Basic but perfect location

Astreas is very basic, with no frills so don’t expect the same standard as full board accomodation but despite this it is in a perfect location, the staff are lovely and there is someone manning the reception 24-hours if you need something. It is literally a few seconds walk from Fig Tree beach and the start of the coastal walk around the right hand side of the bay, which I would definitely recommend going on one evening.
It is also just around the corner from one of the best local taverna’s Nikolas’(you won’t find many authentic taverna’s in Protaras) Romeo’s and Parko also do really nice Greek food.
When I got to Astreas I must admit it was nothing like the description in the holiday brochure. The decore is somewhat outdated and there was a tile hanging off in the bathroom but the appartment was cleaned daily and the towels and bed linen changed two/three times a week.
I had a balcony on the first floor and had a really nice view of the beach. The appartments were a lot quieter than others I’ve heard about in the area and I got a good night’s sleep every night without much disruption but I don’t know how much this would change during the height of Summer as my holiday started at the beginning of June.
Astreas has a lovely bakery on the ground floor where they make pastries and deserts. You can also get a really nice salad there for £3-euros. I'd definitely recommend the bakery if you want to get a quick snack for lunch every day.
The pool is really clean and has a poolside bar where you can sit in the pool and enjoy a drink at the same time. There were plenty of sun loungers but again I don’t know how much this will change in the middle of Summer.
If you like staying active on your holiday I would recommend getting a couple of trips in and exploring the island as Protaras is very much aimed at the beach loving tourist and there isn’t much to see. I would recommend going to Famagusta and Kyrenia in the North as both are very pretty and traditional. The Thomas Cook Island Tour is also worth a try as they take you up into the Troodos mountains and other quaint little villages where they make wine and other goods. They do have a really good bus service in Cyprus though which runs practically all night and is £2-euros for a day pass if you want to do the trips on your own.

Brilliant two weeks.

We have just had the last two weeks of June at the Astreas and it was brilliant.
The hotel is right on the beach and just two minutes from the main street of the resort.
We had a one bedroom apartment overlooking the sea and the pool. It was VERY hot while
we were there (30 - 37 as far as we could tell from the locals and the TV weather) so we
were very glad it was breezy/windy a lot of the time. The staff were very friendly and
helpful. The cleaning/maintenance staff fixed a couple of minor problems we had VERY
quickly and happily. The apartment was just a little bit 'scruffy'
but nothing that in any way spoiled our holiday. The cleaning was done every day, the
towels changed every other day and the bedding changed every three days. The pool/bar/dining area was very clean and the staff and the food very nice. The sunbeds
around the pool are getting quite tatty/broken though and certainly need replacing. Also,
the parasols are a sort of 'mesh' fabric so they don't block out the sun completely which
is not good when the sun is so strong. We swam every day, either in the pool or in the sea. The sea was so clear - nearly as clear as pool water - and so warm. We ate out the whole time and there are some lovely restaurants in the resort - but everywhere seemed a little bit expensive. We changed sterling for euros in the main street and got 116.5 euros to the £ (on 22/6).
We did a three day Mini Cruise to Israel in the middle of the holiday and that was superb. We went to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the Wailing Wall, etc. VERY interesting and nice to have a little trip out as we were there for two weeks. All in all a brilliant holiday. I would recommend the Astreas for location and also very nice staff throughout the hotel.

I am writing this review because I have just booked for my husband and I to return to the Astreas next June. We had a wonderful 2 week holiday there in June this year and couldn't fault it. After spending the last 4 years visiting Turkey we were a little apprehensive about trying somewhere new - we needn't have worried. We are in our sixties, both still work and like to combine sightseeing with a relaxing holiday. We had a fantastic apartment with a balcony overlooking the beach. It was quiet, relaxing and very clean. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful but 'not in your face' at all. One of the highlights of our visit (apart from the cruise to Egypt we had booked in advance) was, from our balcony, watching the boats sail out to the sunrise for the summer solstice, what a spectacular sight and such wonderful colours. Fig Tree Bay is a wonderful beach and we were able to get sunbeds by the waters edge leave our things there and stroll back to our apartment for lunch on the balcony making it a truly relaxing time. The sea is fantastic for a poor swimmer like me as you can walk out a long way before being out of your depth and can only be likened to a 'warm bath'. We are not 'pool' people but the Astreas pool is lovely with a good pool bar and friendly staff. Food in the local restaurants is excellent although we were a little shocked by the high prices at first (compared to Turkey). The only disappointment is that this time we have had to book with Manos (Thomas Cook) not Olympic and it is quite a lot more expensive - but worth it!

The apartments themselves are very basic but as you will be spending 90% of your waking time by the excellent pool or on the fantastic beach at Fig Tree bay, this is not a problem. Our towels were changed very day and our beds made with the kids toys being placed on their pillows as an extra touch.
The reception staff are very friendly and helpful if you make an effort to get to know them.
The beach bar is staffed by a chap from Mongolia who was one of the nicest people I have ever met and he speaks 8 languages and is doing an MBA at Nicosia University, so a bright man.
The snack bar near the pool is excellent value and the food is superb. The little Bulgarian waitress who works there is an absolute star and deserves as many tips as possible.
The water quality at the beach is amazing and I would recommend getting a snorkel set and head out to the rock to see a hige variety of fish and other creatures. the beach is also shallow so very safe for kids.
For Eats I would recommend the Olympus on the the walk from the apartment to the main strip, fantastic food and they love kids. We ate their 6 nights out of seven because they were so good.
All in all a fantastic holiday and highly recommended for the week we stayed in late May. The temp was 35 degrees but was nice with the breeze you get in the afternoon.

We have just returned from a fortnights stay at the Astreas Beach Hotel Apartments in Protaras, Cyprus. We were worrying before we went as these apartments are classed as a 2.5 star but we need not have worried. These apartments are brilliant.
The rooms are spacious, well equipped and cleaned daily, the pool is large enough with 2 children’s pools and a lovely pool man called Yanush from Poland who only put 2 inches of water in one of the children’s pools on a daily basis so our baby could crawl in it. There is a cafe which serves lovely fresh food and drinks and a poolside bar with seating in the pool.
It is less than a 2 minutes walk to the end of Fig Tree Bay beach with a lovely cove to fish or paddle which is safe enough for kids and enough watersports to keep everybody happy.
The hotel itself is about a 2 minutes walk of "The Strip" which makes it close enough to go to all the bars and restaurants but quiet enough for the kids to sleep with the windows open. (This is the opposite end of "The Strip" to McDonalds, passed the fountain, if anyone has been to Protaras before).
I would definitely go back to these apartments again and would recommend them to anyone of any age. (We went in a party of 10, the eldest being 60 and the youngest 10 months)
