Firstly, I can't understand why anyone would write a negative review about this hotel. The hotel was clean, food was utterly amazing and the staff were so attentive and friendly. It may interest some people reading this that if you get to know the staff you will understand... more

Beyond our expectations !!
We stayed at Papillon Lagoon for 8 nights from 2nd of Oct after 7 nights on safari in Kenya,it was the perfect way to relax and unwind after a full on week !! The people we met from management to porters were so friendly and could'nt do enough for you. Food was very good always enough there and catered for all tastes. The pool was tremendous! Immaculately kept with a great pool bar ideal for a cool relaxing beer after sunning yourself on our sunbeds which were kept for us daily by the attendents for a few shillings !! We... more
Fantastic all round
We came to stay at this hotel on an all-inclusive basis as part of our honeymoon package. It is situated approximately a 45 minute drive from Mombasa City. The hotel is beautifully laid out with mature and clean gardens. The rooms are also very clean and tidy. The staff are excellent, extremely friendly and do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable, from the gardeners to bar staff, actvities people to waiters, receptionists to care takers. The food is also exceptional with a great, healthy and very tasty variety provided for... more
Average at best
We stayed in this hotel for a week. We had told our travel agent we would prefer a beachfront room but on arrival we were given a garden room as far from the beach as you could get. We asked about a beachfront room and were told to check the next morning. When we got to the garden room we didn't bother to unpack. We were extremely disappointed (and disgusted) with the garden room. It was very run down, dirty, had loose electrical points on the walls and ceiling, very stained curtains and a useless mosquito net which was full of holes... more
Get what you pay for!
On the positive side the staff are friendly - even when not after a tip.The entrance and reception is quite imposing BUT the rooms are tired and could do with an update. The showers are appalling, probably the worst in Kenya-nothing but a poor dribble. That said they are clean. The food is unimaginative though plentiful, there is not always a vegetarian option. The drinks(local) are not very good and could turn you tee-total(having said that some people did not appear to leave the bars!)The beach is beautiful to look at but a nightmare to... more
Great Place
We stayed at the PLR end Aug/begin Sept. Can only endorse comments made on review dated 11/9/06 in terms of the hotel setting, grounds , food (good but repitative, stir fry best meal), and cleanliness. Our party of 7 were from age 16 to 78 and all found something to enjoy. The evening entertainment was a bit naff but the day time activities as organised by George and his team of animators made our holiday. The water polo especially was great fun. The staff were all friendly but outside of the hotel the pestering to buy wood... more
Amazing place!
We stayed at this hotel for two weeks at the begining of August. We went there on our honeymoon and were not disappointed at all. All the staff are very friendly and helpful. the grounds are amazing, and everywhere is so clean (our room was cleaned everyday whilst we were there!) The food is amazing too, although it does get a bit repetative, we were there for two weeks and they seemed to repeat the menu on a weekly basis with a few variations. you must look out for their stir fry lunch day, amazing!!!! The Gardens are... more
Wedding day to remember
Well what can i say i stayed in this hotel before i met my husband in 95 & 97 & it's got a lot better. When my husband asked me where i would like to get married, i told him i would love to get married in kenya as it's my favoriate place. So we made all our plans & got married at 11oclock on 14th feb 2006 it was really really lovely, my flowers where lovely we had african dancers they came & got me from my room, with the lovely wedding co-dinater Zaina who made sure that every thing went to plan they walked me all through the gardens down to... more
Variable views
A good place to go if you want to really chill out. There were pluses and minuses about the facilities but after we left we were told the hotel was due for refurbishment. Although there were variable numbers of kids there, it is not really a place for them. Teenagers found it boring especially in the evenings. They can only take so much of native dancing. Promised daily animation often did not take place and the animation team were nice and friendly but could be lazy. Sports equipment was fairly appalling i.e., only 1 decent badminton... more
Excellent and beautiful place to stay
Totally recommend staying at this hotel.. its a beautiful setting, the staff work very hard and are very friendly... the food was excellent, very healthy and varied.. We got married at this hotel, they arranged everything.. we didnt have to worry or do anything.. just be there..Zaina, the wedding co-ordinator was very helpful.. fully recommend having the african dancers if you plan a wedding there. The beach was beautiful, only thing that spoilt it was the beach boys, selling you anything and everything.. they will not leave you alone, but... more
Excellent value for money
We loved our stay in this friendly hotel. Spacious room with sea view and view on the pool and lush garden. The food was excellent as well at lunch time or at dinner. Varied, enough and always hot. Our compliments to the owners who run this place. For once (both my wife and I are extensive world travelers) we had nothing to complain about. One should always bear in mind that this is Africa, and given that fact the value for money is excellent. Jacques and Yolande Vossen - Belgium
