Perfect for People on tight budget!!
This hotel was awesome, It had everything you need...a bed, a bathroom, and its SAFE!!! I travel to NYC alot and i am always on a budget as I am student. The place isn't as upper class as the other hotels in NYC but isn't as bad as some of the HOTELS in NYC. this place is SAFE AFFORDABLE, AND DOWNTOWN!!!! U CAN'T GO WRONG!! students HEAD HERE@!!! mel Z
uncomfortable
My carpet and bathroom floor was constantly wet and the air conditioner would not blow cold air. We consulted the manager, and he said he would fix it. When we arrived back into our room after the day, we found the room even more heated than when we had left it. All the manager did was turn down the AC. The room across the hall, where we had some friends stay in, was always as cold as they wanted it to be and wasn't wet and stale. Their bathroom was even larger along with the room itself. It just depends which room you're 'lucky' enough... more
Excellent hotel and location
My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 6 nights and would reccomend it 100%. The room was small but clean, the bathroom was clean and big. There were clean towels daily as well as shampoo, shower hats and soap which was also refilled daily. Air conditioner worked very well and kept the room quite cool. Staff is quite helpful. Location was perfect and would recommend either rooms 524, 525, 526, 527. These are in the back of the hotel and offer additional quiet and require two keys for entry to the room. One more... more
only if you can't do better
This is an OK place. I paid the same rate to stay here as I did to stay at the Hotel 31, which was remodeled. This place is *not* remodeled! The decor is definitely vintage 1950s hospital. Very good location, close to Times Square and a few feet from the subway. It was clean and I didn't have to wait for the bathroom. OK, but not great.
Basic, reasonable, low-cost option
I've stayed at this hotel as a single woman and think it offers clean, safe, well-located, low cost accomodation. It is not the Ritz-be prepared for small, dingy rooms with threadbare carpets and drapes, minimal service. But you get what you pay for and this hotel offers great value, especially for a short stay where you don't anticipate spending a lot of time in your room.
Always Reliable
For over 12 years, I have relied on the Portland Square. Just down the street from the TCKTS booth, the location simply can't be beat. The rooms are small, but the price is well worth it. Across the street there is a restaurant open for breakfast, a late nite deli convenience shop, and a parking garage. You're never far from you're car. If I knew a better hotel in the heart of Manhattan that was equal to or less expensive than Portland, I would probably check it out. But after 12 years, I haven't found one.
Low Cost, but only adequate
My daughter and I came to New York on a budget and decided to stayat a hotel close to Times Square that was inexpensive since we were staying 6 nights. We wanted to put our money into the Broadway shows instead. I can say that the price was great and the location was perfect for us. It was suprisingly quiet in our room at night which made it easy to sleep. However, I would only call the room "adequate" at best. We stayed in the "super saver twin" room with 2 twin beds. They were only 4 inches apart in a very cramped room. There was... more
Pleasently Surprised!!
Having lived in NYC a few years ago, I was very much aware of most rooms (hotel and apartments) being small, so the size was no shock to me at all. As a matter of fact, I was very pleased. For those of you not familiar with that fact regarding NYC, the room will seem very small. Anyway, it was clean, staff was friendly and helpful, and the location is awesome. I will DEFINITELY be staying here again, and I recommend it to anyone going to NYC, who want a safe, clean place to stay in a great location, and not have to pay a fortune to do it.
Don't come anywhere near it!!
Here is the thing. It very hard to beat its location and its low prices. If 110 - 120 dollars is the very maximum you can pay then bear with it and don't complain....but if you can afford 20 more bucks per nigh, get the hell away from the Portland Square Mud Pitt. The rooms are very, very small, somewhat unclean, they smell bad, the windows do not work and the front desk staff is rude, mean and really does not care about you. They are all like that but specially beware of the black lady in the front desk! If you happen to have a problem,... more
