Amazed at the negative reviews!
I hesitate to write a review as my friend and I enjoyed the Kelebek Hotel so much we don't want a rush of people booking and thwarting our holiday plans! My friend and I booked a last-minute hoiday as my husband was away walking, and we liked it so much that we are returning this year with our husbands and another couple. Yes the rooms are fairly basic but they are cleaned daily, any minor problems were sorted out immediately - and it is a 2 star hotel. The view was magical and we spent so long over breakfast just looking at the harbour and the boats. Having read the reviews before we went, we decided to walk to the harbour and taxi back. However, we never took a taxi back as we enjoyed the (pretty steep) walk and felt perfectly safe. The brothers were great (mum and dad were away at a weddding for most of the time we were there) and we just loved the whole experience. We expect to have an even better time this year!
Perfect
Just returned from a week at the family run Kelebek hotel. The family are all helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We loved the simplness of the rooms. I would reccomend eating at the hotel, everyone tends to head straight into town to eat but the food here is wonderful. I cannot wait to go back.
Enjoyable stay at Kelebek Hotel
We really enjoyed our week at The Kelebek, which is a small Hotel, run very well by the family, who we found to be very friendly. Each evening before our night out and when we returned we had a drink around the bar and chatted with the other quests, sometimes until the early hours. We enjoyed some lunchtimes there and the Barbeque was very good and I think everyone attended, so we had an excellent evening and the food was also very good. We had been to Kalkan in June this year also and stayed at a much higher grade hotel with Tapestry. Needless to say the accommodation etc.,is much, much simpler at the Kelebek, nevertheless we were more than happy there, as it is very clean and our front facing room had wonderful views. The breakfast area is great and the views are even better from there. Unless you can tolerate hills you should not visit Kalkan, as the hills create the character and makes the views superb. We are in the 'senior age group', but hope to still visit Kalkan for many years, as it is our favourite place.
A little one sided
We stayed at this hotel the same time as reviewer Emily 4124, and whilst it is not up with Exclusive Escapes type hotels it does not pretend to be. It is a small family run hotel with amazing views from the roof terrace that provides a more than adequate typical Turkish breakfast. The rooms are definately on the basic side but are spotless and the en-suites are modern and there is air-con. We had a front facing room with wonderful views. The pool bar is as frienly as you want it to be. The two brothers are always on hand to chat and speak excellent English. Yes it is on a hill.Kalkan is a hill. The family in question made very little effort to integrate, which is entirely their right, but to question the friendliness when they spent all day and every night at an adjacent hotel did not really give them the opportunity to socialise with fellow guests or the staff. The BBQ night had copious amounts of food,it is for the guests to create the right mood by dancing and joining in,the staff can only do so much. If we return to Kalkan, which we will, and are looking for something in this price range I would have no hesitation about returning to the Kelebek.
not the best
I have a few problems with this hotel. When i arrived at hotel with a small baby we were given a forth floor room which was awful to do when we also had a disabled person with us and then we were givena tiny room for three adults and a cot. Nextly the hill to the hotel was so steep it took us ten minutes to crawl up it to get home from the shop. Next the barbacue nighht we paid for was not very good at all food ok dancing afterwards terrible. The only thing i could say was nice about the hotel was the food in the restaurant was wonderful the baby loved it and the view from the rooftop restaurant was wonderful. I would not return there and the staff were not all that friendly to us.
Just Perfect !
Just returned from spending a relaxing week at the Kelebek (Butterfly) Hotel and wish it could have been longer. Extremely good value hotel with stunning views of the harbour and tiny islands from the roof terrace. Food is excellent with a good variety of choice and all is fresh and home-cooked. The double rooms are adequate size with good sized wardrobe and storage space - very clean and comfortable with mosquito barriers at window, air-conditioning and balcony. There is a good pool area with sunbeds, parasols, and a small friendly bar. The family and staff are wonderful - very welcoming and extremely helpful at all times. I would certainly recommend the Kelebek to anyone wishing to spend their holiday in a "quieter", but friendly, low-key resort with lots of atmosphere. Kalkan is just beautiful and full of character - old traditional buildings on narrow winding lanes (+ some of the more traditional turkish shops) going down to the pretty harbour. There is a colourful market very near-by one day a week. Kalkan has a small beach near the harbour but is also within easy reach of a nine-mile long sandy beach, many superb archaeological sites, and much more. Most can easily be reached by using the local bus or taxi. Trips by bus and boat are on offer to those places further afield. There are many other restaurants to suit every taste but to anyone with a taste for jazz and standards - visit the "Paprika" Restaurant down the hill which has live jazz every Tuesday and Friday evenings. There is a fantastic girl singer and guitarist duo who are really too good to miss.
The best holiday ever
This year was our second visit to the Kelebek Hotel and it was as good as ever. the family that own and run the hotel are very friendly and cannot do enough for you. The view whilst having your breakfast on the roof top terrace is spectacular. The rooms are a good size, clean and with plenty of storage and of course air conditioning. The hotel is small 20 rooms in all so everyone tends to get to know each other by the end of the holiday and by sitting round the bar at the pool edge at the end of the evening.Faiks weekly roof top barbecue is always fun and the food excellant. We love our holidays here and look forward to next years!
A Room with a View
We've just returned from our first stay in Kalkan and couldn't have picked a better hotel to stay at. The view from our balcony across the bay was tremendous but the view from the roof terrace was magical. We could watch the boats and gulets leaving the harbour. The room itself was an adequate size with plenty of storage space, aircon included in our price. And a double bed (most times it just twins). Plenty of hot water. The pool area was clean with good quality sunbeds. Food was excellent and freshly prepared if we couldn't be bothered to go down to the town. And the BBQ party was just excellent, although Faik, the owner, nearly burned the roof down. Yes the area is hilly, but taxis are quite cheap. And I can't think of a lovelier place to exercise those legs.
poor location bad hotel
Very basic and the only hotel in ten years travelling turkey I have found disappointing. Extremely basic even as far as turkish people are concerned and the staff are not particularly friendly. Also location is 10 minutes walk from marina, there are better hotels closer to town as just as cheap, don't waste your money.
Kelebek
This is a small hotel, but the family do their utmost to ensure you have a wonderful holiday. Views from the roof terrace, (where breakfast is served) are breath-taking. It is an uphill walk from town, but taxi's are cheap, about a pound, so we took the easy way out...walk down taxi back! The pool is representative of the size of the hotel, all rooms (I think) have a sea view. This is not for those who want noisy music all day or lots of entertainment. For those of us who love the Turkish markets, there is a small one right outside, weekly. Dolmus station is about 5minute walk, with Kas 25mins and Fethiye about an hour. Don't remember seeing any cash-point machines in the town but we went about 2002. Really recommend Kalkan and the Kelebek, but if you liked Marmaris you may find this a bit slow and quiet.
