Special holiday

Spent two fabulous weeks at this 2 star hotel in August 2011. Room basic but kept lovely and clean by the friendly lady cleaner. We were on the fourth floor, top of the hotel with the most amazing view out to sea. Our daughter joined us in our second week and had her own room on the ground floor. A very big thank you to Makis for looking after us all so well and for making our holiday a very special and relaxing one. To all you football..sports mad men out there this hotel is well worth a visit. Ladies sit back with a cocktail watching the world go by, perfect bliss. The food and drinks were excellent with superb seating right next to the sea. Hire a jeep if you can its the best way to see the whole island which can be done in a day.
It was our fifth visit to Thassos, our last one being six years ago and as always we headed straight to Kostis Taverna the best in town. Lovely friendly family who go out of their way to ensure you have the best choice of food you want to eat. We will definitely return to Thassos in a few years time as it is a very special place. X

This was our second time on Thassos

Jul 2011, Cindylou

This was our second time on Thassos- the first time we stayed at Christos apartments but this is sadly no longer served by a British company after the demise of XL airlines. This time we stayed at Anna Beach Hotel and we were very happy with it.There was a short wait for our cases to arrive so we sat at the beach bar and the guy who runs the bar (Makis) brought us a complimentary drink. We asked for a beer thinking it would just be a snall one but it was a lovely ice cold large one!
The room was a very decent size with a single bed in a separate room from the double which was a very nice surprise. It meant that my daughter and I could close the door on my partner and not hear him snoring! We had a pleasant view over the pool. The kitchen facilities are not good but we never use them anyway apart from making a cup of tea (although I did have to boil the kettle in the bedroom as the socket didn't work in the kitchen).
The beach which is literally just across a narrow road in front of the hotel is rather small and very rocky but if you turn right out of the hotel and follow the road round to the left then left again you get to Christos Apartments. Their piece of beach is much sandier and wider (although there are still lots of rocks and pebbles and you need shoes to go in the sea). They are perfectly happy for you to use the sunbeds free of charge and even their pool (as long as you shower the sand off your feet first- there's an outdoor shower at the back you can use)There is a lovely, friendly Greek lad who patrols the beach and brings drinks from the bar for you. The food there is good also. Try the pizza...
Back to Anna Beach though- the food is also very good there. Their daily specials are delicious especially the moussaka and beef stifado (possibly the best I've had in Greece)The couple who run the bar at Anna Beach are very friendly - Makis is the point of contact for the owner of the hotel. We asked for a replacement light bulb and more pillows and got them straight away ( the pillows looked non too clean though...)Don't buy your bottled water from the bar here as he charges 2Euros for a bottle which you can get in a supermarket for 50 cents!
Absolutely the WORST restaurant in Limenaria is called Kostis- it is down towards the end of the beach and we have never been served such dire food before in our lives. Avoid, avoid avoid. However, next door is the best restaurant ( I think its called Mouraggio or similar) and we ate there several times.
The journey to Thassos is quite tiring-its a long day as after your flight you have to get a ferry across to the island but we felt it was worth it.The ferry trip itself is very pleasant- the seagulls fly alongside and take food from your outstretched hand.
Thassos is relatively unspoilt and Limenaria is very quiet and relaxing. We had a lovely holiday.

Do not stay on the top floor!

Upon arrival at Limenaria our bus pulled up on the main road. The Thomsons rep (Michael) flagged down a passing motorist who he explained would show us to our accomodation. The motorist actually went to the dentists so we were abandoned in the back streets and had to find the hotel ourseleves. That was the last I saw of our rep until he came to pick us up two weeks later. The welcome meeting was arranged for lunch time, so that was no good for us and quite frankly I did not want anything else to do with him after his transfer.
Our room was 402, on the top floor with a wonderful sea view. That was the only good point. There was no toaster and our cups, cutlery and plates where dirty from the previous occupants. The room was tiny and on two levels with what can only be explained as a ladder with wonky railings, linking the two levels.
The wardrobe is upstairs and you can not stand upright on the upper level. I had crawl on my knees. I measured the height of the upper level to be 3 foot in places.
I had to put my full body weight onto the balcony doors to close it whilst lifting upwards as the door did not fit the frame.
I have never seen towels as bad, thread bear. Our neighbours towel even had a hole in it the size of a head.
There where many problems with this hotel but the room was cleaned daily and the staff were helpful and genuine nice people which made it a bit better.
That said my room was the worst accomdation I have stayed in Greece in 25 years of visiting the Greek islands.
I was very dissapointed with Thomsons and would never book with them again. I would recommend visiting Limenaria but would advice alternative accomodation.

I visited Thassos with my husband and...

I visited Thassos with my husband and 3 children in October last year. This has got to be one of Greece's most hidden gems.
The Island itself is reached by ferry from Keramoti which takes about 20 minutes from Kavala airport. The ferry crossing takes approx 15 minutes (don't worry it is not a fishing boat it is a massive cargo ferry)
We then had an hour and 15 minute transfer to Limenaria. (Limenas to the locals) The island is very small only 90 k in diameter and is really easy to get around in a car. As the main form of income for the island is marble so all the roads are adapted to carry the massive marble trucks.
We stayed at the Anna Beach apartments which is run by Mum Dad Grandma Grandad and 2 kids. They are a fantastic family so warm and welcoming and they made a massive fuss of the children. They also have a great bar man who is a complete comedian and a huge Liverpool football fan.

They have a huge wide-screen TV that is wheeled out whenever there are sporting things on and makes for a great atmosphere.
The Anna Beach has a fantastic beach front location. It has its own veranda which you can sit on from early morning until as late as you like, the sunsets are sensational.
The only downside to the accommodation is the recently added 4th floor which has completely shaded the pool, but being so close to the beach this really didn't bother us at all.
They serve family food, many Mediterranean dishes and also a massive breakfast menu.
The resort of Limenaria is a delight beautiful old buildings converted into tavernas many along the beach front and lots in the village itself. Most of the Tavernas have been run by the same families for generations so the home cooked Greek dishes are the best to try.
There is a huge imposing house that looks over the the village if you ask the locals what it is they don't say much but one guy did tell us that it was where the German officers, during the occupation, kept an eye on the villagers. You can go up to the house and look around it. It is very eerie as there are huge furnaces all around it.
You must get a car here, there is a beach called Aliki beach which is the best on the island. Thassos town is great for shopping.
One word of warning do not visit this island on the 1st of October it is the last week of the season and we literally had to grab the children and force our way onto the return ferry. The whole island closes down on the 7th of October it was crazy! Even so we would visit here again in a flash and we are definitely going back this year.
