Sunway Hotel Reviews

Dec 2006, Miss S Hallam

The Sunway Hotel in Penang's bustling Georgetown is centrally located - just five minute's walk from Komtar and surrounded by shops and a huge array of food outlets. Our Expedia booking was somehow lost, even though we had booked months in advance and had an online... more

Excellent value for money
This hotel is ideally located in Georgetown and there is an excellent car park in the hotel. Reception service is good and so is the breakfast with an excellent variety of food. Room is clean and so is the overall hotel. There are foodstalls nearby which you could enjoy lunch or dinner or if you would prefer, there are good restaurants in the vicinity. You can also walk to Komtar if you want to shop there. On the whole, it's a good hotel to stay if you are not planning to go to the beach.
Good location!
This hotel has a good location and especially convenient for travellers who wish to get around by bus as it is very near the KOMTAR bus terminal where you can hop on buses to places all over the island. The room was clean and typical standard of a 4-star hotel but it definitely can do with a little bit of renovation especially carpeting and tiling - the carpet in my room had some stains and the ceramic tiles of the bathtub was falling apart causing water to leak. Although housekeeping was a bit slow in responding to my request for extra towel, the bell service and waiter/waitress teams were excellent.
good location for food lover
stayed in this hotel and recommended this to my family and no one complain much though. this hotel is located in the middle of penang but at night, it was quite dark. the location is not that good, taxi cant be seen as what we can see outside of the hotels along gurney drive. if you have a gastronomical appetite, then it is a great place to be. jus a stone throw away, there is a lot of hawker stall which serves one of the best food around. as for the room, nothing special as this is a 3 star hotel but the hallway to the lift is quite 'creepy' at night. maybe i'm jus thinking too much, breakfast, nothing much choice to choose from.
Clean, friendly, good value
The location is not ideal for tourists (not by the beach and in town but not in Georgetown) but for the price, very friendly staff and spacious, clean rooms where everything worked (aircon to shower in marble bathroom) and nice small details like a fruit basket, toileteries, fluffy towels. Breakfast buffet is more a local fare but you can still get your eggs done how you like and if you are unhappy, 30 secs down the road are local hawker centres (with very good food). For the price, was very surprised - thoroughly enjoyed my stay (tip to tourists - rent a car/bike, taxis never use meters!!).
Good Value For Money
B,E.Banks Ormskirk England Stayed at the Sunway Hotel from 28th June - 10th July 2007. We arrived at the hotel before 10.00am but the staff quickly sorted out two rooms for us as we had been travelling for nearly 18 hrs and we were very tired. The hotel is situated about 250m from the Komtar complex so shopping was no problem for the ladies. This part of Georgetown isn't particularly pretty, but is very convenient for getting about. Late afternoon the street hawkers start their business and in a very short time all the pavement tables were occupied. The food is superb and ridiculously cheap. We did, however, find a superb restaurant just by the Umno building in Jalan Zainal Abidin, called the Da Ban Steamboat Restaurant. The Executive Chef is Peter Tan, and he explained what a ' steamboat ' was all about. We returned to this restaurant a couple of days later and he prepared for us an absolutely delicious Kari Ayam. Well worth a visit to The Da Ban. The staff at the Sunway were all very pleasant and helpful and little problems, like the kettle not working or the light going out in the bathroom, were fixed within 10 minutes of being reported. The main problem with the Sunway is that it is a ' transit ' hotel and has a very high and rapid turnover of guests, including lots of very young and noisy youngsters. !!!! We had the small pool at the rear of the Sunway virtually to ourselves as most people didn't stay long enough to be able to use it. (Notice to Management - Please replace those stupid plastic sun-lougers with something a bit more solid !!!) The Reception Desk area is a little bit austere and could do with a make-over, but all the staff had friendly smiles and were always willing to help. The Sunway Hotel Georgetown is excellent value for money. Would we stay there again ? Yes, provided that they kept us away from all those noisy kids !!!!
If you can afford a better hotel, do it.
While the hotel is located in Georgetown, it is on the edge of Georgetown. So it is not within walking distance to many of the sites. I find the lobby noisy. The buffet breakfast was not that impressive for people who are used to a western style breakfast. My room was bright, and the air conditioning was good, but I was given a hard time when I requested a bed spread. For this hotel, a bed spread is not a basic item; only the more expensive rooms get bed spreads which does not make sense to me. If you don't mind being right next to the hawker stands when you step out of the hotel, then it is fine.
Run Down Hotel
I can remember vividly the 2 nights I stayed at Berjaya Georgetown last year while I was on business trip. First, I wasn't that impressed with the front desk, being a 4 star hotel, it looked a bit shabby. Up in the room, the lights weren't working. Waited like 20 minutes for their electrician to fix it. The bathroom look unclean with smell. The towel hanger broke off from rusted screws (can you imagine that?). The bed was ok, if you don't think you're staying in a 4 star hotel. Vistana is much better in that area. I would personally give it a 2-3 star range.
An Average Hotel Worth Recommended
If you are looking for an average hotel i.e. reasonably price and in a good location - nearby shops, food, restaurants, transportation - Sunway Hotel Georgetown would be an ideal choice. Nothing fancy, but a good hotel for business travellers and for those who wish to be in the city. Try it, and there shall be no regrets.
a brilliant hotel
we stayed at the sunway for 8 days over xmas and we had a top time we we,r made so welcome from the bell hop to the top chef mr po, we had a room on the top floor which gave brill views over the bay and ferrys the room was so clean the only down side was the dodgy shower but that was soon fixed when reported the room was kept clean the beds we,r clean and changed every day the breakfast we had was excellent and there was plenty choices i was missing mashed potatoes and next thing they we,r on the menu and i only mentioned it in passing to mr po the chef,we stayed for the xmas ball and that was well worth the money unlimited food includeing all seafood the staff at this hotel we,r so freindly and no we didnt keep tipping they we,r rearly helpful the hotel was right near the komtar for shopping and taxis we,r easy to get and not far from koh loksi temple and sleeping buddah i would defo stay here again without any hesitation maggieomx
Not bad location
It used to be an excellent hotel. The bathroom wasn't that clean, there were soap stains on the wall. Simple breakfast available. Right outside the hotel, there are plenty of foodstalls available at night.
