Richemond Hotel Reviews

Pretty average Hotel - it has some charm but is also ageing. Rooms at the front have a good view of Mount Blanc - back rooms overlook the bus stop - but its not to bad - girlfriend moaned about traffic and old wallpaper - I did not notice. Fairly comfy beds - toilet bidet... more

superb
This is SUCH a great hotel. I have stayed twice there on skiing holidays with my 3 boys. The first was a package deal but I arranged the second myself because this hotel was simply perfect. It is rather old fashioned, but that just means lots of comfort and a welcome from the family who own and run it. The rooms are huge and warm with wonderful views. There are huge baths. There is a rather tatty, but very good, games room. The hotel is very cantral, very near the ski-hire shops and restaurants. The ski bus has a stop just by the back entrance. The boot room is very good. Can't afford to go this year, and perhaps should go to a different resort next time as I feel we have "done" Chamonix, but will definitely go back again one day and it will certainly be to THIS hotel.
Richemond. Perfect for what we wanted.
I stayed here for 4 nights in January 2005. There were two of us sharing a room. For the price you are getting excellent value in that you are right in the middle of town. There's good parking and a two minuet trip the ski lifts. At night you fall out of the front door onto the main drag, no buses or taxis for a night out. The hotel is old and need of refurbishment but it has a certain charm. The staff are very pleasant and helpful, ther room clean, a reasonable breakfast, place to put your skis. What else do you want if your skiing all day and drinking all night? If your after a place to sleep with no fancy extras in a good position, this is the place for you.
Fab hotel, location and staff
Stayed at this hotel in Jan 06. Agree with the other reviews about this hotel - it may be slightly dated but this simply adds to its appeal. Its in a great location, the ski room leads out to the back door which is virtually at the ski bus stop. Out of the front door is the padestrian area which is handy for pubs, restaurants, mini supermarket, ski hire shops and so on. I doubt if you could get a better location in Chamonix. The staff were excellent, appeared to have worked there all their lives and took much pride in having done so - nothing was too much trouble. There was no proper shower in the bathroom but after a day's skiing, the bath was perfect. I only hope that no-one does buy this hotel and turn it into a boutique hotel as this would spoil its certain charm.
Great Value, Great Location
I discovered the Richemond Hotel in January 05, having previously stayed in rather more modern but anodyne hotels in Chamonix. The hotel is an extremely grand building - all turn of the century parquet floors, high ceilings, stone staircases, large bedrooms, roll-top baths etc. It's the kind of place that someone could take, do up and turn into a very chic boutique hotel - but they haven't. Instead it is clearly more than a little past it's heyday - but then you get to stay there for an extraordinary price. I paid 88 euros per night in Jan for two people, including breakfast - you can't do better for the space and central location. Add to that the extremely friendly and helpful hotel staff and it's a winner. Only downsides: no proper shower in the bathroon and the beds could do with replacing - very roll-together mattresses, but after a hard days' skiing and apres-skiing you're probably too tired to notice. I had such a good time that as soon as I got back I rang up and booked another weekend in March.
Wish we had stayed longer
We stayed at the Hotel Richemond for one night this summer and found it to be a great value - we really wish that we were able to stay longer. We had a beautiful old room with French doors and a balcony facing the town and a view of Mont Blanc. The room was very spacious, as was the bathroom (which had a heated floor), and if the bed had a new matress everything would have been perfect. Service was quite friendly and the location was spectacular - right off the main road and close to everything. Even parking was easy. I definitely recommend this hotel if you're looking for a charming hotel at a reasonable price in Chamonix.
Great value
Stayed at the Richemond for 3 nights at the height of the tourist season (late July) and found it to be a great value and somewhat reminescent of "old world" grand style hotels. Room was large, clean and well appointed with decent bed and good-sized bathroom. While we would have preferred a front room facing Mt. Blanc, our backside corner did have views of the mountains on the other side of the valley. Hotel is located on a main thoroughfare, just outside the congested tourist center, and convenient to all activities and sights. Hotel staff very courteous, helpful and friendly. Chamonix is a laid-back, sports and outdoor recreational activities town with many good dining choices, decent nightlife, and great for families or couples. Would recommend the Richemond to all.
Loved the Hotel Richemond
When we stayed in Chamonix in June of 2001, the Hotel Richemond was excellent. Roughly six blocks from the train station and four from the Telepherique de l'Aiguille du Midi, the cable car going up Mt. Blanc, this is a large, grand style hotel set off the main street, rue du Docteur Paccard, by a terrace and driveway. Without a doubt, this was the most comfortable hotel room of the dozen or so two star hotels I have experienced in France. The room was well appointed with a large bed and a separate large bathroom. More like an American hotel room than any French hotel room I've seen. Both the bedroom and bath had large windows that opened up on a breathtaking view of Mt Blanc; you could lie back in the bathtub and look up at Mont Blanc if you really wanted to. The decent, if unremarkable, breakfast buffet (eggs, cereal, juices, pastries) was served in the spacious hotel dining room just off of the large hotel lobby. The staff we encountered all spoke English and were very helpful, especially with directions. Restaurants, cafes, and other shopping all within easy walking distance as Chamonix is a small town(really, is anywhere in France ever far from a cafe or restaurant ?) and as rue du Docteur Paccard is one of the two or three main tourist streets. The hotel is really just off the end of the touristy section, but (the only negative) loud drunks can still be heard noisily finding their way home at 3:00 in the morning. The end of June, when we were there, is the beginning of the summer tourist season and all the hotels and restaurants were reopening after the winter - note that some had not yet reopened as July 1st really marks the start of the season. The exchange rate in June of 2001 was about 7 FF to the dollar and the room worked out to roughly $70 per night as I recall for a double room. We are planning on returning to Chamonix and staying at the Richemond again. I can recommend it highly.
