Occidental El Embajador Hotel

I had stayed at this hotel many, many times in the late 90's and early 2000's. Although not the cheapest hotel it does offer better than average accomodation, particularly for the business traveler. I would recommend upgrading to the 5th or even 8th floors where the facilties such as complimentary breakfast served on your floor make for an easy start to the day. It has all the facilities a visitor on business would want, is centrally located and security is good.

My wife of 28 wonderful years is Dominican and we visit our family in Santo Domingo fairly often. Over the last 2 years we have stayed at the Embajador 8 times or so and have obviously had a good experience to have gone back so frequently. While the hotel has an interesting history and is right in the center of where we want to be in the Bella Vista neighborhood, what continues to bring us back are the people who work at the hotel. As frequent travelers, we were underwhelmed with the property. The rooms were very average (see pictures). They need updating. The restaurants did not serve very good food. The best part was the breakfast offered with the room (made to order omelets and buffet). The management was lack-luster and inconsistent with the way they treated their guests. However, there are 2 members of the front desk staff who were very hospitable and helpful.

My heart sank when I saw that this hotel was celebrating its 50th anniversary! However, it has obviously had numerous touch-ups over the year and my room on the exec floor was ok. I found the staff to be helpful when contacted about a problem, but rarely followed through. For instance, it took two and a half days to replace burnt out light bulbs, and a day to fix a non-functioning internet connection. The Embajador is significantly cheaper than the Jaragua and is a nice hotel for the price. Be sure to book a room on the side away from the birds. The birds flock to the trees in front of the hotel and it is very loud in the morning. Both restaurants in the hotel were very good and there are many other good restaurants within a short walking distance. However, I did not like that my room did not have a security bolt or peephole. Also, the water pressure was not good. Showering felt more like standing under a water hose.

My husband and I have stayed at many 4+ star hotels, but the service at the embajador was THE BEST. All of the employees professionally attend to every whim/need and are bilingual in spanish and english, but consistently responded positively to our feeble attempts at Spanish. In attempts not to be an "ugly american," try spanish first. The pool-wow! Make sure to have the gourmet breakfast buffet at the hotel. My husband, myself and our two children stayed at the Embajador in June of 2005. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel. The service was outstanding - prompt, polite, expedient service. Always greeted with a smile. The rooms were pleasant, the A/C worked perfectly, the beds were comfy. There is a nice pool outside for the days when getting to the beach is impossible. I stayed for five days and this is the best hotel, the most beautiful rooms and very clean! The service was amazing and the food was very good. I recommend this hotel for business or vacation, with families or alone. To see city atractions don't need to go too far. Very close to everything! Super exxxxxxxxcellent hotel, bottom line!!!

The Hotel was everything we expected and more. I was extremely pleased with the Executive Floor, and all the services offered. The staff and services they offer helped me in the great impression given at my business meeting. Once again thank you for the excellent service.
