" great for couples "

i have just arrived back from the koala hotel with my boyfriend, we had a lovelly relaxing time. we arrived to a nice warm welcome from liz the owner. after reading the reviews on here i had prepared mysel for the worse, but wen we did actually arrive it wasnt half as bad as people had made out it to be the only complaint was the shower but apart from that everything was spotlessly clean. rooms were cleaned daily with fresh towels and the staff were always helpfull.
The food was edible but what more could you really ask for in a 3* hotel, and there's a fab food place a short walk down the road called the cauressel.
i wouldnt recommend kolymbia if you have young children as there isnt much to do, but if your just fancying a relaxing holiday then its fab. everywhere is with in a short bus journey away and a free bus to the beach a few times a day.

Advice: would reccomend it to couples who fancy a nice relaxing holiday

" fawlty towers "

we arrived after 11 long hours of travelling to be shunned to our rooms as quickly as possible to prevent disturbance to other guests, this would have seemed a genuine act of kindness if the hotel managers dog hadnt have been howling from possible dehydration.
after being told to hand over the 40 euros "now" for one weeks air conditioning we were told to hand over our passports and collect them later in the day.
myself, my husband and our 2 teenage sons were all put into one small room between us and told that the fourth bed (which we later find is a camp bed) would not be available until 11am the next morning which none of us could be bothered arguing about due to sleep deprivation, and had to make do with top and tail for our first sleep.
looking forward to breakfast, we went to the dining room to find toast, fruit salad, greek yoghurt, brioche, and two types of museli plus a coffee machine. first day this was great bar the warm milk for the cereal. but as the week went on and nothing changed it started to get tedious and we decided to skip breakfast.
from the end of breakfast at 10am you had to wait an hour in the stifling greek heat to get a drink.. even water! i found myself having to lie a few times to the young cleaner just to get a drink of water "to take my tablets"
at 11am soft drinks and beer were available (when the beer pump was actually working)but liquers and wine were not available until 5pm.
we found the poolside clean the week we were there but had been told by other guests that it had been murky and slimy prior to our arrival. somedays there were short, sharp blasts of sewage stenches. the pool was extremely deep and even the childrens pool was atleast to the top of my thigh.
lunchtimes were repetitive with bread rolls, tomato, cucumber, and lettuce. also the hot meals consisted of alot of pork dishes and no vegetarian choice.
the evening meal i found was a fraction of a bit better but nothing worth getting all dressed up for as many people like to do on holiday. the hot food at most times was salty for preservation and swimming in grease.
also, one night the soft drinks pump had broken and the beer pump was out of order, thus meaning straight liquers, and wine were all that were available for adults, and only water was available for the children. this happened around half 9 at night and was not resolved until the morning.
one of the only positive things i had to say about the hotel was the fact the managers husband george ran a minibus trip every couple of hours to the beach. however, at any one time there could have been 15-20 people on the 12 seater bus.
overall, i would rate this hotel 2 out of 10. as i felt the manager liz was unappropriately rude to guests as most of the time "it was not her problem" and her husband had a habit of just shrugging off peoples enquiries and problems.

Advice: dont feel the need to visit koala hotel

Activities: lindos beach is a must, and faliraki water park is good for a family outing (if the pool is dirty)

Good for: Beach

" HOTEL FROM HELL!!!!!!! "

Me and my partner have just returned from a 7 night stay at this hotel,we arrived at 6am on the saturday morning and was told we would have to pay 40 euros for air conditioning. At first we said no but we was rudely told by the owner 'Liz' that we would be moved from the room as a couple had 'requested' the airconditioning. The room we were going to be moved to had none at all so we took the room and decided it would be easier then moving..so obviously we were blackmailed. We went down to breakfast and was disgusted at the standard of food and choice in the restaurant which there was none at all there was fruit salad or toast not what u would expect from an all inclusive hotel! the food was disgusting at lunch and dinner time,im a vegetarian and there was only meat, fish and chips to eat or manky salad that looked 5 days old! ended up spending money on meals out in the resort even tho i was all inclusive.the pool bar didnt open until 11am so there was nowhere to get a drink from 9am-11am then drinks had to be paid for after 11pm! The staff were very rude and abrupt asked for a cup of coffee and was told no as i should no the rules. The room was filthy with grime, dust and dirt in the toilet and shower area, complained to rep about this and the next day ended up with dirty towels in the room.If you want a nice break please do not book to stay in this hotel it is DREADFUL..However resort of kolymbia was lovely, had a nice selection of bars and tavernas and a lovely peaceful beach would recommend the resort am definetely going back but in a different hotel.

Advice: Great resort with selection of nice bars and restaurants, not ideal for clubbers.

Activities: Restaurant 'Nikos was good, paul bar was superb and the beach was lovely and peaceful!

Good for: Beach

" brilliant two weeks at the Koala Hotel  "

Just spent another brilliant two weeks at the Koala Hotel in Kolymbia having returned following a holiday there in 2007.
Upon our arrival Liz, the hotel owner, was in reception with a warm welcome and our room keys, air conditioning and safety deposit box were all sorted.
Afternoon tea and cakes were being served which was welcome after our journey and we then spent the rest of the day by the spacious swimming pool.
The meals at the Koala were very enjoyable. Most meals offered a range of fish, pasta and a local dish with a vegetarian option and a choice of salad.
The rooms were kept neat and clean with maid service each day except Sunday.
We often took advantage of the free bus service to the beach which was run at various times during the day by co-owner George. Other destinations were also easy to access by the public bus stop which was just outside the hotel.
During our stay Liz & George were excellent hosts and the staff were very friendly and provided a high level of service.
Recommended for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Advice: nice resort & beaches

" Good Girly Holiday "

We arrived at Koala Hotel at 3:00am in the morning with my family, 9 girls all together!! :D
We were then told by George that we had to pay for the air con! Which was unbelievable as Olympic Holidays did not say we had to pay additional.
There were many negative things about the hotel such as:
-bed sheets were not changed once during the seven days we stayed
-very short staffed, in fact the hotel owners George and Liz were the only workers
-Liz would get very annoyed if we asked for water and she would state "I'm too busy to give you nine cups of water"
-there was a dirty poolside toilet which absolutely stank!!!!!!!!
-food was never covered, although there weren’t many flies
-the beach was far, but George will drive you down and pick you up at certain times, even if this means 15 people fit in there even though there was no seats... simply had to sit on the floor
-there was a scary cat at the hotel owned by George and Liz, who informed us we shouldn't touch the cat as it gets vicious
-the all inclusive was not actually true as the drinks would stop after 11pm, which means we would have to pay
-the swimming pool was very deep and not suitable for children. The children’s area had plenty of dead wasps!
-dreadful smell of sewers by the pool, although this was just occasionally
-last but not least, the hotel had hospital property! (spoon)
However, there were actually positive's as well!:
-the hotel was full of friendly people
-the food was nice, especially the soup and mash potato... must have!
-the one entertaining night we had, (Greek night on Sunday) was really fun. The hotel should do more of this
-there’s a load to do in Rhodes... Falaraki Water Park was AMAZING, the clubbing was even better! and there are loads of other great excursions.
It was overall a good girly holiday! We had plenty of fun, even if this meant winding Liz up about getting us water! Would go back to this hotel despite the negatives for a good break!

Advice: Rhodes was good! But maybe go to a different area of Rhodes. (Falaraki is where the party's at!)

Activities: Falaraki Waterpark and the bars in Kolymbia

" AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! terrible waste of money and time! "

My friend and I wanted a nice summer holiday, away in Greece. We got to Koala Hotel at around 5am in the morning, and Liz rudely "welcomed" us; she announced we could not save sun beds, or else she will take our reserved items away from us. At meal times we clean our own plates away, and when we want a drink we have to take our plastic cup back to the bar, if we do not agree, then we get banned from the bar.
The families had to check in first with young children- they were the ones who got the air con rooms at a charge and we were last. In August as you can imagine, Greece is scorching! We asked for an air con room and we were not allowed one! despite rooms being available, Liz claimed she didnt have the "man power" to tidy up after us.
After three days of trying to sleep in this disgusting tiny room with a cheap plastic fan at the side of us we both became ill due to the humidity and constant heat.
The bar does not open until 10am so we could not get a drink in this heat! the pool was not clean, so i did not go in it.
The breakfast every single morning was an absolute disgrace! a little plate of stale croissants, with a few slices of ham and cheese- this was it! NO butter in sight. I asked if there was any orange juice and even that was not available.
You were lucky to get a knife and fork on some days. It was a first come- first served basis. Lunch was diabolical- infact towards the end of our holiday we didnt even see what was available- we knew it would be crap. we ate out instead. THIS WAS NOT ALL INCLUSIVE- that we paid for.
Liz and George the owners of this hotel are a complete waste of space. We asked Liz on the second day for diet coke she claimed she only gave it to people with diabetes! i wanted to come home on the third day, unfortunately there were no flights!
Other families were hating it just as much as we were. Children were frightened of George- he would shout at them for no reason.
For example, one night the bar didnt open until 9pm one night, when it usually opens at 7pm- a lady asked what was going on and George started arguing with us all- threatening to ring the police and have us all thrown out!
I would never ever go to this hotel again! people had to pay for air con- by the way youre only allowed these rooms if you have babies.
The hotel is in the middle of no where- everywhere is closed down, the best thing about this hotel was the restaurant about a mile away down the road! they do good cocktails.
so many guests complained whilst we were there, Olympic set up an emergency meeting with us all- because it was that bad. Liz did nothing all day- the hotel was dirty, the food was bad and her attitude was terrible. There were 3 people running a hotel, this in my books is a recipe for disaster. where were the cleaners? we had the same bathroom towels for a week!! our beds were not made. JUST FILTH!
People who are thinking about booking this hotel, be very afraid!! believe the other negative feedback I guarantee that it is an absolute shambles!!
Butlins- eat your heart out!!

Advice: I found some comfort in the friends we met at the complaint meetings, they were very nice!

Activities: My favourite was a restaurant about two miles away from the hotel ! it was lovely there.

" Faulty Towers is a 4 star hotel compared to this "

We went to this hotel in August 2008 and have to say it was the worst experience of our lifes .We arrived and were greeted by Liz who greeted us and then told us about the hotel , we had to pay 40 euro for air conditioning but it is a must especially when you have a 4 year old child. We went upto the room and unpacked then went down to the pool , the pool was horrible it was murky and a stench of sewage came from either the pool or the pumps - several complaints were made to olympic then finally on sunday the hotel got its [--] into gear and decided to clean the pool (think the threat of closing the hotel by olympic got them to pick their fingers out)We did however decide to spend the whole holiday at the beachOur little boy was poorly from day two this was either the dinner at night on the wednesday or from the pool as this was the only two things we did on the wednesday.Throughout the holiday the food was horrendous always uncovered and always unedible - my little boy whilst is 4 is not fussy and he couldnt eat anything apart from ice cream and the occassional veg , we ended up going out all week we were there and getting him food so he could eat.The all inclusive is not really all inclusive as you are very much restricted - during the day you can have beer, wine and horrible soft drinks - the spirits only come in at 1700hrs .............. we are not drinkers but the occassional brandy and coke would be nice during the day but no the hotel decided to restrict its customers. The rooms were ok however the electrics were dodgy - see pictureBasically if you want a horrible holiday then chose this one - otherwise steer clear .... I have a complaint ongoing with Olympic and want at least half of my money back. All I will say is steer clear !!!!!!!

" This was exactly what we expected and... "

This was exactly what we expected and more the food was really nice and i quote 'the mash potato was better than my nans' and that is not an easy task i can tell you!! The moussaka is really nice aswell best i have ever tasted they put a lot of effort into their food and you can tell that from the quality. The pool was an excellent size and there was lots of sun beds to choose from. The staff are very helpful and Liz is a really nice lady who works far too hard! She was really helpful when we had problems with our trips. I would recommend that you look around for trips as the travel exchange prices are very costly and you can get into Rhodes from direct bus outside the hotel for 3 euros instead of paying 19 euros by travel exchange coach. I would strongly recommend visiting Lindos the beach there is beautiful and the town itself is a must see. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the beach and the bars are really nice and relaxing if you want to have a drink somewhere else and the prices are really fair.
I would take no notice of the comments above they do not reflect the standards of the hotel, the owners are very fair and it was excellent value for money, as stated before if you want 5 star quality pay 5 star prices. This was mine and my boyfirends first holiday together and it was really great would definately go there again.

" I hve just returned today from 7 days... "

I hve just returned today from 7 days in the Koala Hotel, I personnally would not give this hotel a 3 star rating, Arriving at the hitel tired and at 6am in the morning , we were greeted by lizzie to find that the air conditioning was not included , which was not stated on the olympic website or in their brochure.
The saftey deposit boxes are not in the rooms either they are located in the reception.
The breakfast buffest consisted of toast if you made it yourself in 1 yes just 1 two slice toaster, cold beans, cold scrambled eggs, boiled eggs cold meat and cheese, two choices of cereal, preserves consisted of cherry jam or marmalade, french toast and orange juice, tea and coffee which once u add milk is nearly cold.
The main meals were adequate and the meat dishes were very nice, rice and potatoes were good. If you like butter with your bread tho you will need to take some at breakfast as butter in not available with other meals, when I asked for some I felt I was asking for Gold.
The room was basic and it stated in the brochure and online that the rooms had a radio, they do but no one I spoke too had one that worked , the bath a disgrace as the sealant round it was pealing away and did not have a plug, the toilet seat left a lot to be desired, the mirror has rust along the bottom of it. Room was carpeted but had a tile missing under the carpet and you coulds see a definate dip in the floor.
The pool area is well kept the only drawback is the strong smell of sewage that when the welcome breeze blows is very overpowering and not very pleasant when you are trying to relax.
The pool is cold but very deep at 5ft 1 apart from on the steps i could not touch the bottom, it did have a seperate childrens pool.
The childrens play area has swings which didnt look very safe and a very unsteady looking metal yes metal slide, not a very good idea in the heat !!!!!
I really did not expect to have to clean my own plates after every meal and having paid all inclusive did not expect to be limited to 1 drink at a time and that was soft drinks. so when the bar closed at 11.15 you only had 1 drink then to last you till you went to bed.
I certainly will not be returning to the Koala as I do personally feel that it is a 2 star at the most.
If it had not been for the other guests I met that were wonderful the holiday would have been a holiday from hell.

" I visited Koala with my mom, on a... "

I visited Koala with my mom, on a girlie, relaxing holiday!
We arrived 7am, to greeted by Elizabeth, a breath of fresh air! Our room was spotless, towels and bedding changed daily. Lizzy was always on hand to help, she worked tirelesly and none stop!
There was a pool table and a table tennis table, the childrens play area was more than addequate. The pool was an excellent size and well kept.Open all day till 7pm, and after! There was more than enough beds to go round, there were 3 things lizzy would ask, dont reserve sun beds, tidy your plates away at meal times and enjoy your holiday!
The food was all traditional greek dishes, all very well presented in a hygenic environment. The Food may not be appreciated by everyone, but hey, you cant please everyone all of the time! We were more than happy with the level of service we recieved, and enjoyed the food.
We had a great time we met some wonderful people and made some great friends, I would reccomend Koala to those who appreciate traditional greek hospitality!
If you want 5 star all inclusive snack bar and nightly entertainment, and want to drink yourself stupid for more than 11 hours a day! pay the premium! but if you want a holiday thats value for money and recieve excellent customer service, go to KOALA!! Lizzy and george will go out of their way to accomodate your needs, we kept a room on up until 30 mins before we departed, 1.50 am, lovely people lovely place, We are going again next year!

" Just returned from a 2 week holiday... "

Just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Koala Hotel, Kolymbia.

We had a really enjoyable holiday, met some great people and had a relaxing 2 weeks.

However, we travelled with a 8 month old baby and no cot was available on arrival, as promised, we were told only one in hotel and someone was using it. We also discovered there was only one highchair in the hotel also, which meant we quite often had to feed my son in his pram. The condition of the highchair was a disgrace, taped together, no safety harness and filthy.

The rooms are basic as the brochure says, but also very clean. The bedding and towels changed every day apart from Sunday.

The food we found to be good, you could always have salad if you didn't like two or three main dishes available. A vegetarian dish was usually available also. Chips were on the menu usually every three or four days, so struggled a little with my 9 year old son. On finishing your meal however, you had to return your dishes and scrape off any leftovers into a bucket, which didn't go down well with alot of guests.

The pool area was lovely. The pool was reasonably clean at first but it gradually became dirtier and dirtier, until you couldn't see your legs!. After everyone complained the hotel went about cleaning it over a few days and by the end of the holiday we could see a design on the bottom of the pool no one knew was there!

The drink situation was not the best. Tea and coffee available at breakfast which ended at 10 o'clock then no drink available till the bar opened at 11 o'clock. Then spirits not available until 5pm and the bar closed at 11.15pm, not 12 o'clock as brochure suggested. If you tried to double up drinks you would be refused.

The entertainment was on a Sunday night when they put on greek dancing. Good night all the guests dragged up to dance. No other entertainment provided, despite indicating otherwise in the brochure.

We were lucky enough to get a room with air conditioning (cost 6 Euros a day). But only half hotel had air conditioned rooms, the remaining rooms had fans. However, usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays as people were leaving there were people waiting to move into air conditioned rooms. Which meant on arrival there was not much chance of getting one.

The owners Liz and George are nice people, she in particular was very good with the young children.

Kolymbia itself was nice, good for families and quiet, relaxing holidays. Pauls bar good for karaoke on a Tuesday night, good atmosphere. Paradise bar next door very nice and staff very friendly.

We personally found the holiday good value for money, a holiday is what you make it.

" My wife Jean and I along with our 12... "

My wife Jean and I along with our 12 year old son Joe have just returned from a week in the company of Liz and George at the Koala hotel.
We are frequent visiters to the island of Rhodes and have visited Kolymbia on two previous occations.
We arrived at the hotel at approx. 7.00AM with another family, that we met on the coach,to be greeted by a bubbly Greco/Australian lady named Lizzy who immediately had us all in fits of laughter. The tiredness we all felt melted away so we all went staight into breakfast (continental) before unpacking.
There are certain rules at the Koala hotel;
1. No reserving sunbeds with towels (offending items are removed by Liz)
2. Clear your own plates after meals
3. Enjoy yourself
As a Family these rules did not pose a problem but to some, and one Family in particular
these seemed to be unacceptable.Said Family made life hell for Liz and the Rep. Michelle.
If you expect 5 star treatment pay 5 star prices.
The food at the hotel was all Greek, prepared by Rocky Bilbao (real name unknown), and over the course of the week we could not find fault with any meal (Joe included)
The Bar was open for 13 hours a day and the Staff (Eddie and Nicki) were courteous and helpful at all times.
Last but not least George (Lizzys husband) was always around to drive the Minibus down to the beach (when he could get it started) and offer moral support to everyone.
George was more of a backroom Boy, and not as up front as Liz.
We would certainly make a return trip to the Koala and this seemed to be the general oppinion of the majority of other guests that we spoke to.
