but I always had reservations . When I read about the Calypso it seemed to fit the bill, small & friendly ,adults only plus the itinerary really appealed.

So we took the plunge & booked it in May of 2006, Thompson didn’t take over the ship until spring this year, so I eagerly awaited the reviews. Which to start with were not too good "horror" but improved as time went on.

Yes the ship is old & flat bottomed but she really is a little gem . We paid extra for a premier cabin with a double bed which I wanted to bring home ,very comfortable from the first night. It’s true , the crew really are superb everyone of them & we found the food excellent in both restaurants.

The food in the bistro was not the same as the main restaurant as was mentioned in previous reviews & it was always hot when we ate in there. The meals in the main restaurant were first class, we opted for second sitting which worked well for us. The first sitting is a little early if you go on any trips, we did three.

Romania had been dropped off the itinerary the week before we went giving us extra time in Istanbul which is much better as one day isn't enough. In Bulgaria we did the village trip, we had a great guide who was very informative. Take a warm jacket & shoes rather than sandals as its in the foothills of the Balkans & the wind was cold the day we went.

Sevastapol, we did the Khans palace trip ,think the Panorama would have been better for us after talking to people who had done it. The plus side of the K palace was the drive to get there ,the guide again was very good.

For anyone who has not been to Istanbul this is for you. Firstly make sure on the outward journey on the Tuesday evening after the formal night to get up on deck round about 11pm(they do announce it) all lit up its just magical! Don’t miss it as you don’t get another chance on the way back, you do get a beautiful sunset though.

Be careful with the trips here, we did Taste of Istanbul & felt ripped off to the tune of £66-to be fair we were unlucky with the guide on this one. It was very rushed ,we were virtually running round with no time to take pictures.

The thing is as we found out later you can walk in from the ship to the Topkapi palace in 20 mins at a leisurely pace. Turn left outside the terminal & follow the tram track. The palace St Sofia & the Blue mosque are very close together.

We did the palace on the Sat which is a must see! Six of us had a brilliant day & by walking in made it much more fascinating & enjoyable. I wouldn’t recommend going off on your own In Bulgaria or Sevastopol but don’t be too quick to book a trip in Istanbul like we did.

We did mention to the excursion rep on board about the disappointing trip ,we were assured that the agent would be informed.

Would definitely do another Thompson cruise, the only down side was Thessaloniki airport on the return journey ,hope you are luckier than we were.

We left the ship at 2pm on reaching the airport we were in a queue the whole time until boarding the plane. Have a good lunch before you set off.

Like many I read the mixed reviews but we went determined to give it a go.

The cabin was fine for my wife, daughter, and myself. Not spacious but enough room for us and an excellent excuse to sit having a pre dinner drink on deck whilst my wife and daughter got ready.

We were on second sitting so the dining room staff were keen to clear away. Food was good, entertainment was precisely that. Good range of destinations. Staff extremely friendly and helpful.

All the guests were very happy except for one couple who got on board the first night and started videoing everything, calling the ship a barge and moaning to the friends via a mobile.

The one point I would like to make is that if you want Queen Mary 2 to New York, stay at a swish hotel and then fly back on Silverjet, pay the money and don’t go on the Calypso and complain.

Many of the cruise patrons had been on other ships but enjoyed this one. On our itinerary the cruise though the Corinth canal was an experience, The Calypso is the biggest ship that can get through so size isn’t everything. It appears that there will be a refit over winter to enhance its facilities.

There were people in late teens, early twenties who thoroughly enjoyed it. If you get a chance to go just do it and enjoy yourself.

Like many other people that have embarked on their first cruise we were a tad apprehensive after reading some of the negative comments on this board.

However we loved everything about the Calypso. The staff were simply superb; the entertainment worthy of the west end, my partner even won the bingo on the last day despite not playing all week. Sorry everyone! And I won at the casino on the same day, much to the casino managers disgust Tee Hee!

The food was superb especially in the restaurant and the service wonderful. The destinations were great especially Parga.

We had an outside superior plus on level 6, 601 to be precise. Wow what a cabin it has a side and Front window which made for superb view through the Corinth canal. We did have feedback that some cabins were too loud on lower levels due to engine noise but level 6 is unaffected.

The destinations were great (except Durres, but even that was an experience!)

Yes the ship is small but that is why it is so good, we met and dined with fantastic people and truly would have changed very little about this trip.

In summary if you want "the Ritz" give it a miss and be pretentious elsewhere, if you want to meet superb people and have an unforgettable time. Take a cruise on the Calypso.

Having read such negative reviews about experiences aboard the Calypso Cruise Ship, we left for our holiday somewhat full of dread.

I really feel people must be very hard to please to criticise so much about this wonderful little ship. It maybe was a little jaded in places (carpets etc) but it could reach the most wonderful destinations larger ships couldn't and the friendly, intimate atmosphere on board made being on a small ship very special.

Everybody, passengers and crew, were very friendly and helpful. The cabins were bigger than others I have experienced on board larger ships, although wardrobe space a little limited.

The food was wonderful in both the restaurant and buffet but one slight criticism I would have, is that we sometimes felt a little rushed at the late sitting in the restaurant - with waiters clearing tables the minute we finished eating.

The adult only ethos of the ship was a wonderful plus for people of our age, and we met many lovely, likeminded people.

Special mention must go to Frank and the entertainment team - what a talented bunch!! We were treated to truly marvellous shows every evening and even afternoon plays when the ship was at sea, which were well worth watching.

A most enjoyable week on board the Calypso and I can't wait to try another itinerary next year.

We followed the cruise with a week in Halkidiki at the Sani Beach Resort. A beautiful place, but not to be recommended if you enjoy the adult only aspect of a holiday, as it is very family orientated and couples on their own are very much in the minority.

Also the air conditioning in the restaurant and public areas, such as reception, not sufficient in the height of the summer. Food however was very good.

Our first cruise and it was excellent in every way. The boat is small and friendly and the crew are attentive and go out of their way to keep the passengers happy.

We did not meet any crew member who did not smile and say hello! Superb training!

The restaurant standard was very high and as a vegetarian I was a little concerned. However the meals were so varied well cooked and lots of choice. The buffet was equally as good and ideal for breakfast to watch the port activity or the spectacular views of Istanbul.

The standard inside cabin was fine and well prepared by our cabin girl. There was always a chocolate on the pillow and the towels arranged in artistic ways!

The ports of call were one of the reasons we booked this cruise and Sevastopol was particularly interesting. Maybe Thomsons should consider visiting Constansa as it is hardly the most spectacular Black Sea destination, may be Odessa or stay overnight in Istanbul?

Will definitely cruise this ship again.

This was our first cruise experience, and in fact came about as a result of losing our car in the UK flash floods!

We booked as last minute customers, with the intent of having a relaxing and stress free holiday. We happily left the UK weather behind us.

Our first impressions were ones of total satisfaction. Our cabin was at the front of the ship, and surprisingly spacious. It was both clean and appeared in good order.

We were totally satisfied with the standard of service from the staff on board this friendly ship.

An administrative problem, relating to our package details was dealt with very efficiently by reception staff.

The standard, choice, and availability of food more than met our expectations and satisfied our appetites more than adequately.

The itinerary was excellent. We enjoyed all destinations.

Entertainment was of exceptional quality, akin to that seen on The West End.

I am sad to report negative, but significant experiences, caused by the inability of this ship to remain stable when met with the challenging weather conditions of The Black Sea. It is a converted ferry, with flat bottom.

On one particular evening, where storms were graded 7 even the hardiest of cruiser and a proportion of the staff, succumbed to sea sickness. The late Entertainment for this evening was cancelled and the dining restaurant was only 1/3 occupied.

Our cabin (302) was completely inhabitable, due to the motion of the ship. We experienced being thrown around the cabin and calculated that there was significant risk of injury, if we remained in our cabin this evening.

We duly exercised some common sense and took up residence in one of the lounges, situated mid ship. This was the most stable place on this ship.

Reception staff recommended that we have an injection and go to our cabin. We had both managed our sickness with oral medication adequately and felt this approach was unnecessary.

There were, apparently, no other cabin options available for the night. We felt no other choice than to spend the night sleeping in the lounge (alongside other passengers) that were facing the same challenges as us. We were all situated in cabins at the front of this ship!

We quickly put this experience behind us and returned to cruising the next day.

I was disappointed by the ship this is not a cruise liner and should not be described as such in the Thomson's brochure. It was originally built as a car ferry in the mid 60's and I feel that many cruisers will be disappointed. We all wish Thomson well and are pleased to see them expanding most company's are expanding to bigger and better ships not downgrading.

We have sailed on all the Thomson ships many times but this particular ship is a huge let down.

The ship is very unstable and one evening I would say that approximately 80% of passengers were sea sick the restaurant was empty and even some staff and entertainment staff were ill and shows were cancelled. On another evening I decided to go back to the cabin and change my shoes to flatter ones because the ship was rocky again. The ship is flat bottomed and I think that this adds to the lack off stability.

There were problems with the air conditioning and the lower part of the restaurant was unbearably hot.

I found that the food in the buffet area was luke warm to cold.

This is the first cruise that I have been on where I have been hungry on several occasions.

Breakfast closes at 10am If you decide to have a lie on and miss breakfast the bistro opens again at 12pm.

The Bistro times really need to be extended for instance the midnight buffet opens at 11.45 and closes at 12.30 they had a guest comedian on one night and his show started at 12.00 and finished at 12.30 therefore you couldn't eat and all the food is wasted.

On the last day we had a pick up to the airport at 5.50pm so we thought that we would have some sandwiches at 4pm but we were told that there were no sandwiches available on that day and the next food available would be at 6pm my husband had to walk into the town to buy some chocolate and crisps to eat. It is ridiculous being hungry on a cruise ship.

The staff are great as always and cannot do enough for you the entertainment team are most talented and energetic. The plays and the shows the team put on were fabulous.

I did have a great cruise in spite of this very tired old ship. I would not sail on her again.

We enjoyed our cruise on the Calypso, mainly because of the ports of call, which were what attracted us to the cruise in the first place.

The ship was actually better than I had expected, size-wise, and our cabin 206 was really quite spacious. In fact a much better size than other passengers who were in superior plus cabins!

We were congratulating ourselves on our luck when the storm broke, a force 7/8 gale!

Suddenly our room sounded like a war zone and felt like a roller coaster! Being at the front of the ship we felt and saw every wave crashing over her and it was quite frightening at times.

The steward came to our cabin and bolted down the windows which made us wonder if they were expected to break! The majority of passengers and many of the crew were sea sick and shows etc had to be cancelled.

I felt particularly sorry for the pasta chef, who had to see the doctor for a sea sickness injection and then return to his cooking!

Being seasoned cruisers, and knowing that this situation is unusual, we have not been put off, however there were many others on their first cruise who vowed "never again!"

We were told that The Black Sea is unpredictable and has cross currents even in good weather, so I rather wonder why Thomson have decided to put a flat bottomed ex-ferry, which is obviously unstable, on such an itinery.

Generally The Calypso is a very friendly ship with an excellent crew. The shows were very good and the food was also good; although not the best we have experienced on Thomson ships.

My main criticism is that both restaurants serve exactly the same food, so there is very little choice. The meal times are also too late. Second sitting is at 9pm and the show starts at 11pm. Not very restful if you then have to get up early for a trip.

In conclusion: I would certainly cruise with Thomson again, but not on The Calypso.

Just a few comments to add to the many and varied reviews already here! I really could not fault the itinerary. Even when not in port there was so much to see- Istanbul by night was magical, Corinth Canal amazing, and the Cannakale Straits and many islands we passed close by.

There was a change to the ports of call; negative feedback about Durres Albania had caused them to look for an alternative, and they found a gem in Kotor, Montenegro. It is a beautiful fortified mediaeval town well worth exploring, and the sail away from there had everyone on deck exclaiming at the views- it is called the Mediterranean Fjord, and is really spectacular. For those disappointed at missing Albania, a trip was organised while in Corfu.

We had an outside (superior plus) cabin on deck 6 and found it clean, bright and spacious, with probably the best shower room we have had in 5 cruises. Not a huge amount of storage space, but we managed ok.

We had taken both round and flat pin adaptors and both worked in the sockets, and although other people mentioned having problems with their chargers ours were fine. The hairdryer really is rubbish though- I wish I had taken my own.

There were occasional problems with toilets, air con, casino licences etc that were a slight nuisance, though the staff worked flat out to solve these problems. Every one of them was unfailingly polite and cheerful- even the people on reception!

We had some very rough seas leaving Nessebar for the Ukraine. Only about 1 in 10 made it to dinner that night! Our cabin attendant was on her hands and knees in the corridor being sick and crying, and worrying about the passengers. All the staff said they had never known it so bad. Yes- it really moves around in a storm!! We were 4 hours late getting to Sevastopol, but trips were rearranged so that no-one missed out.

The excursions are well planned and varied- beach trips, sightseeing, wine tasting, train rides, transfer buses etc.

The ship has many deficiencies compared to big glossy superliners - but they can't go where the Calypso can. Thus my score of 9 is for the overall experience, which I would not have missed for the world!

We did the two week cruise Aegean Wonders/Ionian Treasures.

Our (inside) cabin was on the boat deck, right at the front, and although the sea was not choppy, we felt every motion of the ship.

This was mainly because of the position of our cabin and the shape of the hull. If you do cruise on the Calypso, have a lower deck cabin amidships. The most expensive are not always the best!

Although the facilities were as good as on a larger ship, it was hard to get away from the noise of the engines/generator/air conditioning.

The food was excellent. Restaurant times were 6.30pm and 8.30pm, one too early, the other too late for us. We went into the restaurant the first evening for the late sitting, but as the service was slow and it was very hot in there, we had our meals in the Bistro for the remainder of the cruise.

The food is exactly the same as in the restaurant but self-service. The only drawback was that it was never more than luke warm.

Although the ship was supposedly re-furbished at the end of 2006, (we heard it was formerly a ferry and forty years old) our cabin was a bit jaded. However, the cabin service was excellent and we were well looked after by our Cabin Steward, Sanchez.

The rest of the crew were very friendly and helpful too. Entertainment was excellent, although as we were cruising for two weeks, there was some repetition of shows the second week.

Drinks were no dearer than in the UK. We didn't go on all of the trips, they are very expensive. and at a lot of the places we berthed, you can get off the ship and do your own sight-seeing.

The train trip in Volos is great though, and the trip to Ephesus in Turkey quite amazing (don't get trapped into a visit to a carpet showroom at the end of the trip!!). Better, in our opinion than the Parthenon, which was very crowded.

Due to technical difficulties with the ship, we had to stay an extra day in Nauplion (a beautiful place - take your towels and walk round the cliffs to a small beach for a swim), but this was an advantage in some respects.

We had to miss out Tinos and Marmaris but got to spend a full day on Santorini instead of half a day. Now this is the most beautiful island.

We went on the excursion to Oia, and it is a stunning village with amazing views.

Despite the few drawbacks, we had a good trip and saw some amazing sights.

The best - Santorini, and don't miss the bridge lit up in the evening as the ship goes back through the Corinth Canal.
