We stayed at the Riu Palace from 2nd October to 16th and loved every minute of it. Ignore all the bad reviews you here on here they are not true!. Despite being delayed by five hours (thank you Thomson Airways) once we pulled up at the hotel all that was forgotten. It looks and feels like a palace. You don’t even have to unload your luggage, that is done by the bell boys. Check in was very quick and efficient and you are greeted with a cool cocktail. We were in our room within 30 minutes and ten minutes later our luggage was delivered. We were in the dreaded ‘C’ block. Why did we worry so much, the rooms were perfect. Large and spacious, clean and no damp smell. The beds were super soft, we even had controls to alter the softness! Mini bar was always stocked up daily, you had a choice of four spirits and the rooms were cleaned twice daily with a turn down service as well. We overlooked the garden and had a sea view as well.
The hotel was spotless and you felt like royalty walking around the hotel. It was always being cleaned
We spent most of our time around the pool or on the beach and it does not matter what time you get there you WILL get a sunbed. The hotel was full both weekends we were there and there were plenty of sun beds for everyone. You may not always get a sun umbrella but there is plenty of natural shade everywhere. As for getting up early in the morning, yes you do if you want a certain spot on the beach or pool. We only done this twice as we planned to spend the whole day and part evening on the beach or pool, otherwise don’t bother you will get a sun bed no mater what time you get up.
The pool is great and the swim up bar even better. The only complaint we had was drink cups being left in the swimming pool tables or being spilt in the pool. This is not the hotels fault but American tourists. You may find this an outrageous statement but it is true. The weekends were full mainly due to Americans flying down for a long weekend. At these times the pool was busy, loud and untidy. During the week when they had all gone home, the pool was less busy, quiet and CLEAN. No cups were left on the tables or floating in the pool. FACT. What do these people expect? The bar staff to swim into the pool to pick their cups up they are to lazy to put in the bin or take back to the bar, and why do they have to shout to each other so everyone else can hear their business, can they not just talk like all other human beings?
The food is out of this world. The buffet restaurant was superb, so much choice all freshly cooked and such friendly staff. Yes you do have to queue up in the mornings if you want to dine at one of the speciality restaurants, but how else are you supposed to book? This way it makes sure people don’t just block book the restaurant and don’t turn up. We only tried on of these, it was good but we preferred the buffet.
All the staff in the hotel was friendly and hard working and could not have worked harder if they tried.
The beach was great not too packed even when busy.
Back to the hotel, and it truly was a palace. We had to pinch ourselves at times to believe we were actually here.
Yes the entertainment at times was like watching auditions of Britain’s Got Talent!, but we weren’t there for the entertainment, but it did make you laugh at times. Some of the shows were good and well worth watching.
Overall, this is a Five Star hotel with five star staff. We would definitely go back and would recommend this hotel to all. Don’t believe the negative reviews, go for it!

We stayed at the Riu Palace Aruba for 2 weeks. It was sold to us as a 5 star resort, but it is not.
Although facilities are good, it is no where near 5 star level. Our rooms (we stayed with 5 people) were 3 star at the very very best.
The carpet was old and dirty, the shower fell apart, dirty walls, lots of damage to the trim, no seating area, a TV from 1985 with very poor signal, no standard internet in the room (only at USD 25,=/day you can get it), very poor finishing of everything and it smelled bad in the rooms. Very strange, the wardrobe was in the shower, no doors. It is impossible to keep your clothes dry and not becoming moist. There were not enough coat hangers (we only had 5), staff told us they would resolve it the next day by getting them from oher guests rooms. They did resolve it for us, I feel sorry for the other guests.
The airconditioning is also an old system, you only have fan and warmer or cooler, you cannot set it to a temperature. Come on this is 2010.
We complained about the poor rooms and mentioned that we paid for 5 star and demanded a better room. The Hotel was not interested and seamed deaf to our complaints, you guessed it, we never got a better room or compensation.
The Hotel has 2 buffet restaurants and 3 signtaure restaurants (french, italian and japanese style). The buffet restaurants are good and serve the food that you expect at a buffet place, is it 5 star? You can question that. The signature restaurants are poor, don't go there, they are no where near 5 star level.
Be very carefull if you walk on the floors in the Hotel ad surrounding facilities. They are very slippery in the dry and many guests fell and hurt themselves. Imagine the floors being wet, its like an ice hockey field.
I live in Europe, but also travel a lot to North America. I read some comments on tripadvisor about the staff being unfriendly and not giving good service. Having visited them I can understand why many Americans feel this way. For US standard it is poor, however for European standards its OK.
The staff is initially not the friendliest in their first aproach, however we had the feeling that they are kept tight by hotel management. We starting joking around with them and ask them about advise on things to do on the Island. They were very helpfull and gave us good recommendations and loosened up quickly.
We have some friends living on the island so we made some phonecalls with the Hotel phone. DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!! They totally rip you off. They charge around USD 5,= /minute to landline connection and a staggering USD 8,=/min to cellphones. These rates or nowhere indicated. We asked our friends if Aruba cellphone rely was that expensive, its not, its actually cheap. They only charge around USD 0,30/min. The Hotel makes a outrageous profit on the calls. We complaint heavily, but staff was not willing to even listen it looked that they did not even care.
A huge problem is the lack of parasols at the pool and the beach in combination with a social behavior of some guests, see other comments on trip advisor. All parasols are reserved before 6:00 in the morning, blocking any access to it for any other guests. If you want one you have to get up rely early, not the thing you had in mind when you go on holiday.
Hotel has to resolve this problem quickly, many guest are very annoyed by this. They have to put up a lot more parasols.
Was it all bad? No. Pool is good, beach is excellent and only 30 yards from most rooms.
Would we go again. No way. You can better book the Radisson or the Westin who are right next door. If you have more to spend, you can also book the Hyatt, 100 yards down the road.

  • Advice: Book the radisson,Westin or Hyatt next door, you are better off and its on the same beach.

We have just come back from 2 weeks...

We have just come back from 2 weeks of luxury! We booked our holiday 4wks prior to travelling and on arrival we had been allocated a junior suite which was very nice! The maid came in every morning and changed towels and made beds up etc, unsure of how many times the bedding was changed but it always felt clean so it could have been daily. We also came back after our evening meals and most nights had fresh towels. The in room bar was topped up on a daily basis. The food was fantastic, the buffet restaurant (Don Nicholas) had excellent food and I managed to try foods I'd never had before (eg caviar, frogs legs & many more dishes), never had a bad meal. We tried all 4 a la carte restaurants which were all very nice, the food in Krystal (Gourmet) was excellent! If you go to Nautilas (Steakhouse) the 6.30 sitting is nice, you sit on the terrace area at the side of the beach as the sun sets, quite romantic. We spent most evenings in Barry's Bar where the Jude the bar man provided an excellent service. The island is a very windy island but that is nice as it keeps you from overheatin, well almost as it is very hot as well! It is a bit of a pain for us ladies with long hair and a need for lipgloss! You may read on other websites reviews that it whips the sand up, this only happens with big gusts, not pleasant but it certainly doesn't ruin your holiday! We are not early risers and as stated on some other review websites it is difficult to get a bed round the pool with a parasol if you aren't up early and most of the beach huts are taken but there were plenty of palm trees on the beach that we found to shade me (I'm fair skinned & burn very easily so need shade). We only did 2 trips, we did the helicoptor tour of the island which is by far the best way to see the island, we also did sea trek on De Palm island, which is where you wear a divers helmet and walk 25 feet underwater, very good experience but was a bit disappointed with De Palm island itself which you have to do book to be able to do sea trek! It is a very safe place to go outside the hotel and if you are approached by time share reps a polite no I'm not interested and they wish you a good day a leave you alone, we were only approached 2 or 3 times in the whole 2wks. We went into Oranjestaad (the capital) by bus which was very easy and there is a return ticket for $2.30 which was very reasonable, the buses run about every half an hour. If you are looking for a holiday of total relaxation with nice food & drink this is the place to go, its the best holiday I've ever had. It was the 2nd Riu hotel we'd stayed in and thought the 1st was good but this was even better! Go for it you won't regret it, we didn't want to come home!
