The Splendid, which is an ideal choice for groups, is a spacious and relaxing mountain style hotel. The accommodation and service offered here is of a great standard. A valuable asset to the hotel is its indoor swimming pool which proves to be very popular after a long days skiing. The centre of Sauze d’Oulx is 460m downhill from the hotel and the main Clotes ski lift is 300m away. The ski bus stops directly outside the hotel. loading...

" It was our first skiing holiday with... "

It was our first skiing holiday with children age 12 & 8. We had a terrific time the ski school was fantastic, we had a few private lessons with a ski instructor who visits the hotel most nights. Food was fantastic and plentiful although it seemed to take forever in the evening and the 8yr old fell asleep a couple of times.
Only draw back was the very steep hill up to the hotel. The first few times we kept stopping but by the end of the week we were marching up the hill. Ski bus stops outside hotel. Our 12yr old skied back to the hotel on only her 2nd day!
We had a lovely day in sestriere and would recommended the lifts over their, although it can be cold and lonely as it is a single chair lift. We found the ski lockers up the mountain a rip off and do not recommended them as the ski bus stop is at the bottom of the lift and stops outside most of the hotels.
We would go back again. I recommend hiring boots, skis etc in resort and shop around. Also lift passes are cheaper out there!

The hotel is at the top of a big, steep hill and if it's the end of the season, it's not great humping your gear up it after a day on the slopes! But hey, we all need more excercise anyway. (You can take a naughty short cut to the piste down a private road just opposite and avoid the hill!) After your 2 hour dinner, it takes some motivation to go down to the village for a few beers, knowing you have that climb back up later on...
We were lucky and it snowed all day on our first full day there (1st April), so there was 12 inches of powder for the first 2 days but it was hot during the day the rest of the week and freezing at night so the snow soon thawed and it got crusty and icy. Lower slopes were very slushy but the pisteurs did a great job keeping the Clotes run open right to the village even though the snow everywhere in Sauze had gone. It was a bit like water skiing by the time we got to the bottom each night, though!
All in all, quite a nice village, some good bars and shops, basic but perfectly acceptable hotel, snow very good at altitude and pistes well groomed. Sestriere nothing to shout about, snow was better high up around Sauze D'Oulx, but if you get the chance, go on a day trip to Montgenevre, just over the border in France (40 mins by coach). Snow's great, excellent runs, quiet slopes, excellent.
