We wanted a hotel close to the illuminations for my son who's 3 years old. The Queensgate hotel couldn't have been any closer, being on the promenade the illuminations were outside the hotels windows. The hotel service was exceptionally good and the staff were the... more

We got out alive!!! Change your booking now!!
Where can I begin!! The list of complaints is endless! We stayed from Friday till Sunday, and hated every minute!!! On arrival, we were greeted by an empty reception, dirty wooden panelling and missing ceiling tiles. The hotel has a musty unclean smell! We had a group of 8 in 4 rooms. None of these rooms came close to being acceptable!! All rooms were out dated and drab (we were afraid to take our shoes off!). We decided to stay as we were on a budget and it was only for two nights. The facilities in the room were antiques and plugs were missing from some appliances. We reported two problems to staff on arrival, one was a door that would not lock, this was sorted out to our satisfaction after intoxicated staff worked out how to do it!! The other problem was a "leaking radiator" on the first floor landing, this was so bad you found yourself skidding down the hallway. This was fixed by placing a metal milk jug under the leak (no this is not a joke!). The Lounge - if you do plan on staying here even after this review, take this advice! Drink bottles! Do not under any circumstances drink from the taps as it disgusting! The atmosphere was depressing, we felt watched and out cast. The staff made no effort to make you feel at home. Breakfast - after a 15 minute wait we were asked if we wanted “full English", this was not a full English as we were informed that there would not be toast, as the toaster had caught fire that morning. This was fixed by the next day. The food was adequate; the dining room was dirty and dangerous. A section was closed at the front; we were told that when it rains the roof is a hazard! Checkout - Thank god! Check out is at 10.30, but don’t plan on leaving any earlier. Groups over three have to pay a damage deposit of £20. Before you can recover this you have to wait in the reception area until someone has checked and cleaned your room!! This delayed us further and we didn’t end up leaving until 11am. At check out a complaint was made about the hotel, this was dismissed and no compensation was offered. To the management - if you read this review please take on board these comments and note you will never have a review from me again because I will never stay again. For £26 a night a tent on the beach would've been preferable. To readers - please change your booking; do not stay at this hotel. Rest assured that everything in this review is 100% true and the management responses read like fiction. To other reviewers who gave a good review - what were you thinking??
Management response from blackpooldave 18 Oct 2006

We are certainly not homphobic at the Queensgate so can only guess that the other guests in the hotel did not make you welcome. My managers do remember your group and thought that you wanted to be by yourselves. Due to the time delay in reading these comments I can only think that this is the weekend after some horrendous thunderstorms, which at the front of the building did bring down a few ceiling tiles and soaked the floor just before the weekend, which will account for the musty smell. I have stayed overnight since with my family and can assure you there was no evidence of musty smells or of an unclean appearance. Yes some of the bedrooms do have dated but workable artifacts (but not as valuable as antiques). My managers do not recall you mentioning any of the plugs missing! I am glad that you reported the two problems to staff on arrival, the door that would not lock, and was glad that it was sorted out to your satisfaction. And the "leaking radiator" on the first floor landing, which had a temporary solution until we could contact a plumber. I cannot see how you could be possibly skidding down a hallway!! The Lounge - is one of our most popular areas in the hotel, where Alan takes great pride in his beers and a meeting place with a great party atmosphereat weekends. Obviously the party atmosphere does not suite everybody. If the hotel is busy there could be a 15 minute wait but that is the exception rather than the rule. I don't understand the toaster situation there are 3 toasters in the hotel - could this be a misunderstanding? The dining room is not dirty nor dangerous. The front part of the dining area was restricted due to the same problem that the front lounge had and was done as a precaution. We have gone through srtingent Health and Safety precautions and have passed these. Because we are a party hotel and accept that some boistrous activities can cause damage we like most similar hotels charge a damage deposit, which is refundable when the room has been checked, not cleaned, that would take until Monday morning working through the night!! Any complaints should be put in writing and if valid there will be a refund. Managers cannot give money back to guests that chose the wrong hotel. I notice that the reviewer is unfairly trying to put everybody off the hotel, for the vast majority of guests it is ideal and if there is justice in this world I may be seeing a tent pitched on the beach in the near future.
