Matterhorn Chalet Reviews

Super duper!

Jan 2012, John Smith

Just got back from a lovely trip to the Matterhorn Chalet in Meribel. Couldn't recommend this place enough, lovely little spot, great location, chalet hosts were top dog, just like having your own mum look after you for the week!!!! Hot tub was brilliant and as for the board games on site, you'll struggle for better anywhere else! Food was of a very high standard, something Mr Ramsey might even be proud to call his own. Overall a great stay and Ski Total treated and looked after us superbly from start to finish!!!!

Simply Magical!

I have just returned this week from a throughly enjoyable stay at Matterhorn. The view from the balonies was majestic and the location is great, also close to Spar so you can stock up on the essential stubbies for the hot tube.
We were a party of 14 (23 - 25 year olds) which is probably the perfect number as this allows everyone sufficient space to be seated round the dining room table.
Food & Wine was of a very high standard each and every night.
Ski total hosts (Luke & Mike) were very likeable chaps and had great skills in the kitchen. Impressed 2 guys can bake cakes that well. Simply devine!
Mini Bus to & from the slopes is handy as the local buses are slow and sweaty.
Randomly came away from the holiday with an improved general knowledge of all things British and biscuit brands.
The hot tube was clean and everyone left rash free.
No Complaints! Thank you for the kind hospitality

Great time, amazing food, brilliant chalet hosts

All 14 in our group had an amazing time in the matterhorn, the chalet was in a great location.
Everything ran smoothly with ski total, from tranfers to ski hire, even giving us lifts to and from the lifts.
The chalet was cozy and hosts really made an effort to make us feel at home. Although for a bigger group 16+ I could see it being a bit cramped
Luke & Mike (the host) cooked amazing meals for our group and made us all feel lik kings and queens of the Matterhorn.
Skiing, hot tub, sauna, great food, great service... Sad to leave

Fantastic

Booked with Ski Total.
14 people - 4 couples and 6 single men
The 2 chalet hosts provided a fantastic service. Everyday we were served with a 3 course dinner and canopes with unlimited red and white wine.
When we got back to the chalet after a days skiing, 2 large cakes were left out on the table and the daily breakfast was perfect for a full day on the slopes.
The hot tub was used everyday by all 14 guests and nobody got a rash of any sort.
Ski hire was very easy and was picked up on the last day from the chalet so we didn't have to go to the shop.
Plenty of room for all guests. In fact we had 2 spare rooms.
An all round great holiday!

Worst Ski Holiday Imaginable, with Ski Total (Esprit Ski) and Chalet Matterhorn, Meribel.

Myself and 8 friends were unlucky enough to book and stay with Ski Total over the New Year period 2010/11. Every single facet of the holiday was a disorganised, uncomfortable, mess. Having stayed in ski chalets before, we know that our expectations were not unreasonable.
Ski Total have been completely unrepentant regarding the performance of their staff, and we have received no satisfactory apology, or any offer of compensation for our horrible trip.
A list of just some of the issues at this chalet
Hot-Tub Hygiene Issues and Rashes:
- A large portion of those who used the hot tub in the first day (before the tub was subsequently cleaned) broke out with various types of rashes. Some with large painful boil-type sores all over the body – others with large areas of small bumps.
- Specifically, by my count, 5-7 people in the Chalet caught rashes from the hot-tub, mostly on the first day, in the first hour of usage by the Chalet group in the week.
- The doctor stated that the rashes were from the poor hygiene conditions in the spa.
General (complete disorganisation)
- snowboard and ski lessons had not been correctly booked, and so the first day was wasted. We were left to arrange our own instructor privately because no more official instructors were available
- our return flights had not been booked by the company. We spent around 30 minutes at check in having to convince the airline staff to put us manually into the system. At no point did any of the ski total staff try to help, despite being told of the problem at the time.
- Despite us providing prior notice that one of the party was vegetarian, this info had not been passed on to the chalet, so the first night there was no appropriate food available.
Chalet (too small, and low quality)
- The Matterhorn Chalet in Meribel in which we stayed, was not fit for the number of people that were staying there (14 adults, 2 children). I would say max occupancy should be 5 to 7 adults, for a comfortable stay (size-wise).
- Lounge seats only 5 people comfortably.
- Constantly dirty dishes
- The kitchen area was insufficient and in a state of disrepair.
- They advertise the Chalet as having a comfortable and attractive open-plan area; something that not even the Resort staff attempted to defend at the time. Specifically, one staff member told us explicitly that we were in the worst Ski Total chalet in Meribel, which clearly didn’t have sufficient space for 16.
Chalet Staff/Service (service seriously lacking)
- The chalet was understaffed. We were told that 2 staff had walked out the previous week, and only one replacement had been sourced, from a different role in Meribel. As a result, when we arrived 3 hours late, the Chalet was still not ready.
- Food was often served very late in the evening, with people sometimes heading to bed rather than wait for the later courses to be served. Generally not enough food available (e.g. one day there were 4 croissants for 15 people)
- No toilet paper in the house by half way through the week. Even when we requested it, we had to wait 24 hours to have it replaced. Had to go into other people’s rooms to borrow the last remaining sheets.
- First morning, had to wait outside for 30 mins for a transfer bus to show up (despite the fact that this would have meant we would have been late for lessons, had they been booked correctly). No-one from Ski Total seemed to be aware that there was no driver serving our side of town. Completely disorganised, no-one appeared to be in charge of Ski Total for the resort most of the time.
- Room servicing was basically non-existent. Had to clean out shower drain on arrival due to the amount of hair. Heard of other rooms having to do the same. Absolutely disgusting.

Very small and noisey chalet

Good Points: Location & Hot tub.
Bad Points: Where do I start. Chalet sleeps 16 but it should sleep about 10 people. The bedrooms are extremely small. The bathrooms are even smaller, you can't sit on the toilet without burning your arm on the radiator. Bed are smaller than standard singles. Very uncomfortable too. Struggled when we were both in the bedroom at the same time. Nightmare. VERY noisey, if you want an early night and people are sat in the lounge there is no door on the stairs to the noise travel upstairs. Paper walls too you can hear anything, we could here the next door room in the bathroom!!! In the lounge downstairs there is 2 sofas a 3 seater and a 2 seater, and 2 stools, where do the other 9 people sit??? No way near enough room for everyone to sit and chill after dinner or before dinner. We went with Total Ski. Paid £25 supplement for dairy free, no soya milk, no soya butter, potatoes were cooked in butter so no pots for me, salad with cheese so no salad with evening meal for me. On chalet hosts day off, I had dry bread and jam, couldn't have cereal as no soya milk. Hot tub is about the only good thing about this chalet. Very disappointed as this was a big family Christmas holiday!!

Meribel is a beautiful resort and the skiing fantastic. However, the same could not be said for Chalet Matterhorn and SkiTotal. Our chalet was advertised to be suitable for groups of up to 20.
There were 19 staying at the chalet in the week that we were there, and very nice group they were too!
However, the living accommodation was wholly inadequate for 19 people. There were comfortable chairs (sofas and armchairs) to seat just 6 people comfortably.
Our arrival at the chalet seemed to take our chalet hosts by complete surprise; strange considering we booked the flights, transfers and accommodation as a package well in advance.
The beds weren't made, their was no lunch prepared for us (contrary to what the rep had told us on the transfer bus) and little or no apology.
In the afternoon, on return from the slopes it was up to us to light the fire (including foraging around for kindling etc to get it going) and up to us to pick up snacks etc on the way back.
Afternoon tea was meant to be part of the package but this comprised of just a single loaf cake to serve 19 people.
The chalet hosts had poor standards of cleanliness - our rooms weren't even cleaned once. We were given just one towel per person and this didn't arrive until after dinner on the first night (we'd arrived at 11am but couldn't shower or make use of hot tub until late that evening).
No surprises - we've written to SkiTotal to complain about the holiday, and currently await a response from them.
