Initial thoughts of the hotel was it looked clean and well kept (after all it is only a few years old!). The location of the hotel just off the main street and up a very steep incline meant that it was often very difficult to walk up and down the street due to the snow/ice.... more

Resort was very good. It hadn't snowed for quite a while so was quite icy- better for skiers than snowboarders. Plenty of pistes to choose from. During the long journey through the other resorts and visiting other places, I would say Soldeu was the best all round. For... more

Great Little Hotel in a Good Location
What a great little hotel in a good location. Right in the centre of the village and less than 5 minutes walk to the bars and restaurants, Fat Alberts and Ice Berg were our favourite. Hotel very clean and staff friendly. The bar lacked atmosphere but then again it was the first week of the ski season. We had a great twin room (103) the heating could have been a little higher but it was fixed on two and sometimes felt a little cold, but if you can get room (101) it is more like a suite, twin rooms seem to face the slopes but the doubles which were small were at the back of the hotel, our friends twin room (108) looked onto a brick wall, so try and get a lower no and go for a twin. We also had a little balcony so it was great to keep the wine, water & milk cold. Take a kettle with you if you like an early morning/late night coffee etc. We also looked out of our room towards hotel Bruxelles with the slopes behind which our other friends stayed in. The food was OK, you had a choice of hot breakfast ie. egg, bacon, beans, sausage & tomatoes, hash browns, toast & jam or there was around 5 different cereals, bread, cheese, ham, danish pastries, yoghurts, fresh fruit, fruit juices, tea, coffee & hot chocolate etc. If they ran out of anything, you would have to wait 5 minutes or more sometimes. Once, I asked for more bread and the waiter told me to wait and carried on drying his cutlery, so my food was getting cold. The dinner in the evening was also buffet style and you could have soup to start and various salads you also had around 3 hot choices of main plus vegetables, we had chips every night except once when we had mash. You also had around 4 choices of sweets and icecream. Cheese & biscuits and a coffee would have been nice. Christmas dinner was also ok, but lacked vegetables and potatoes. Clear soup with pasta & tiny meatballs floating in it, fish & mussels in a sauce, chicken with a prune sauce then a swiss roll like cake with cream, the wine and champagne was flowing though and they kept re-filling your glass. It took around 7 minutes walk to the Gondola. The queues were long but moved quick. The ski school was great for me being a learner although I think they try to push you a little too hard. They cramed all the ski schools into the morning so there was far too many in a class, there was 14 in ours and more in some classes and we were all at different levels our instructor told us and that was after we were assessed as to who would go into what group. It was great to learn to ski in wide open areas, although you have to have eyes in the back of your head where snowboarders are concerned. All in all, a great little hotel in a great location and would definately recommend & stay there again. Soldeu is far superior to Pas which we thought was tacky.
great hotel
Stayed here for my yearly "girly holiday". We had a great time. The staff were freindly and the drimks were the cheapest in soldeu. Rooms were small and basic, but so clean you could eat your food off them. You got free ski storage, the walk down the steep hill was a bit hairy in ski boots, but was a short stroll to the lifts, so was not bad. The hotel is right in the middle of the resort and we even got breakfast before we left at 4am! Good value for money and saves paying out for the 4 star hotels we have stayed in on our many visits. Food is a bit hit and miss, but ok. Have just booked this hotel for next year over and above all the "posh" ones that you only pay through the nose for. Great little hotel, great holiday, thanks, see you next year, (can't wait)!!!!
Small Rooms!!!!
I have just returned from a weeks skiing holiday in Soldeu staying at the Hotel Soldeu Maistre and thought I'd write a short review about the hotel. The hotel is in a great location in the centre of the village and is extremly clean and well maintained. The staff are very friendly and are quick to be of assistance. We took our 15 month old daughter with us and the staff were great with her, she was the centre of attention the whole week! The only down sides with this hotel is the size of the rooms and the food. We had a twin room which was small, made even smaller with a cot in it but the double rooms were even worse!! They are tiny with only a very small bath. There wasnt a lot of choice when it came to meals, there was a hot and a cold buffet on offer both at breakfast and evening meals, but it all seemed a bit of a mis- match, nothing seemed to go together!! Also there was hardly any vegetarian options on offer. Overall this hotel is very clean, staff are great and if you don't mind a small room and not much choice for your meals its good hotel to choose.
Excellent but noisy..........
Stayed for a week's skiing in March 2005, only minor problems..... * walls very thin between rooms * close to clubs so lots of overnight noise until 4.30 am * recommend removing sharp edged soap dish in bath/shower before use! * bath very slippery Would go back (with earplugs), every thing else very nice and excellent standard of cleanliness. All other reviews say steep hill a problem, but in reality it is only 20 metres up the steep slope; whilst I can see this as a problem in ski boots when icy, we hired ski lockers at the gondola and the roads were dry anyway so this wasn't a problem for us.
Great hotel,great ski-ing!
Just come back from a great week in Soldeu, dont let the seasoned well travelled skier put you off this place.more catalan than french this gem of a place has had some of the best powder I have ever skied on and I have never caught the sun so bad in my life ,its very strong beware! It is now the 21st biggest in europe ski link,it will keep most skiers happy. The hotel was excellent should be a 4* and not a 3* the staff were great and the food was plentiful and varied, I asked for a nice view and my wish was granted 3 floor on a corner overlooking the slopes, which are only 5 minutes away. If you need new ski gear pop in to see Stefan at esports pirineu on the way to the gondola, everything is over 40% off , I bought some Head boots for £80,priced them up at home for £189 ! hes a great guy, who gives great unbiased advice. One downside of the hotel is the pubs and clubs are noisey late at night, so my girlfriend said ....I didnt here here it as I always take my ear plugs with me ! Love to go back again but im the sort of person who wants to see something different each year, but if you have never been go, you wont be disapointed!
Fabulous - especially for groups
If all the 3* hotels across Europe were of the same standard as the Maistre then there would be no need to pay the extra to stay in 4* or 5*. This hotel was booked through a large tour operator for a group of 10. I cannot fault the way we were treated and looked after the whole week by the friendly staff. The cleanliness in this hotel is supreme and the food was well above average for a 3* and with so much choice each evening everyone could have something they enjoyed. It is perfectly placed in the centre of Soldeu for easy access to the gondola and the bars and restaurants (would recommend a trip to The Squirrel!) and the road outside that is quite steep caused more hilarity than injury! Would highly recommend this as an affordable and excellent choice for your stay in Soldeu. NB - the photo is taken from the balcony and within 48 hours the cars on the left were buried in snow!
Lovely Comfortable Stay!
Four of us stayed at the Soldeu Maistre Feb 2004 and loved it. We found the staff helpful and friendly, the food plentiful with loads of choice at the buffet breakfast and dinner. We happened to be quite lucky and had bagged a large room and bathroom ( I think it was designed for disabled guests primarily). The bedlinen was changed regularly and the hotel kept immaculate. Although situated close to the main Ski Lift, I suggest hiring a locker close the the lift as wearing ski boots up the steep slope next to the hotel could be fateful in icy conditions! All in all a lovely hotel suited to couples and adult groups. We are all in our early to mid twenties and found the hotel suited our needs perfectly.
About to visit for the third time
Stayed twice at the Soldeu Maistre and cannot fault it. The staff are friendly, the food is good and the hotel is immaculate. The only gripe is that the road outside is very steep and quite difficult to walk down when wearing ski boots, especially after it's just been snowing. If you want a good hotel at a reasonable price thaen this is a MUST!!!!!
catalan traditional
I have been to this resort for the last ten years and have been to many of the hotels. For the last three years I have gone to the soldeu maistre and enjoyed my stay. It is a quiet hotel very well situated. It is traditional catalan and the meals reflect this so be prepared for a meat fish mix. They have a lovely staff and the rooms are adequate and clean. The referbishment was a sucess and the quality of the furnishings reflect the catalan tradition. All in all an unpretensious hotel suited to the more mature client but well situated if you want a wilder social life. No tV room or games room so not really a kids hotel. I Love it and will return again this year. I hope it remains as it is as the resort needs a balance.
Great Place
I've been going here 4 years running and am looking forward to my 5th visit in 2004. Buffet breakfast and dinner always has loads of choice and my son (now 12 ) has never been stumped for food.
