This hotel located on Bamburi beach is small and very friendly. We were fortunate to be allocated rooms closest to the beach where the view of the ocean was fantastic, however all rooms do have a sea view. The rooms are spacious with a double and single bed. The shower is enormous. The rooms have TV and a mini bar (prices the same as the bars in the hotel, not extra as expected!).
Air conditioning and mossie nets are also provided. The rooms also have safes. All of these facilities are provided free of charge.
The pool and surrounding area is attractive. Loungers and towels are again provided free of charge.
The food is quite basic but extremely tasty. Every evening the soup never failed to impress.
We booked a 2 day safari with Ishmal, one of the beach "boys". We have done this before and have always had a thoroughly great experience. Chico and Harrison who work on the "patch" outside Plaza can be thoroughly recommended too. For Dolphin trips to Wasini or any other sea trip Shone is the man to see outside Plaza or find Muny or Antony outside Neptune a few yards along. All these guys can be recommended for a great price and a great experience.
Don't be intimidated by the "hassle" on the beach it really is part of the holiday. Go there get out and meet everyone ...you'll love it. Give it a try.

An overall great holiday, however once you have been on safari and topped up your tan, did some of the water sports and did a few day trips - we ran out of things to keep us occupied!
The hotel staff were very friendly but things are never done in a hurry! Half of the hotel rooms are very nice, the other half are dirty and not as described i.e. we were told we would have a sea view, fridge and air con. Initially there was no s.v, no fridge and the air con was broken. We complained and by the start of the second week had a lovely room!
The food in the hotel is fine. Buffet style, BBQ night is the best. If you have a particularly early start (Safari 5:30am) ask reception about an early breakfast. For the best pizza go to the Severin hotel next door! For a great selection of food go to the Nakumat (supermarket), the book shop has loads.
Entertainment within the hotel is particularly bad! Water aerobics in the morning and the same shows (acrobats) at night! Table tennis table is available, as is a pool table and darts. However the entertainment in the Severin is much better! Plus they have table football.
The beaches are lovely but not hassle free due to the large number of beach boys. They will try to sell you anything. The tour operators don't like you booking excursions through them - we did it a couple of times and had no problems, worked out a good bit cheaper too. The advantage being you can bargain with them to get the best deal.
Tips: Take high factor sun cream! If you are on malaria tablets be especially cautious....they make you burn more! Go to the local supermarket and buy bannana cream - brilliant for any kind of bites (mosquito) and sunburn. Take good mosquito repellent. Always find out how much the taxi will be before you get in! I would suggest travelling by matatu - very cheap mini bus, 20 ks a great experience!
First Choice rep was great as was the flight!

A return visit for us to this hotel. We had another fantastic time. The hotel itself has not changed however some of the services had.
The evening meal was no longer buffet style every evening. I think this was due to the fact that the hotel was quiet. Therefore it was buffet and table service on alternate nights. The food was basic but very tasty. I did however prefer the buffet evenings.
The bar in the reception area was closed but the beach bar opened from 10am to 6pm and the pool bar was opening all day and closed after the last customer.
The lovely "Bedouin style" tents had been altered to hold the pool table and table tennis table so this was disappointing, as I really preferred lounging on sofas enjoying a glass of wine! No doubt many people prefer playing pool!
Our room was right on the front so we had a fabulous view .There is nothing better than sitting on the balcony listening to the ocean. The only change to the rooms is that the mini bar fridge no longer holds stock ...so just go to the supermarket and store your own!
Evening entertainment was no longer every evening but again I think this was due to the lack of guests, this also made the entertainment staffs job difficult, as there were very few people to take part in any of the "games".
Despite these changes we had a lovely time. We like the atmosphere of the hotel when it is quiet. Everyone is very friendly, both the guests and the staff.
The "locals" on the beach welcome you like long lost friends, and I can honestly say that some of them have become just that!
We will return to Kenya, as we are involved with Mikoroshoni School and have many other contacts in the area. I will certainly make every effort to get back to the Plaza hotel.
