My initial concern before leaving home was that I noted in the brochure it did not specify any kitchenette facilities, although I had asked for self catering. Lots of phone calls between myself & travel agent! Still unsure about this when we arrived. This was in place however, although the cooking utensils were very sparse - one pan - no frying pan - no spatula or wooden spoons - no sharp knives or bread board. And no corkscrew. Take your own! Only one drinking glass - had to use bathroom glasses. Not good! The room is very basic, but clean & adequate in self-catering with a very large patio - no complaints there. Must say the hotel was very pretty and close by to some local taverna's and beaches. It is very much up hill, and up steps all the way - so takes it out of you even more when you've spent a day on the beach. Location very limited without a car. I have no complaints about the management - most helpful at all times. If I were to go to Crete again I would choose somewhere more central and definitely with more to see & do other than sunbathing/being bored/lack of decent shops on hand.
Apart from the lack of cooking facilities, the main factor for me was that I'd chosen the wrong location.........

As previous reviewer states, this is an underated hotel. We have just returned from a 2 week stay and found it to be the best hotel/apartment/room we have stayed in on the Greek islands, for the price The self catering room we had was clean, large, good shower(suprisingly for Greece) and most importantly quiet at nightime. We had a problem with the air-con one night but were offered another room until it was repaired. We never ate at the hotel so cannot comment on the food. The pool is excellent and location is great with good parking. The main fault we had was the resort. A not very inspiring man made resort with no atmosphere. There are good tavernas...try the one on Evita beach. The owner looks like the Yorkshire ripper but more sociable... the food is good and cheap. The Nest is good at the harbour, although the waiter is a pain....thank you very mooorch(if you go you'll understand). The best one for excellent good value food is the one on the cliff with blue railings around, looking down on the beach. The shrimp sagenaki starter is to die for. Hotel/resort is good for visiting Rethymon and further afield to Chania.......Hope this helps!!

An under-rated accommodation according to brochures. Although Xidas Gardens has 50 rooms, it was never crowded, with a large, deep pool and small children's pool. It had a generous sun lounge area around the pool and excellent poolside bar, open all day - serving drinks and food.
Breakfast was plentiful and served on a pleasant terrace overlooking the pool area. Weekly barbecue nights on Friday are a must at a cost of 6 euros per person or included if half-board.
The hotel had a spacious reception/seating area, plenty of clean toilet facilities around eating and bar area and access to a small internet room. Rooms in the main building were small, simply furnished but comfortable and overlooked the pool area; whilst studios were generously sized with massive patio balconies.
The best thing was the atmosphere, this was a family run place, the owners were multi-lingual, helpful, always on site, creating a really relaxing environment for a quiet holiday. Good location for touring Crete.

We were looking for a quiet October holiday without shops and entertainment. Bali provided this with its five beaches and a number of good tavernas. The Bali Express (noddy train) meant that hill walking could be avoided at a small charge of two euros.
It is a small problem if you come by coach in that you have to walk the final 150 yards carrying or pulling your suitcases. However we think that co-operation between tour operators and management could easily lead to a courier service operated by hotel staff. In general we found the proprietors to be very friendly and efficient; likewise the staff.
Our self catering unit was modern and overlooked the countryside, but there were many views of the sea from other parts of the complex. One has to agree with Mrs Bishop's comments on the equipment provided, but management did supply an extra pot on request. Our unit was kept very clean on a daily basis; towels were changed four times and bed linen twice in a fortnight. It was great to be able to use the hotel facilities ie library, lounge, small gym, swimming pool and the restaurant. A 3 or 4 course evening meal for seven euros was exceptional value.
Bali is a great village for evening strolls to the harbour; to one of the beaches or just eyeing up the souvenir shops. There are no lack of mini markets and one good quality baker!
If you want a holiday in a small Cretan village away from July and August, Xidas Gardens, Bali is the place for you.
