We stayed at the Tropical Escape for...

Jul 2008, Mr L Andrew

We stayed at the Tropical Escape for 2 weeks when we arrived at a diffrent hotel as it looked nothing like the pictures on the holiday book provided by first choice, The hotel is in an excellent place i have to admit not to far from the beach, but the busy road with my younger children was terrible we came close to death with the yellow blurting out music horn pipping buses, no matter the time they was always out. the road never seemd to get quiet.
The Food in the main resturant was poor it seemd to be alot of fish and nothing for vegetarians or picky eaters, The breakfast poor choice somtimes cold. the milk was warm when it should be cold...we never ate lunch or tea in the hotel due to choice the holiday worked out very expensive to please my family at meal times.
I would not say the hotel was a 3 star i would say 1 or 2 thats been fair my air con in the room was not working. bed was damp, also in the holiday book it stated there was internet access i didnt expect 1 computer in some bar and have expect to pay £10 to use for 30mins this is discusting. the pool was ok. bar ok staff...well they was satisfactory,
The toilet in the room wouldnt flush, lock on the main room door wasnt workin.
overall this hotel was not good...
If this hotel was a kennel i wouldnt let my dogs stay here never mind my children and wouldnt recommend it to nobody!!!

Hotel was overall very good its not the Hilton but just a good 3star hotel, clean, good food, friendly staff and 1min away from a very good location on the beach, only complaint was FIRST CHOICE THEY WERE RUBBISH THEY ALMOST SPOILT OUR WEDDING BY NOT SENDING ANY DOCUMENTS OR INFO TO THE HOTEL OF OUR WEDDING REQUIREMENTS but the hotel rep (tanya) sorted it, plus there is NO FIRST CHOICE REP in the hotel just a local resot rep, i found this totally out of order by first choice.

I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy, they say it is a 3 star plus but it is only a 1 star. One room to eat all your meals, entertainment not on every night ,some staff ok but a few of the young ones were ignorant. Food absolutely rubbish, Monkey Bar was not opened - said it was getting done up but opened it for a wedding. Having been to the Dominican Republic 15 times a 1 star hotel there would outshine this one in Barbados and is far cheaper to go to.

I recently stayed at this hotel with my wife and child and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. We had NO problem crossing the road outside as the residents stopped their cars to let you cross. The beach is beautiful and the locals couldn't of been friendlier. We would highly recommend this hotel to friends and family, and we will definitely be returning. Very good time.

We stayed at the tropical escapes hotel , after reading some reviews we were not let down. The hotel is a small, but the rooms are immaculately clean. Beds changed daily along with towels. The staff were all helpful and friendly and the food was lovely.
Yes you had to cross a small busy main road to get to the beach but it was not a problem as the bajans stop to let you over. The beach was lovely plenty of sun loungers and parasols to go round. First choice have their own section where no one else can use.
Plenty of trips to do i would go back again for what we paid on a last minute hol., £750 each good value for money not worth the brochure price £1,500 each
Just go and enjoy.

May 2007, Mrs M Dawson

We have just returned from the Tropical Escape, St James. We read some of the poor reviews and read most of the good reviews. On arriving it seemed exactly what it was described, we had a ground floor facing the road just along from the restaurant.
Our bed was changed daily along with the towels and it was cleaned daily. We were provided with beach towels which you changed daily at the pool at 5pm, do not worry if you miss them, as the next morning go up to the housekeeper where she will change them.
The food was lovely something to suit all. If there was nothing you liked they would make something for you. I put 8llbs on in 2 weeks! There is a buffet 4 times and a la carte 3 times per week. You are allowed 1 free meal across the road at the Blue Monkey.
All the staff were helpful and polite especially Margaret in the restaurant. A smile and polite hello works wonders.
There were plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach and the beach lads are very helpful who work for first choice. Wednesdays get busy on the beach as the cruise liners come in and that’s where they bring the guests, but they are not allowed to use first choice beds etc.
You are allowed 75 Bajan dollars per room a week to spend on alcoholic drinks at the Blue Monkey. Soft drinks are free. There is even water provided on the beach free. Take a stroll about 10 mins along to sandy lane where the stars go you can use their beach.
There are plenty of trips to do but we opted for the trip to st Lucia which was £200 each but worth it and the helicopter flight. There is a nice one of the island as well.
We paid £750 each 4 weeks before departure from teletext which was a good price I would not have wanted to pay the brochure price.
We thoroughly enjoyed it just go knowing it is 3 star not 5 star and take no notice of the whingers. Fortunately there were not any when we were there it was a good friendly crowd. We would go back perhaps not yet as the world is a big place.
One more thing to get to the beach you have to cross a busy road but the Bajan's stop to let you over so it is not a problem. Go and enjoy.

Bad points first, some rooms face a busy road, so you must expect some noise from about 7 am. You have to cross this road to get to the beach, no problem as the drivers are very courteous and will stop for you.
The pool is small and not many loungers are available. Everything else is wonderful. The rooms are of a good size and are cleaned every day. The staff are friendly and helpful. The choice of food was a bit limited but I always found something to my taste, on Sundays they usually do a roast dinner. The drinks were plentiful and of a good quality, there is entertainment nearly every night.
You are allowed one meal /week @ the blue monkey restaurant across the road, the food is about the same quality as the hotel but it’s a nice change of scene. The beach opposite is excellent but can get busy when the cruise ships are in port, but just walk a hundred meters or so and you can find a quiet spot.
There’s an excellent bus service along the road outside the hotel and you can get all round the island by public transport. This is an excellent value holiday, you would literally pay 10 times as much in sandy lane hotel which is just round the headland, 5 minutes walk away.
We paid 745 pounds for 2 weeks all inclusive on teletext, it’s a bargain.

First choice were excellent, the flight was great. Don't bother to up grade, a waste of money, standard was great.
The hotel was friendly and clean, I would say its a down to earth hotel not posh with fancy frills etc. Food at times could do with attention, mainly the evening meal otherwise breakfast was great. Yes - birds do fly around the dining room but I did not find this a problem.
Staff were great. Night life is very low key, but that didn't bother me. The beach was just across the road and although busy at times I didn't find it a problem. Maybe if you had young children you might be concerned though the traffic do seem to let you cross the road quite promptly.
I would return to this hotel, I think its value for money but don't expect 5 star accommodation. The island is beautiful, but like anywhere there is poverty and run down areas.
The building work across the road had just began as we were staying at this hotel but I cant say it bothered us, but then again we had a room at the pool side.
The restaurant across the road was OK but nothing flash, it looked fancy but cant say I rated it that much.
If you want to relax on the beach and do some touring round of the island I would say the Tropical Escape is perfect for a base to stay.
We rented a car for a week and did our own touring which was fun, but I am told the buses are fun to use too. Its a quiet area and not a lot to see at hand, so I would recommend getting a car or bus to see the island.
All in all it was a great holiday, our first time to the Caribbean, to visit an island like Barbados I would say value for money.
