Just got back from a short weekend...

Just got back from a short weekend with my partner and dog. Altho we were initially dissapointed with the cabin (We were expecting a romantic log cabin getaway) we found we had an enjoyable break nether ther less. The cabins could do with updating altho I think this is in the process of being done. Stunning location, great for taking the dog for walks. You couldn't ask for better service the place is very well run and altho meals are served to deadlines (9am breaksfast and 7pm Dinner) it was a quick service, no waiting as you choose your evening meal from a selection list at breakfast and the food was enjoyable. Remember to take towels as these are not provided altho they were very helpful in lending us some as we forgot! I think we were young compared to the normal guests being in our 20's it was mainly OAP's or Families with Children tho most had dogs which I think is the deal breaker for this place. If the rates were lower I would definatly go back.

We had holidayed here during October...

We had holidayed here during October 2007 so knew what to expect although it was colder in April! Having said that we used less electricity this time even though our length of stay was the same.
The cabin was clean and the staff were helpful and friendly - particularly "Mrs Do-everything" who seems to run the place. Having been before, we were prepared for mattress discomfort and had brought our own duvet from home to lie on together with our own bed-cover to help against the cold - although there were plenty of spare blankets in the cabin.
The food was well-cooked and the choice was good. The waitresses and kitchen staff were all friendly and helpful.
We prefer the cabin-style accommodation (with the facilities of a hotel) as there is no chance of inconsiderate guests tramping along the corridor outside a hotel room in the early hours of the morning waking other guests with their noise.
Despite the cold we had a lovely holiday and only wish that we could afford to visit more often.
I would like to bring my dad but he has very limited mobility and get in and out of the cabin would have been a problem for him.

Excellent cabins & furniture very good. Older cabins being refurbished.
Meals good quality & choice excellent. Waitresses very courteous & pleasant
Cabin floor cleaned every day.
Families with children should realise there are no childrens' facilities except for seeing the donkeys
Thought some guests were trying to see too much, and travelling hugh distances in a day, to see other parts of Wales yet quite a lot to see locally if get local ordance survey maps. However Llanwertyd Wells is a very small village and little to see there
Cost of electricity seemed a little bit high /unit. Spent £10 and hardly used immersion heater in the 7 days

My break at Victoria Wells was a 50th birthday present from my much loved mum who sadly passed away just before my holiday so as you may imagine I was not looking forward to it greatly. I found our little cabin warm and cosy, and when I opened the curtain in the morning I had a lovely view of a mountain. The 2 resident donkeys were outside early saying "good morning" The lady in charge , who had no idea of my circumstances was so friendly and hard working. I found all the staff friendly and helpful and the service first class. I found the food excellent and service fast and friendly. Overall I had a truly wonderful holiday at a very difficult time. This is not a 5 star hotel but the cost reflects that and I believe some people are never satisfied. I will definitely return and I hope management read this and give that hard working lady in charge a good bonus which she richly deserves.

We booked a three-day midweek stay...

We booked a three-day midweek stay and were obliged to leave a day early. Our chief complaints were the quality of the meals (very holiday camp), the incredibly hard mattress (no sleep at all for two nights) and the very dirty windows. The plates were whisked away before our forks had been put down. The cabin itself was quite acceptable and the surroundings were beautiful. The staff seemed friendly, but when we complained before we left we received only a very defensive reply. The fact that no one else had complained did not, to us, seem justification.

My wife and spent the Easter weekend...

My wife and spent the Easter weekend 2007 and the full Christamas Break 2007 and would without hesitaion re-book for further breaks.
The staff from cleaners to waiters where excellent and courteous - the only down comment was the price of electricity we only used the immersion only when required but to keep the place warm bearing in mind both of the breaks was (Easter and Christmas) this averaged about £5:00 a day.
The accomadation was adequate for a Log Cabin and kept clean. The walks around and within the area are very good - one comment I would like to make is that one lady complained that the dinner had been thrown away because they was 1/2 hour late (I do no believe this satement) has the kithcen staff on our two vistits have been excellent and to remind all vistors that there is a local shop in that never closes?
Entertainment would be a great advantage in the evenings whilst enjoying a drink in the bar, even if we had to pay a premium it would make the holiday.

We stayed at Victoria Wells 27-29th December 2007.
We took extra blankets and clothes as we expected a cold log cabin. We were surprised as the cabin was very warm and it did not cost us much for the electricity approx £2 per day.
The food was excellent with a choice of options for the evenening meal and the meals were very filling.
We found all the staff at Victoria Wells very friendly and helpful at all times.
The weather was very bad (constant heavy rain) but we still had a good time and will return again so we can enjoy more of the area from a very good base.

Spent a lovely weekend at Victoria...

Spent a lovely weekend at Victoria Wells motel, we stayed in 1a and 1b which used to house the villages well. Very cold so left the heating on, £1 tokens available at any time from reception, we used approx £6-7 pounds worth during the weekend.
The cabins are basic nothing fancy but were clean and the bedding spotless. Breakfast was at 9 and dinner at 7. The food was lovely, 3 courses and did not have to wait long for each course even though the motel was full.
Would definitely go again and has easy access to tourist attractions and good walks.

My now husband actually booked...

Oct 2007, Mrs E Lee

My now husband actually booked Victoria Wells as a surprise for our honeymoon. I had no idea where we were going although the night before he read an extremely negative report about it worrying us both incredibly.
When we got there we arrived late although there was staff to meet us and show us how the electric meter, boiler and shower worked. Also to explain the situation regarding breakfast and dinner.
Our cabin was perfect. Although prone to a tiny bit of condensation and a fraction dated (which I personally think gave it a more endearing and homely quality), it was just what we expected for the price and the fact it was a cabin in the first place. When I was first arrived I was unsure if there would be a problem with insects, general maintenance etc as there often is in caravans but in the whole week we were there I didn't come across one spider nor any other issues. The one thing that struck me the most was how unbelievably clean it was. It was absolutely spotless and having spoken to another guest who watched an empty cabin being cleaned it is clear that a lot of work goes in to maintaining the cabins.
I've heard varied reports about the price of the electricity - mainly positive however. We spent a total of £7 on electricity all week which included 2 days where we spent most of our time in the cabin with the heating on. It appears to me that things such as having your boiler on constantly and long showers eat away at this, just as it does at home.
The meals were fantastic. Again, for the cost while the meals were no frills they were also 3 wholesome courses with a wide enough variety of options each night. The service was quick yet friendly and it was all done in a very organised manner. While there is only a half hour cusp for the meals this was no problem to us. It was made clear when meals would be served and they are obviously prepared with this in mind.
The only real problem we encountered was that they have currently lost their licence so are giving away 2 drinks a night after which you can't buy any more. Also the bar shuts at 9 this time of year. We got round this quite quickly though. There was a mentality among the guests to take a bottle of wine to dinner. It definitely meant we spent less though and who can complain entirely at 2 free drinks each?!
In a nut shell we found Victoria Wells a charming and beautiful place to stay. It is very original and in a really central location. If you're looking for either a relaxing or active holiday it's perfect and in our opinion caters for everyone.

My friend and I stayed at Victoria...

My friend and I stayed at Victoria wells this New Year (2006) On arriving we were shown to our cabin, as soon as the door was opened I could smell damp, and was very disappointed, the furnishings were very old and to be honest I have seen better at the local tip, however the cabin was clean. The water supply to the cabin was virtually non existent and trickled out of the taps, the shower also was not working correctly, the water was either scolding hot or freezing cold and after speaking with others it would seem all the cabins were the same.
Our bathroom floor was soaking wet and when we complained we were told it was condensation, this turned out to incorrect as we found out on New years eve when the pipe from the toilet cistern came off when my friend flushed it and emptied all over the bathroom floor, this happened twice in the mean time every time the toilet was flushed a small amount of water was coming out of the pipe and onto the floor (Hence damp smell and wet carpet!)
Any thing that was placed on the top shelf of the small fridge froze solid and the carpet had a ruck straight through the centre. On the Saturday we phoned to say we were going to be late getting back for dinner as we were a bit lost but were now not far away, when we got back at 8pm (dinner is 7pm - 7:30pm ) we asked for our dinner only to be told it had been thrown away and there was a Spar shop in the village if we wanted something to eat... New years day dinner my friend asked for a bread roll and was told she couldn't have one as she was not having soup and the lady on the table in front of use asked if she could have another serving of dessert and was told yes, next year if she came back ( Oliver Twist springs to mind!)
The food was mediocre, no fresh veg, all frozen and they were overcooked, however the full English breakfast was nice, and most of the waiting staff were friendly. One family had a drip on their heads from the roof in the restaurant and were told to move their table down a bit.. New years eve, evening there was a buffet laid on which was actually very nice, in fact it was the highlight of our break, but sadly then the entertainment turned up, a middle aged man and his guitar, he sang mostly Buddy Holly songs slowly and out of tune, they missed the midnight Happy New Year by about 10 mins and when told it was past midnight the reply was so what? We were putting £5 a day in the electric meter for heating & power.
The room I had did not have any electric sockets at all. Nothing was level everything slanted over to one side. If we had paid £70 or £80 for this maybe you could not expect much more but we had paid £235-00 each for 3 days a total of £470 + electric and what we got was a cross between Fawlty Towers and Carry on Camping. The whole thing was hard work and not the relaxing break we were expecting, needless to say we will not be going back again.

Management response from John Hodgson, Owner 11 Feb 2011

I would respectfully point out that since this comment was posted the cabins and other facilities have been fully renovated and the comments that have been made since 2009 when we finished the renovation work are a more accurate reflection of the cabins and facilities at Victoria Wells.
