could've been a lot cleaner!!
My family & I have just returned from our holiday in Cala'n Bosch, (My husband & our 2 kids aged 17 & 13) we stayed at the Roc Lago Park, when we arrived we were allocated a 1 bedroom apartment, but only discovered this when we got to the room, as it was 2am in the morn we decided to leave it untill next day to speak to staff, when we did they were helpful and explained that our room had not been ready and we would move to it that afternoon, they offered us a days free meals in their resturant. Our new apaartment, when we got it, had a great view overlooking the marina, i would recommend a 2 bedroom apartment, as a 1 bedroom is VERY small. We soon discovered that our toilet was leaking and after a call to the reception some - one was sent to fix it, this went on for all of the 1st week as each time the "handy man" came to fix it, he couldnt see what was wrong, meanwhile, the bathroom floor was soaking! The apartments themselves are quite basic, but as long as you are just using them for sleeping, then they are ok. The hairdyer in the bathroom is a bit dodgy, as i burnt my hair while trying to dry it! Just be careful of them. The only mirror is in the bathroom, which proves to be a bit of a nuisance. The apartments are not cleaned to any great standard, this seems to be the normal through the whole complex. For the 2 weeks that we were there, not once did around the swimming pool area get brushed or moped, it was filthy, if you were walking from the pool back to your sunlounger, your feet would be really dirty. The swimming pool didnt get cleaned while we were there either. I asked for 2 wine glasses from the bar to take to the apartment, i had to wash them once i got to my room. At the end of our 1st week the people in the next apartment left, the next thing we knew was the painters arrived, painted the whole apartment, inside & out. New patio furniture arrived, pure white tables and chairs, ( ours were really old and dirty) the patio area was washed and swept. Ours . . .i dont think new what a brush was, never mind water! Next arrived new doors with gold handles, we thought by this stage that they must be revamping each apartment. . . how wrong were we. . . The managers friend arrived and was treated to room service and the full works. .. pity he hadnt seen the dirty nappies lying around edge of the pool! Cala'n Bosch, is a very small resort, which is very much child friendly, it is the ideal place to go with young kids. The resturants are good, we had some lovely meals, in the tex mex, the italian next door, the tapas bar is a must, we didnt know what to order and waitress put us on the right track. At night we didnt go back to the apartment for the entertainment as it was mainly for the young kids. we found a bar with big comfy seats right on the corner of the marina, the Valentin star, they had a group on every night, the waiter there really looked after us, we gave him or order on the 1st night and each night after that he remembered it, unfortunatly it was his night off on our last night. all in all, we had a great holiday, i would go back, but not to the roc lago park, unless they brought their standards up at least 75%.
Decent holiday
Basic accomodation. Small kitchen. Microwave, 2 rings. toaster - ask for a kettle. Take a can and wine opener. Air con good. They set it low. Squeeze a key in and alter the temperature to make it colder. Maid service every other day with loo roll and towells. Cleaning not up to much but you have a broom and mop in apartment to use. Not a great deal of cupboard space. 1 bed on 1st floor, 2 beds all groud floor. Pool area nice enough and snacks and drinks reasonable. Entertainment team bizarrely mime to tracks. Embarrassing to watch and best not to encourage them! Have a mini disco at 8.30 each night. Best restaurants we went to were Mr Jaune and Tropicana. Worst and dearest was Aquarium. No where was great to eat . They all charge the same. Approx 7 euros for pizza. All other meat with chips. Chicken about 7 and sirloin steak about 13. Best option is get a car and head to hypermarket on road near to Cuitadella as Top supermarket charges 6 euros for 2 chicken breasts and 3 euros for basmati rice. Still a good holiday at the price. Very nice location. If you drive out visit Cala Galdana as beautiful. Easy to drive on island and loads of resorts to visit.
Our holiday at the Roc Lago Park apartments
I have just returned from a week at the Roc Lago Park apartments in Menorca and I have to say that the overall experience was very good. We stayed in a 2 bedroomed apartment as we have a child of 9 and one of 16 and it was spacious and comfortable. The kitchen facilities are quite basic but we ate out every evening. Our favourite restaurant was the Pizzeria Bahia overlooking the marina. The staff there were very friendly and the food was excellent. The staff at Reception were very helpful. In fact when we arrived, they had allocated us an apartment overlooking the swimming pool as this is what they thought we wanted but we felt it was too noisy there so before we unpacked we went back and asked if there were any other apartments available and were given a choice of 3 others in a quieter part of the complex. We also asked about keeping on the apartment on the day we left and were allowed to do this until 2.30 pm (we were picked up at 3. to go to the airport) and they charged us 18 euros to do this which we were happy to pay as it gave us a chance to swim in the morning and get showered and changed before setting off home. Our only complaint would be that although the maid came in frequently to change the towels (3 times while we were there) and once to change the sheets (she came a second time but it was the day before we were due to leave so we sent her away as we felt this was unnecessary), there was no cleaning done during our stay. The bathroom could have done with a clean and the floors were not swept or mopped so we had to do this ourselves. However, none of this spoiled our holiday as we had a lovely time and came home feeling very relaxed. We would go back there without hesitation.
Great Location
We have just returned from Cala N Bosch. Our party consisted of 2 adults and 2 children under 4. We opted for a 2 bed apartment which was ideal from a space perspective and ground floor too... 2 beds are ground floor - ideal for buggies - 1 bed appear to be on 1st floor reachable only by steps.. accommodation is basic but fine but you get what you pay for. located ideally next to marina with all bars and restaurants nearby... excellent views from balcony complex is well laid out.. pool was great... occasional sewerage smells outside some apartments... bar basic... entertainment okay but left to 2 people to operate all week... food in hotel was pretty dire tried breakfast twice and disappointed - would recomment not booking half board in the UK thru' your agent - if you do decide to opt for half board you'll find it is much cheaper booking at hotel reception. Restaurants - ate out most of the time.. standard pretty good only one bad meal (steakhouse near to chaplins bar) ... overall a bit pricey though but this is also due to the strength of the £ For the kids Goody Goody amusement park was a big hit - went there every day Overall great location, accommodation as expected, but take more Euro's than you plan - everyone we spoke to spent more than they anticipated!
have been to better places
stayed here in june,,my apartment was ok smelt of cigrettes, had to go and get some air freshner, quite a few steps up to the apartment bit of a struggle with a buggy, entertainment was quite poor,2 entertainment staff doing all the entertainment. My mum stayed in apartment next to us, the bedroom had mould all over the walls ,if you opened the bedroom window you couldnt see anything only a fir tree you coulndnt even shut the shutter. We have been to calan bosch 5 times and this is the worst accomadation i have stayed in,paradise club or marina apartments are loads nicer.
Roc Lago Park apartments clean and absolutely fine.
Really clean apartments. Had a room overlooking Calan Bosch harbour and pool. Inside apartment was spotless and comfortable. Did not need the air conditioning in May but have an air conditioner in bedroom and lounge so i imagine in height of season it would be lovely and cold in the room to escape the heat. Helpful reception. Great place to stay for the price. Did not eat at hotel as eat in harbour all the time. Overall great place to stay for the price. Would go back again no problem.
Fantastic
Roc Lago apartments are small and basic but we found them fantastic everything we needed. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment with our 1 yr old and a 7 yr old. The only thing i would say about the 1 bed apts is that they are up one floor and have quite steep stairs. We had to fold the buggy down to get it upstairs. The apartments have a basic kitchen which is a little dated but having made food it had everything you would need to make a small meal/snack. It has hob, microwave, toaster, sink, teapot, all cuttlery, pots, pans etc. The living room had couch/pull out bed, chairs and dining furniture. The balcony also had table and chairs. They also have air con. They are clean and tidy, the maid service was every other day and sheets were changed mid week. Overall the apartments were fantastic. The pool was fine, it's not heated so sept/oct was a little cold. The entertainment wasnt really that good although it was late in the year and there was not many people there at all. Cala n Bosch itself is fantastic and after visting most other resorts on the island i would say it is the nicest, busiest, family friendly place, if that is what you are looking for. There are lots of restaurants to choose from, bars with entertainment, amusments for children. The best place for children was 'goody goody' it had crazy golf, electric cars, soft play, inflatables, trampolines, swimming pool and bar/restaurant. We also visited Aqua Rock the water park, it is small and expensive but if you go after 2.30 the price drops quite abit, again though it's not heated so you have to be brave! The beach is a 5 min walk down the road. If you are not hiring a car this is the place to be as it has everything in one place, although i would say there are some lovely beaches to visit elsewhere on the island. We had an absolutely fantasic holiday here and i would strongly reccomend Menorca and Roc Lago Park, i would definately go back. We had one bad experience, if you could call it that and that was a chinese restaurant. Be aware that all the chinese restaurants have set menus outside that are very cheap. We went to the one above the britannia pub. We you get inside these cheap menus are no where to be seen and although the food was nice it turned out to be the most expensive meal we had had instead of the end of holiday, running out of money, cheap meal we had hoped. Obviously this may not be the case with all the chinese restaurants but something to bare in mind.
Great Hotel
Lets be honest... with anything in life, you get what you pay for?! This isn't a 4* hotel, it doesn't want, nor need to be. It is a very clean, well maintained, modern and well located holiday base. Basic, but complete. If you are looking for a 4* experience, book elsewhere!! Our group of 4 consisted of my partner and I, a seven year old and a one year old. We ALL had a fantastic time. Such a great family resort, LOADS to do, day and night, and for the kids- Goody Goody is a MUST..... Acording to my son Lewis (7 yo) 'this is the best place in the world'! Entertainment in the hotel(out of seasonish) was a little poor, having said that they did try hard. Prices were reasonable, and although we never ate in the hotel this was ONLY because we ate out ever day for every meal. The overall quality of food on resort is top notch. HOWEVER beware of Chinese restaurant over English pub !!! The 'special menu' is only there to entice you in and is NO-WHERE to be found inside !! total bill came to 38€ with no alcohol, starters or deserts !!
Excellent
Booked to stay at Roc Lago Park having seen it during a previous visit a few years ago. I booked it though Hotelopia at a discounted rate but even the normal rate was very good. Location wise you cant really get much better unless you want to be right on the beach. Directly opposite the reception was the main shopping centre with two supermarkets, a few gift shops and some restaurants and car-hire/exchange bureau's. There are also cash machines available. The complex runs down the side of the Cala'n Bosch Marina with its ample restaurants and at the very end Goody, Goody play park for kids. Check-in was fast and the Receptionist was really friendly and came across polite and engaging unlike some I have met. We had a two-bedroomed apartment, I believe all the two bedroomed ones are ground floor. Ours did not really get much sun on its terrace, the layout of the complex is pleasant, feels a bit like a little village. One thing I did not like was the fact you can access the complex at two different points off the road by-passing reception meaning anyone could stroll through. If you have little kids it may not be ideal, especially in light of recent circumstances but then for us it was not really a problem. Two decent sized bedrooms with nice clean linen and the towels I remember commenting were not the coarse scratchy towels you come to expect. We had aircon and satellite TV free although it was just SKY news and CNBC. Due to humidity it could feel damp in bed of an evening but thats not the hotels fault and is a problem I have known for as many years as I have travelled to Menorca, regardless of where I stay. This can account for the musty smells you can get, its not down to bad housekeeping as you may think. The onsite pool is an ok size but we visited in October when it was quiet, in the Summer it could be crowded. There is a small terrace above the pool which is really quiet and relaxing for chilling out away from the crowds though. The Maids visited everyday and the room was always immaculate, they worked very hard and we recieved fresh towels at least twice during our stay. There is also an entertainments team onsite and alist of daily activities but due to the complex being quite empty I think a lot of these activities never ran. A fantastic beach is just a short 10-15 mins walk over the bridge from the complex and around the other side of the marina are more bars and restaurants. The food at the Britannia was foul though, the only real disappointment. Having extensive knowledge (previously living and working here) I went out and about in a hire car which is very straight forward for first timers. I found the season does not seem to last into October as is used to, a lot of other resorts were already ghost towns and by choosing Cala'n Bosch for this stay we luckily seemed to avoided being in such a place as it appeared to be the only still fully functional resort still working in October. Sad to see some complexes closed with for sale signs on them. As people become more independant tour operators dont seem to be buying huge chunks of rooms anymore more or less putting them out of business. So if you plan on going to Menorca in October I would definately only suggest Cala'n Bosch on the Island. I would also highly recommend the Roc Lago Park, its clean, tidy and affordable. It offers a great base from which to explore.
Roc Lago Park Menoraca - Must Do Better
After reading postings on this website about Roc Lago Park, I felt reasonably confident that the accommodation would be of a good standard - which generally it was. However in keeping with my other travel experiences, I found that the printed brochures from the travel agent and the official roc-hotels website distort the actual reality of the pool size and apartment by the use of clever perspectives and wide angle lenses etc. The complex itself and Cala'n Bosch generally were recommended to us by the travel agent as we were travelling with a disabled child. The Lago Park complex is central to all bars, restaurants and shops - indeed it is built on top of several bars and restaurants at the edge of the marina. The complex is built on different levels and its areas are accessible by ramps throughout. The apartments are in blocks with half of these on the ground floor and half on the first floor with access by a fairly steep set of stairs. I saw several guests struggling to lift prams up these and would try to ensure that an apartment on the ground is booked if small children are travelling. The apartment was two bedrooms, bathroom, living area with sofa bed and a small kitchen, which was adequately equipped for making snacks, etc. When we arrived the rooms smelt musty and obviously not been aired properly. This smell was found on the curtains, bed sheets and especially on the extra blankets provided. A call to reception at 9.45pm resulted in the quick despatch of the maid arriving and changing all the sheets on the beds - though the blankets and covers remained unchanged. We gathered up the blankets and left them on a pile on the floor and next day discussed problem with the rep who said she would sort this - sure enough when we returned that evening fresh blankets had been left on the bed. The complex has a reasonable sized swimming pool with the larger side having a depth of 2.0m max and the smaller side 0.5m – however no life guard was on duty at anytime on our stay. There are 2 pool tables as well as a covered bar area. The pool water is cold and never warms up during the day not even last thing in the evening - indeed it was my impression that the hotter the day the colder the water. One day it was 27 Celsius for most of the day yet at 6.00pm the water did not appear to be any warmer than in the morning. This did not seem to bother people as there were always some people in the pool, even during a thunderstorm (how stupid is that !!!) I have given Lago Garden a 2/5 rating for two main reasons. One, the advertised ‘mini-club’ for children was very disappointing during our stay. We had 3 children in our party age 9, 7 & 5 (who is disabled) and who always through themselves into the activities provided by the organisers of the club – but what did they get only drawing and colouring, in a hut to the rear of the complex, this was repeated every morning. No games by the pool, outside in the park, anywhere on the complex during the day. The two ladies who were in charge had a ‘don’t bother us’ attitude towards the children and would not let our girls into the hut - not even five minutes before their 11.00 am start even though the activities were supposed to start at 10.30am. When they decided to put on something for the children in the evening ‘surprise, surprise’ only a couple of people showed up and as a result this too was a disaster. The second reason was the poor standard of food. The breakfast we had only one morning was very greasy and the portions minimal. An evening buffet also started, but this was very unappetising and was not well supported by the guests - which tells its own story. If you are looking for somewhere central in Cala’n Bosch then this is the best place to be - just use it as a base to sleep and a place to have a swim if you can brave the water temperature. The highlights of our trip in Cala’n Bosch were the Glass Bottom Boat Ride at 17e for adults, 8e for children. The ‘Island Delights’ tour 40e for adults and the train ride around Cala’n Bosch – do this when you arrive to get a feel where everything is situated. We did the pedal-powered car ride around the town but this is much harder than it looks – the town appears flat but it isn’t when you are trying to pedal with a family of five. The water park near the complex looked good but we didn' t try this. For eating out the food is pretty much of the same standard with prices similar. Best restaurant for us was ‘La Marina’ - 3 courses for 12.95e and Gran Dragon Chinese, 3 courses for 11.95e. For pizza try El Pato and for breakfast try Legends which serves from 9.00am (useful if you are flying to home around 1.00pm) As Cala’n Bosch is situated around the marina it can be breezy at night so pack some long trousers and sleeved shirts, especially for kids. The northern part of the island around Fornells is warmer and less windy but more expensive and quieter. Cala’n Blanes appears to be cheap and trashy and is best avoided. We were told by a person who had stayed at Lago Park for the last 7 years that the standards have definitely fallen particularly with the mini club and that this is due to new owners taking over the business. I would therefore question the relevance of older reviews for Lago Park. Lago Park - must do better with food and mini-club otherwise it would definitely be a 3/5 and maybe even a 4/5.
