Thornton Hall Classic Hotel Reviews

1 / 10
Oct 2006, Mrs S Cherico

We had the worst hotel stay of our lives, although we had a 5 month old in a pram and we had booked a double with a cot we were given a twin room on the first floor. There was no lift and so we had to struggle up the stairs with the baby. There was no cot in the room, and... more

daughters wedding
a perfect day from beginning to end was had by everyone on the 14thOct 06 for my daughter Linzi and Telly's wedding. From when first booked the Italian room over 2years ago the wedding organiser Sam and staff advised and helped us all the way-it was helped by us attending many organised wedding fayre's at the Torintino suite also part of the hotel. Sam obliged us with special dietary needs and wines/champagne etc-being able to try various drink/food samples is excellent. The day itself went so smoothly without any problems at all-no waiting around-everything flowed with Jeanie the manager/toast master guiding the day/evening perfectly-Joe keepng the champagne/wine flowing and all catering/bar staff being so cheerful and obliging-all our guests praised the friendliness of everyone. Guests who slept the night throughly enjoyed their room and breakfast-unfortunately no one other than myself! was in a fit condition to enjoy the swimming pool/gym/jacuzzi etc in the health spa. No small pokey rooms at Thornton Hall! the surrounding gardens are lovely with the Pagoda so picturesque. Again thanks to everyone for a perfect day-we all want to do it again .Jean & Ron
Service excellence
Stayed at this hotel on business last week. All the staff were extreamly helpful, they all made me feel so at home. Fabulous food in the restaurant, this alone makes this hotel worth a repeat visit. The spa is outstanding, the only down side was being on business I had limited time to enjoy this. I will definitely return with my wife to take full advantage of these facilities. If you are a fan of great customer service this hotel is a must!
Wedding @ Thornton Hall
Just attended a friends wedding at Thornton Hall in the Torrinton suite. Lovely day, brillant food and the staff during the meal were polite and freindly. On our arrival, the receptionist was very helpful, allowing us to check into our room a little earlier than usual, even asking the cleaning staff to complete our rooms first as they had been occupied the previous evening. The lady at reception in the Spa was lovely and showed you to the changing rooms making you feel very welcome. However, the room we stayed in was not of the standard I would of expected from a 'superior' hotel. There was no mini bar, the bathroom was grubby, the shower was rubbish (the showers in the Spa were great though, with lovely products to use) and it was so dark you had to have the lights on all the time - a bit of a nightmare when putting your make-up on for the actual wedding!! The wedding itself was fantastic and everyone throughly enjoyed themselves until the bar closed and we headed to the so called '24 hour bar'. On arrival our non-residential friends were turned away by 4 bouncers - YES, that's what I said, BOUNCERS!! They were told to leave and that they couldn't go to our rooms with us either - bloody cheek! Then when the remaining residents were asked to produce our room cards, we got a lecture on why they weren't the right cards and it should be the card the room card came in...who's ever heard of that at a hotel?? One member of our party turned away in disgust at this request as he hadn't ever been told that we needed to do this, he headed towards the exit when one of the bouncers chased him, telling him to keep his opinions to himself in a completely agressive manner!! I just can't belive he ran after him! Can you believe this is a hotel we're talking about here and not a frigging VIP night club!! We did feel fairly threatened and the other bouncers were just laughing at us stood there in amazement. They did let the rest of us into the bar after this, where it was closed. When we asked the man behind the bar why this was closed, he was really angry and confrontational. We stated that we were only asking the question as it's advertised at 24 hours and it wasn't unreasonable of us to do so, following which he calmed down a bit. We were then 20mins later than the 11am check out time when we got a rude call from the receptionist telling us that we had to leave - unbelievable. I have never experianced such aggression from night staff, the words customer service obviously do not feature in their vocabulary. I will never go back to this hotel, although the only redeming feature was that some of the staff were nice. Just don't try and have a drink in the evening.
Fabulous!
Ive just had my wedding at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa and it was fabulous from beginning to end! The staff were warm, friendly....nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed a morning of amazing spa treatments on the day of my wedding and I walked out looking (and feeling) a million dollars! It was really handy having everything "under the one roof" as the last thing I wanted to do was find hairdressers close by etc. It made my day run really smoothly and de-stressed me before the actual wedding. We were married in the pagoda which is set in the most incredible surroundings and enjoyed the rest of the day in the very impressive Torrintone Suite. The food was absolutely 1st rate and the service was the best I have experienced in a long time. The day after the wedding we all enjoyed a morning of relaxation in The Health club before leaving for our honeymoon.........just great! I would most definately recommend this hotel to anyone planning a wedding or just simply to enjoy some R&R!
British estate, American feel
For those that have to been to America, especially CA, you'll know what i mean. Rooms were spacious, 2 sofa's, good sized bed and space around, bathroom clean and large enough, but there is a feel that they haven't been decorated for several years. It is worth noting that we stayed in an annex, the rooms in the main hotel were very different, with some great original features. The grounds were delightful, the location perfect, just a short stop from Chester and Merseyside. Heswall is near by with several excellent restaurants, and just a £4 taxi ride away. Staff were excellent, very friendly, and welcoming. Breakfast was self service full english, the real american feel, but good quality and in a nice spacious room. Would recommend this for a laterooms special, but the full £150 tariff does seem a bit OTT.
Family Wedding
We attended a family wedding and stayed the night in this most fantastic hotel. The staff were great, nothing was too much trouble. The wedding was first class, ceremony in the beautyfull garden Pagoda followed by meal in the new function suite and then a great party afterwards. Many thanks to everyone involved.
Poor welcome
Overpriced. Poor value for money. Queried rates on arrival as other guests were quoted higher rates. We were given one figure on booking in, but higher figure charged when booking out. Reception staff almost aggressive when prices challenged, even though they had changed the verbal figure quoted. Did not want to know. Unfortunately other people had booked for us, so we had nothing in writing to back up our case.
Wedding and accommodation venue
I got married, at the venue, apart from the:- Luggage getting pinched out of the bedroom. Cold coffee served at the wedding breakfast. False promises for the hotel team Demanding accounts team, with little empathy. Bar staff who could not be bothered to obtain extra lemons to serve in drinks. The bedroom suite with a poorly decorated bathroom it was ok........... Food was good. Some members of staff cared The Wirral needs a better selection of hotels.
Country house hotel
We stayed one night in this hotel, December 2004. Our room was in an annex to the hotel (i.e. not in the old part). It was a good size room and had a balcony (which looked out on some building work). The decor was busy and outdated to say the least. The carpet was a blue pattern of one design, the curtains were orange and blue swirl of a different design and the wall paper was green and blue stripes. The bathroom floor was lino. Apart from the size, I did not think the room was of a four star standard and there was no minibar. My partner was impressed with the leisure facilities, but I did not use them so cannot comment. The old part of the hotel was very nice, particularly the room that breakfast was served in. The breakfast was a buffet and there was a good choice. Overall I thought the hotel was ok, but the rooms need updating. Probably would not stay here again as I did not think it was worth the money.
Thornton Hall - Classic English Estate
If you want to experience England in a formal English atmosphere Thornton Hall is a very good place. very formal atmosphere with good food (except the burgers - they are terrible!). I stayed there two weeks in Dec '03 and enjoyed the stay. Located in a country setting with several good pubs and restaurants nearby. The health club and pool are first rate. Stay in the main house if possible but avoid the holiday season if you want peace and quiet. The sounds from the parties resonate to the rooms upstairs. Definitely old English. 2 good pubs, 1 restaurant in the hotel. Croquet court & patio in back.
