Having stayed at the Riu Palace Macau in July we thought we'd upgrade to the new hotel next door for Christmas/New Year.
First impressions are breathtaking. The building itself is really beautiful as you approach it and the huge lobby is both welcoming and austere.
Rooms are not much different to other Rius but overall this is not a five star resort.
It is badly let down by the food - not as good a choice as other Rius and repeated too often.
There is also only one restaurant open for lunch and the "speciality" restaurants have to be pre-booked (with some people queuing for over an hour) and aren't really worth the effort.
Even the Americans complained about the food. Personally I felt that meats were always undercooked ( I prefer mine well done) and you almost always had to have fries - definitely not 5 star cooking.
The entertainment was amateurish and the New Year party was a joke as it took nearly two hours for the bands' speakers to be connected up, then the balloon net failed to open at midnight.
Those who'd "dressed to the nines" for the occasion must have felt out of place - most people were casually well dressed but the evening - like all the show evenings - was spoiled by children being allowed to run wild.
Perhaps I'd been spoiled by the Macau, but if I'd to choose or recommend one or the other, it would have to be the Macau as the food, entertainment and general atmosphere make for a much better holiday environment.
