This was our 7th time to Turgutreis...

This was our 7th time to Turgutreis and the worst holiday of the lot. None of the staff except the manager could speak any English. Th only thing good about the place was the shower which was very strong, the grouting in the pool was all black, our first week was a waste of time having breakfast as they were running out of cereal and the eggs were all runny and we were told only one cup of coffee or tea at breakfast until we called the rep in and the rules were as much as you like between 8 and 10. Those people with their wonderful reviews must have stayed in a different hotel. The next time we go it certainly wont be to stay there.

the ayvan hotel was clean friendly...

Sep 2008, Mr T Torrance

the ayvan hotel was clean friendly and the food in the hotels camelot restaurant was excellent at all times of the day and evening.the hotel has a lovely swimming pool with sunbeds also a sun terrace which becomes very hot mid afternoon. beware unless already tanned! the beach is a stones throw from the hotel , sunbeds are free and hikmet (one of the waiters) was always about to serve us with ice cold effes lager when needed!while there i celebrated my birthday and tekin (the hotel owner) and his suberb staff surprised me with a party and a birthday cake made by the chef sitar.a 10 minute walk along the new promenade which is beautifully lit at night took us into bar street.there are various retaurants and pubs like tashs bar the corner bar and scotties where irene gave us a warm welcome. we also liked marcos bar where ex pats gather and joanne kept us laughing.the can restaurant came highly recommended from a previous review and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal there. the saturday market was huge hot and very busy but well worth a visit. i would highly recommend the ayvan to all ages and families. cant wait to get back next year sooner if possible!hopefully we will meet up again with jean and jerry and all the new friends we made.

Firstly, the Sunny Gardens Ayvan is...

Firstly, the Sunny Gardens Ayvan is now known as Ayvan hotel. The reason being that the previous people have now gone and the owner of the hotel has decided to manage it himself.
He has spent a vast amount of money in adding a super bar/restaurant with a terrace overlooking the sea where we sat each morning enjoying the view whilst eating our breakfast.
Above the bar/restaurant is a sun deck, again overlooking the sea where you can laze around on the loungers, large beanbags or sit and have a drink and a bite to eat. Although the rooms are still 2* they have been decorated and spruced up, but hey, how long do you spend in the room?
There is now new bed linen and lovely soft towels - so no more hard scratchy ones as mentioned by previous guests. The restaurant/bar staff Billy, and Baytula are a couple of really nice guys.
Billy has a good knowledge of the English language and Baytula is keen to learn. The owner Tekan (I think that is how you spell his name) is fluent in English. There were a few teething problems but once Tekan was notified of them he was on to it straight away and problem solved.
We ate in the restaurant on numerous occasions and the food was really nice and very reasonable unlike previous hotels we have stayed in. What a sensible guy. Keep the prices down, the food and menu good, drinks the same prices as in town and your guests will be happy to eat and drink at the hotel.
During the winter changes were made all along the beach front. A road has been put in (which is mostly for cyclists and pedestrians) so you no longer step out of the hotel on to the beach. You just have to cross the roadway to the loungers belonging to the Ayvan.
Turgutreis was a lot bigger than we had been lead to believe but were told by the locals that it had been developed vastly in the last five years and of course now has a large marina and many boutique shops. A couple of good restaurants we ate in were 'Uncles', the one behind Bar Street, 'The Ivy' at the far end of Bar Street, and La Villa along the front opposite the boats. Very nice food, but be warned you need to be really hungry to finish the meal.
Some restaurants put on a service charge so check this before you order your meal. We were told by our rep that we could catch the Dolmus to Bodrum etc from outside the hotel. Don't believe it. You have to go to the bus station in town to catch a dolmus to anywhere you want to visit. It is to the left and behind the large supermarket 'Migras'.
We went to Gumusluk (not sure of the spelling) for a nice quiet day out. It is a little resort with all of the restaurants along the waterfront. The idea is principally the same as Turgutreis, use the sunbeds in front of the restaurant and then you order drinks etc. from them. They are renowned for serving the fish caught that day.
There are only a few gift shops so not tacky and there is no music playing. A very peaceful day out and it only takes about fifteen minutes or so to get to.
We only went on one excursion with the tour operator and that was to see 'The Dream Girls' in Gumbet. They are three drag artists, singing, dancing, and telling jokes. A good night out but my advice is do not take children (as some people had) it is basically an adult only night and I feel that it was not the place for young children.
Overall we had a really lovely two weeks at the Ayvan and anyone wanting a relaxing, laid back holiday then this is definitely the place to stay. We will definitely be paying another visit. Just another comment about the owner. One of the guests had an accident whilst out and was taken to hospital via ambulance.
The owner informed the tour operator who said there was nothing they could do as it was about 11 p.m. Tekan then telephoned the hospital to find out what the extent of the injuries were, spoke to the guest who told him she would have to stay in over night. She was concerned that she did not have her medication with her.
He then arranged for a friend of his to take the medication to the hospital and to fetch her brother who had accompanied her in the ambulance to the hospital, back to the hotel.
How many other hotel owners would have done that?

Turgutreis is a fantastic resort...
7 / 10
Nov 2006, Mrs J A Bance

Turgutreis is a fantastic resort which I would highly recommend. It is situated on a peninsular jutting out into the sea and so has a nice refreshing sea breeze to take the heat off for those who can't stand the really hot temperatures.
The Sunny Ayvan Hotel is a pleasant family run business, nothing flashy but clean and nicely decorated. We arrived to be greeted by lots of cockroaches but were relieved to find that they had been driven out by pest killers and sure enough we never saw another one after the first day. Breakfast was excellent, anything you asked for, different every day. The staff were friendly and Ricky (head waiter) often came out with us for a drink at the end of his long working day.
The town is splendid with bars and restaurants serving every kind of food imaginable. The people are very friendly and like to offer you apple tea in the hope that you will return for a meal or buy their wares in the shops. Fave restaurant The Well, run by Fahri, Huseyin and Uyr. Tell them Jill and Nikki say hello!
Only one thing I need warn you about. If you buy your excursions from TTA travel I don't recommend you take their free trip into the mountains to Etrim village. It is a very clever family carpet business setup in an ancient village. You will meet a young girl named Belgin and her brother Engin who will show you around the old buildings, wine and dine you and then introduce you to their father who they say cannot understand English. They then lead you into a large room and show you masses of carpets, then comes the hard sell. We found ourselves up there on our own with no-one else to take away the feeling of obligation towards them and no way out until the driver was ready to take us down the treacherous mountainside. We were told they would make us a carpet identical to one we liked but in a smaller size.
We haggled for ages, the starting price was £760 and they begrudgingly sold it to us for £450. Still far more than we were prepared to pay. They told us it would be ready in 8 weeks and shipped to our home. After many phone calls and lots of e-mailing we eventually got a carpet 7 months later. To our surprise when we opened the packaging it was not a scrap like the one we ordered in any way, colour, shape or form. It looked like something that had been laying in his extensive warehouse for years.
So beware don't even go there unless you really want to buy a carpet and like being ripped off!
