We have just returned from 2 weeks staying at the wonderful Tour de la Calanca. We took a long time to decide whether to book it wondering if it would live up to our expectations. The thought of staying in such an historic building was very appealing and we expected it to be basic inside which it was. For the cost, we think it could be a little more luxurious inside, it wouldn't take much doing. (The outdoor shower was great as we weren't too keen on the indoor bathroom.) This weighed against the location, the views, the setting and the semi-tranquility, we were very glad we went.
There are a few drawbacks if you are expecting a really peaceful location. There are camp sites nearby and a road to the beach that reaches both these and the beach is right next to the Tour. There is hardly ever complete peace and quiet. There is a stadium on the Olmeto plage that is used for various events during the summer and discos nearby that go on well into the early hours (atleast 3 am). As it's such a hot time of year it is very difficult to keep cool in the tour so having the windows open is a must.
We still wouldn't have missed it for the world and if you don't mind the thumping of disco music at night, jet skis by day then this will be perfect for you. The roof terrace in the morning and evening is lovely. Theres always something going on in the Gulf de Valinca to watch. The garden terrace below the Tour is very cool and shady and there's plenty of space to wander within the grounds. For the beach to yourselves get down by mid morning or much later in the day, the campers and other holiday makers soon find it. It is by no means a private beach for occupants of the Tour.
Other than that(!) Corsica is a wonderful island and if we went back it would definitely be out of season.
