The hotel setting and looks sell this...
5 / 10
Aug 2007, Mr R Smeaton

The hotel setting and looks sell this holiday. Costa Calma is very appealing, beautiful beach & streets lined with palm trees & large cactus plants. A great all round place...Well... if you've read all the reviews there is truth in them all.
Go with the open mind as we did, that there will be niggles as with most things. We found it is a busy, good fun place & definitely value for money. However, if you want class or are a compulsive holiday moaner then don't go to the Monica Beach.
On day 1 when the allocated room we were given was non-habitable due to damp mould growing on the ceiling and the stench of dampness from a leaking pipe. Something you don't want to experience after a delayed flight. (we had to buy blankets on the plane because it was cold while we sat for two hours waiting on a fault to be fixed & an interrogation on the plane)
I had to produce my travel docs to prove that I should have had a meal. When the meal eventually came it was not worth the effort and each of the 4 meals were returned. By the time we reached Monica Beach, we were tired, hungry & in no way ready for the state of the room they were trying to give to us.
When the room was not acceptable I called the main Air tours number, they were not at all helpful at the time I needed them to be. I was left to sort it out with the management & arrange a decent room. We were glad to get this room because at check in we stood behind at least 6 other people all complaining that their rooms were not ready. Someone had waited 4 hours and patience was about to give.
This room was in the main building close to all the entertainment round the main pool area & disco. Only gripe here is the same music played for a fortnight & there was no peace in the room to relax. Some nights we were woken at 1.30am with people jumping in the pool or banging around in the games room.
There was also a bucket in the corridor outside the door to catch another leaking pipe that was there for the entire holiday. Twice the other guests put the hotel towels down to soak up the wet in the corridor. We removed about 6 cockroaches from the room which was not bad considering we were in the main area on the ground floor.
Pool bars & restaurant - the bars always seamed to run out of supplies or have something wrong with the drinks dispensers. They also have some strange times for what snacks are available during the day. Even the main disco bar ran out of diet coke... or the machine was not working which was the case during most meal times in the restaurant. One breakfast the only thing to drink was goat’s milk. The restaurant air condition was broken for the whole two weeks & the plentiful ice cream was more like a milk shake. Generally the food was good & varied but with the AC not working there was flies everywhere.
We had a bad experience & probably would not go back or recommend anyone to go. Parts of the complex & the efforts of the entertainment & other staff combined with the excellent weather probably averted my worst ever holiday. Overall, most off the holiday was enjoyable & we did make an effort to make the most of the facilities.
If the hotel underwent a major refurbishment or even increased maintenance levels, I may consider going back at some time but at this time, sorry it was a major let down & not worthy of the 3* RS

After worrying about this holiday...
8 / 10
Jul 2007, Miss S Jones

After worrying about this holiday due to bad reviews, I was really nervous about going to the Monica Beach club. Me and my boyfriend wanted to go somewhere all inclusive, hot, and somewhere we could relax. At the Monica beach club we got all of this.
Breakfast was ok, English breakfast wasn’t up to standard, although fresh bread was available and cereals and fruit which are all you need really.
Lunch was fabulous; pastas, salads, fresh fish, and bread were all available and were lovely.
Dinner was great too, again fresh foods and quite a wide range for 3* accommodation
Remember this is 3* and if you want 5* then pay for it. For what the hotel was it was lovely. The weather was beautiful so was the beach and pool area. Rooms were 3* but clean, so were the linen and towels. Only thing is walls could do with a lick of paint...however anyone who moans too much about the walls is just there to criticize as a holiday is what you make it and rooms are for washing and sleeping!!
Air tours tour operator was fantastic. Pauline is friendly and never to busy to have a chat. She will help you out with anything and everything.
Yes there are rather allot of Germans but you just play them at there own game. (You will need to put towel out at 8am but once your there its fun to watch them get angry when the cant get a bed!!)
Entertainment was above 3* they had some amazing acts on and even the mini disco for the kids was good for adults. (Watch the men as they will love the performing parrots).
Overall our holiday was fantastic; I would definitely book to go to the Monica beach club again. Once again it is 3* and it’s a 5* 3*!!

Absolutely brilliant holiday! I went...

Jul 2007, Mr T Vandersteen

Absolutely brilliant holiday!
I went with my girlfriend for two weeks and had an absolute superb holiday. We were a little bit apprehensive when we read some of the reviews but in our opinions it was fantastic. The room was tidy and had an amazing view of the sea. The maids cleaned the room everyday and they were very professional.
The food was lovely; there was a massive variety however it didn't appeal to some people because of the amount of fish dishes. My girlfriend isn't one for fish but she had enough to choose from as there was chicken, pork, potatoes, (a large) salad bar, chips (every night if there is nothing else you liked), meatballs and many more.
For the people who complained about the amount of fish dishes all I have to say to them is why did they come to a Spanish (known for their love of fish) island (what else is around them!!).
The hotel was excellent with bubbly members of staff with excellent linguistic skills, being able to speak English, German, and Spanish and in addition Italian and French.
The animation team lead all activities that took place and in some instances could be accused of annoying sunbathers in trying to get them to join in with the activities however the activities were in blocks, which allowed people to relax for a lot of the day (10.30-13.00 then 15.00 - 18.00).
The entertainment at night was brilliant it was fortnightly and appealed to all ages with mini discos and acrobatic shows. The evening entertainment was approximately split by 50/50 in terms of shows created from the animation team and shows from outside the hotel.
Costa Calma itself was relatively quiet but it had all the amenities that are needed with a few supermarkets and clothes stores. In addition the obvious TAT stores!
Although we were all inclusive we did go out for dinner a few nights, El Jardin, a little open topped restaurant on the roundabout tucked nicely in a palm tree garden, where the food was fantastic, and so were the staff.
We went with a couple twice, approximately a week apart and the barman remembered our drinks even though they were all different!
We went on a few trips, with Thomas Cook they were all relatively good value for money, these were Baku (the water park), Oasis Park (zoo) and the Subcat, which was a submarine that took us 50m below sea level, it was good and worked out more expensive to do it without the tour operator, as was the case for all the trips we did so book any trips through your reps!
Overall the holiday was fantastic it would be hard to recommend it to one set of people as it appealed to all ages.

Our family has just returned after a...

Jun 2007, Mrs R Smith

Our family has just returned after a wonderful relaxing week.
Weather was fabulous although sun very strong and I would recommend the fair skinned or children to use factor 50+ and children to wear t-shirts in the afternoon. Because of the breeze you are not aware just how strong the sun is, and a lot of children including mine aged 15 and 12 got burned and they both take a tan.
Hotel was very clean and the staff always friendly and helpful. Food was great with plenty of choice both hot and cold and the hot plate was manned by a chef every lunch and dinner.
MEN must be aware there is a dress code for dinner and must wear long trousers or long shorts below the knee or you will be refused entry to the restaurant, and no vest t-shirts then either.
Both our rooms were very spacious and included a fridge which was ideal for storing bottled water.
The animation team were first class and are based in the hotel 14hrs each day. Programme starts at 1030am for both adults and children and in the evening the shows were very good, whether it be the animation team’s version of grease or an outside troupe.
Our children had plenty of freedom and we felt it safe for them to do their own thing within the hotel grounds.
If you love the beach you won’t be disappointed because its 2mins through the grounds from reception and the view is amazing.
Don’t go looking for lots of shops as you will be disappointed but there is a small shopping centre within 5 mins.

Just got back from Costa Coma sorry...
3 / 10
Jun 2007,  J Smith

Just got back from Costa Coma sorry Calma. Hotel average nice pool area if you can get a place round it.
Germans really do get up at the crack of dawn to put towels out. If you’re not there for 8.30 forget it and go on the beach, which is really nice you can walk for miles and feed the chipmunks on the cliffs by hand, they will come down to you to take food.
Back to the hotel then, food ranges from the good the bad and the downright ugly.
Breakfasts, stick to the cereals and toast as the bacon is almost all fat, Netto beans that are tasteless, tinned mushrooms and joke shop eggs.
Main meals some of the fish was ok, and desserts but other offerings were dire. Nice salads though.
Rooms were basic and come with free cockroach infestations, tip put plugs in bath, and sinks then just fight them in the bedroom.
Trips with reps were expensive 50 Euros for a 4 hour boat trip. The zoo is a good day out to book through the rep, but you have to get there on public transport only 1 euro buses every half hour.
Not much to do or see outside hotel in the evening and the hotel entertainment is that bad it’s good.
Bingo in three different languages takes forever, so that’s eyes down for the next three hours for one game, and I’m not joking mate.
Changing travellers cheques outside hotel is nigh on impossible, went to two banks in shopping centre of which there are three nearby, one said they didn’t change them, the other would only change them if they were in dollars, the rate that day was 142 Euros to the pound and the hotel were giving 135, taking a fiver commission on every hundred.
Rep said there was a shop in one of the centres that gave a better rate but that was a twenty minute walk away. She wasn't much use for anything apart from trying to get you to buy overpriced trips.
Hire a car and see the island, some lovely beaches especially the sand dunes at Corralejo.
I would go back to Fuerteventura but not Costa Calma, its ok if you’re nearly dead or dying.

Apr 2007, Mrs K Roberts

Me and my hubby went here for our honeymoon. The food was good and entertainment also.
It’s quiet and relaxing and there is two pools on site and the entertainment team keeps you entertained all day and night.
It could do with a bit of an update but was clean and friendly and I am going back here with my kids in 2008 after a disastrous trip to Benidorm.
Beach is lovely and there is a bar at the top of it and one round the pool, weather gorgeous, worth the money - Yes!
Germans some of them a bit rude but just ignore them and have, fun top class holiday.
There are also lots of places to visit and things to see, so well worth a visit.

Have just arrived home from this...

Mar 2007, Mrs J Lowden

Have just arrived home from this complex yesterday.
We spent an thoroughly relaxing week in brilliant sunshine and I am astonished when I have read the reviews.
Myself my husband and our 2 young children 5 and 8 really enjoyed our stay.
The all inclusive aspect of this holiday was well worth it, with good food and clean surroundings. Our room was basic but cleaned every day.
Yes the Germans were rude but can I say not as rude as the French and the reception staff are aloof but to be honest. Who wants to spend time chatting to them.
Entertainment at night was enjoyable but a little too much for the German market.
Beaches and pools are fab and bar staff brilliant.
If you want to enjoy a really relaxing tranquil holiday, you won’t be let down and our rep couldn't have been more helpful.

Just got back from our holiday...
8 / 10
Jan 2007, Mr D P Hemmings

Just got back from our holiday running from 20th Dec 2006 to 3rd Jan 2007 with the family, children aged 14 and 12 years.
Although the 8 out of 10 rating, it is more like 4 out of 10 for self catering, as there really isn't a wide choice of places to go to eat at. I would advise people who are thinking about booking a holiday here to pay the extra and go all inclusive.
We had similar problems with our room not having a kettle or all the required cutlery (knives missing), but we managed with what we did have, and the rooms were kept tidy with the 5 days a week maid service.
Costa Calma is a fairly small resort, with not too many shops about. So if you like to shop, look at the resorts like Costa Colleta (40 mins away) and Corallejo (1 hr 30 mins away).
We hired a car and spent about 4 days in Costa Colleta, which is a place with so much to do, I would recommend a visit. We had our Christmas Lunch here which just happened to be where the Thomas Cook reps were having their Christmas Party (so that must tell you something).
Although the Costa Calma resort is mainly German holidaymakers (Dutch and French do frequent), but we didn't find any of them rude, in fact on day 2 of our holiday there were ALL nationalities playing football, volleyball, archery etc... together.
During our stay here the children were hardly ever around, they made friends so quickly, with German and Dutch children, as well as English, and they were always in the swimming pools (one of which has slides), playing football or just hanging around the hotel receptions arcade machines with them.
Entertainment here was mainly very good, but there is the occasional bad show. The children loved the disco every night, again meeting up their friends...
The beaches down the south of the island are fantastic, and with the brilliant weather we had over the Christmas break, this really made our holiday.

We have just returned from this run...
3 / 10
Nov 2006, Mr R Dalrymple

We have just returned from this run down complex last week 15/11/06, and from the day we arrived we had problems. my wife who suffers from M.E [chronic fatigue syndrome] can’t get up hills very well had told our travel agent this and we wanted a room within easy reach of all amenities such as restaurant etc.
Where did we end up! Room 436 down the bottom of a very steep hill. I spoke to Dakmar hotel manager if it was possible to get another room as no way could my wife get up the hill for dinner tea etc, this was on the 2nd day after we arrived.
It was day five before we got room 62 which was invaded by cockroaches at night. By the way 436 was infested by ant’s so had to chase reception for a spray to solve this.
The decor in room 62 was very poor, paint/plaster coming off wall’s. I had to take meals down to my wife for four days till we got room 62 .
The night time entertainment was 1 hour after mini disco.
I was in the bar in the entertainment lounge one night and something caught my I looked down and a cockroach was crawling along the bar, apparently they like sugar and dark areas, this happened more than once and there were squashed cockroaches all over the sight.
Also there were a lot of cats around the site and in the morning they would drink from the main pool. Also one day a lady was pointing to something in the shallow end of the pool. The attendant came and she pointed down and held her nose, yes there was human faeces in the pool from kids with no trunks on I presume.
Germans were very rude and if you were at the bar first and then a German came up they would serve the German first.
No I don’t think will be going back to Costa Calma. Our travel rep told us the place was due for refurbishment. Best meal we had was coming home on the plane.

Oct 2006, Miss R Hughes

After reading comments on various review websites I was extremely nervous about going on this holiday. The reviews were absolutely rubbish though and this was one of the best holidays I have ever had!!!!
Yes there were cockroaches, but not in our room and when you have temperatures of 36 degrees everyday you are likely to get the odd bug or two.
Yes there were Germans, but they were fine. They did get up early to put out their towels but then again so did I!!!!!!!
The pool area was out of this world and the water shutes were great fun.
The mini disco for the kiddies was brilliant and so were the adult shows. It was a little hot in the cabaret room but it’s not too bad and you get used to it after a while.
I thought the food was lovely but I would have rather have had a little more choice. If you are a fish lover though you will not be disappointed!
There is a supermarket near by and a few shopping centres with lovely clothes, jewellery etc.
If you have kids and you want a relaxing holiday go to Monica Beach Hotel. We will definitely be going back.

Sep 2006, Mrs K Woodruff

Have just returned from 2 excellent weeks at the Monica Beach. Hotel was very good - we have been to several all inclusive hotels in the med and this was as good as many 4 and 5 stars we have visited.
Staff were excellent - extremely helpful and friendly, particularly reception.
Our room was huge, clean and although could have done with a lick of paint, it was perfectly adequate for our needs. Also nice to have a fridge to keep drinks cold.
Food in restaurant was extremely varied and catered for a range of tastes. Our children ate a wide variety of foods, and it was always well presented.
Three pools to try out - one with a slide which kept many of the kids entertained all day!
Bars were brilliant. Lovely to sit at the beach bar during the day and watch the world go by! Pool bar was busy, but always clean, and a good range of snacks available if you didn't want to go to the restaurant, lagoon bar was good during the evening if we didn't watch the entertainment.
Ignore comments about the huge number of Germans - this is a multi national hotel in its true sense.
The resort of Costa Calma is small, but had plenty to walk to and see, and the beaches are lovely - you could walk for miles!
Would I go again - probably not, but we have never returned to the same place twice!

Aug 2006, Mr N Kirk

We stayed at this hotel and would ignore most of the comments placed. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, (myself, my wife who was in a wheelchair and our 2 children aged 7 and 4).
The rooms were fine, basic but enough to meet our needs. The maids were absolutely fabulous, cleaning every day. The food was good and nourishing, if you want British food and British company - go to Blackpool!!!
There was a real mix of nationalities, British, French, German, Spanish, Dutch which was a really refreshing change to the last British lager lout holiday we had.
The Germans were very kind and made some good friends. Our 2 sons had German buddies for the 2 weeks we were there. The bar staff were brilliant Cici at the beach bar was fab!
The entertainment was ok, speaking in all languages and catering for all tastes, our children were kept entertained for the whole time, from mini disco to the cabaret shows.
If you want an all British holiday - forget it. If you want a cosmopolitan holiday, then go for it, you won't be disappointed!
