Excellent beginer ski holiday with my son, can't wait to go back. The hotel was very clean warm and welcoming and quiet, friendly staff, varied food menu each night, however set meal on the first night was unexpected and if you did not like it there was no other option,... more

This is a very beautiful place when the sun shines, but it is dour when wet and misty. There is only one road into St Wolfgang so you have to go all the way round by bus from St Gilgan and Strobl or better still get the boat. There is a fantastic church in the middle and... more

Lovely location, superb food
We have just returned from an 11 day stay at the Forsterhof and would definitely recommend this hotel. We had a room at side of the hotel with balcony which was quiet and from which we could see the mountains to the side. To the other side is a stream which some people might not like, i.e. the sound of running water! The staff are excellent, nothing is too much trouble and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The food is so good with lots of choices, homemade Tiramasu is delicious! Everywhere is very clean and maintained to a high standard. Lake garden has a lovely view, although water can be cold, but probably warmer by August. So much to do in this area, Salzburg was a fantastic day out and the Mozart Concert brilliant. Cog Railway etc. In all a lovely spot, peaceful, bands play in the town sq twice a week, trips across lake with stunning scenery all around. We will go back again and stay in the Forsterhof as feel you would be hard pressed to beat the quality, although want to see more of the rest of Austria. I would recommend this hotel for couples and families with small children, not a great deal to amuse teenagers I don't think.
Superb: 11 out of 10
I returned yesterday from a week's skiing, based at the Forsterhof. It is a really superb hotel and exceeded all my expectations. The staff are exceptional: friendly, welcoming and good-humoured, and the kitchen staff bent over backwards to cater for vegetarian guests. The food is excellent and so is the local wine, although the red is not for lightweights! The owner, Manfred, and his wife were charming and always made time for a chat. My room was comfortable and clean and newly decorated. There are two local ski resorts. Postalm is 35 minutes away and is better for beginners and lower intermediates. When I was there, only one 5km. cross-country ski trail was open, because of lack of snow, but it was well groomed and varied: meadows, woods, streams and plenty of up and downhill slopes. Gosau is one hour away, and is mainly for upper-intermediate and more advanced. The cross-country trails were closed. Facilities there are limited and you need to take an annoying number of lifts to get to a good downhill run. The journey by ski bus to both Postalm and Gosau is picturesque , but becomes time-consuming as the week goes on. The local bus service is good and it's easy to get to Salzburg. A good day trip is Strobl and St. Gilgen on the lake: walk round the quaint houses and stop for coffee and cake (again!) and then return to St Wolfgang by boat. Hiking and cycling in the area looks good. Many thanks to the staff at the Forsterhof for an outstanding holiday. Pete, York, UK
Great Hotel, lovely staff
We've just literally come back from a week at the Forsterhof and can definitely recommend it. The hotel itself is lovely, rooms are spacious and kept very clean - cleaning staff going in twice a day. Very homely in that it felt very comfortable just lounging around in the various areas that had sofas. Pool table was great for the kids, as was the specially designed childrens room with loads of different toys. Food was out of this world, lots of variety and plentiful - we've all definitely put on weight! Staff are very very helpful and friendly, always on hand to help in anyway. About 10 minutes stroll from the centre of town which is lovely, especially at this time of year with the Christmas markets on. Obviously though things are very quiet over Christmas Eve through to Boxing day with not much open, but luckily there is a bus that collects outside the hotel and goes up to Postalm daily where you can ski, sledge, eat that sort of thing, costs about 8€ for adults. Recommended are the sleigh rides and a trip into Bad Ischl to go on the cable car and ice skating. Bus is available 5 minutes walk from the hotel by the lake. Would definitely stay there again if I were going back to the same area!
Wonderful place
This hotel is lovely! Really traditional and well appointed. Looks to be recently modernised. Bathroom and bedroom fittings were first class and spotlessly clean. All the staff are really frendly and attentive. The meals are wonderful too, evening meal always a huge choice, whoever wrote before that it was packet food, it's clearly changed since then. Huge salad range different every day and lots of roast meats / pasta / lasagna (gorgeous) / veggies etc. Breakfasts were good too but could do with a little more variation of the hot stuff as this was the same everday, still very good thou. Afternoon cake.....if your ever hungry enough after all that is lovely too. I challenge anyone to try nd avoid putting weight on the food is that good! Resort itself is great but some bar prices can be a bit steep, we presumed it would be more expensive in the center of town...not so actually the reverse! Loads of lovely walks and you have to take a little electric boat out to fully appreciate the beauty of this lake. Stunning, would definatley go back.....however there are so many nice little eateries in the town would probably go self catering next time to try them out more.
Reasonable value hotel
This was our second stay at the Forsterhof in two years and I have to say I was a little disappointed this time around. Still no tea and coffee making facilities and with coffee for two coming in at £3.50 a time you can't afford to indulge in this little luxury too often. Food was ok in the evenings but not marvellous. We ate at another hotel several lunchtimes where the food was cheap and excellent in comparison. Breakfasts were great with plenty of variety. I agree with the previous reviewers that Manfred's attitude is awful. He never smiles at the guests, only his Austrian buddies for whom nothing is too much trouble. He was downright rude to me. Our bed, despite being allegedly in a superior room, was actually quite uncomfortable. The mattress was not very thick and the base just wooden slats. The satellite tv still does not offer anything other than CNN for english speaking residents so it really didn't ought to be marketed as having satellite tv! Aside from Manfred, all of the staff were excellent at all times, cheerful and helpful and always immaculately turned out. I don't think we will return to St Wolfgang again and I have to say if we do we would consider another hotel next time.
st wolfgang fosterhof hotel
st wolfgang austria a lovely resort very clean. The lake and mountains are breathtaking, some really great walking can be done in the area the views are fantastic. the hotel fosterhof just outside the town, about a 10min walk downhill. take care at night as it is very dark going back to the hotel as in next to no street lights. the hotel is very clean and tidy all staff are extremely friendly with the exception of the owner manfred. the rooms do not have tea and coffee facilaties and no english channels on the t.v. meals breakfast good choice of morning rolls and bread hot eggs and bacon also cheese and cold meats and fruit. dinner is very much made up of frozen food and packet food very very poor dinners and very repetative over the week.
snow wonder
We have recently returned from a skiing trip to St.wolfgang in Austria...We stayed at the Hotel Forsterhof....It was absolutely wonderful....The rooms were clean and fresh and beautifully maintained....All the meals were excellent ...my attempts to stick to my diet were suspended for my stay there...The staff were friendly and helpful......we were sorry to leave when the time came.....no-one would have been sorry to be snowed in and have had to stay longer ....I would love to return there and see the other seasons of the year.....We would recommend the hotel to anyone
Forsterhof
Date Comments Noel White Date of holiday: Jan 05 St Wolfgang is not the place to go if you require good night life as there just isnt any. This resort is best left to beginers and families. I stayed at the Forsterhof, which is a lovely hotel, apart from the owner Manfred who is as much fun as a boil on your bum, however the remainder of the staff are lovely and the poeple in Austria are really friendly. The hotels dont cater very well for english as there are no tea facilities in the room and every time you want a drink you are paying for it, no complimentaries. Also they state that they have satelite TV, this is all German channels. The other thing to think about is that the brochure states that the bus takes 35 mins to transport you to Postalm ski slopes, when it snows that will be an hour, this is not too bad as the veiws are spectacular. If you are a begginer or family and are not too concerened with nightlife go for it. Gosau is another resort with more runs than postalm and this is also great sking, however a further 25 minutes in the coach. I give the resort 8/10 ski school 10/10 and the views 10/10. If I were staying again which I probably would I would choose to stay at the following hotels. Zimmerbrau, The White Horse Inn ( the best). Please dont let this put you off going, just bare in mind that once the skiing is done, you will need to make your own entertainment.
