Uncle George Apartments Reviews

Wonderful

Nov 2011, A lovebird

My boyfriend and I stayed self-catering at Uncle George apartments for a week. The rooms are basic and clean- all we were expecting for the price- but our holiday was made by the people. Kostas couldn't do enough for us and treated us like old friends, and the food is delicious- so much so that we ate there almost every day.
I'm surprised another reviewer has said they were ignored because they were self-catering, as that's totally the opposite of our experience! The whole family were very friendly.
The apartments are in a good spot close to the beach, and there's a bus stop across the road to take you to Heraklion.
It was ideal for us, and we're hoping to go back again another year.

Right next to the beach. rooms adequate (beds comfy, shower and toilet ok, aircon available on request - 5 euro per day). Food is not from menu if you've booked half-board, but you will have an a very good 3 course meal of traditional Cretan food cooked by the owners Mum which you will love. Something different every night and always good quality. Great characters who are always happy to chat with you. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did as we will be going back for many years to come.

  • Advice: you will find that your room and choice of meal will equate with what you have paid for your holiday - so if you have managed to get a bargain you will not get a room in the Taverna and your food choice and extras will be limited - eg no raki

When I booked this holiday, I had not checked this websites' reviews, and I am glad I did not, as at that time, there were negative reports. I am so glad I booked the room here. Yes, the room is basic, but it was clean and spacious. Yep. I got the fridge wit the door that did not close. I asked, and within an hour it was replaced. Yep, the shower rests in the cradle on the taps. So do 90% of showers in low-cost rooms in Greece. Kostas and his wife were great. The food was excellent and fairly priced. It was located only 150mtrs from the clean, very long beach, and bars and supermarkets all within walking distance, including a cinema with recently released English films! Additional small plates of food and raki were always offered at no extra cost. sheets changed once in the middle of the week (why expect more than that?),Towels changed twice, bathroom bin 3 times. No complaints as far as that is concerned. On my last morning I had coffee with Kostas, and a Dutch couple who were there for their 10th year running! That must tell you something about the place. If you do accept reviews as part of your trip plans - that's OK, I do too. But read carefully and see how many good ones outweigh the bad ones.

Im suprised at the negative reviews.
Just returned from a weeks stay and it was lovely.
Kostas and Artimis were the perfect hosts and couldnt do enough for you and made me feel like i was part of the family. The apartment i stayed in was perfectly clean and the food at the family taverna was great.
I would recomend this to anyone who wants a typical greek/cretan holiday in a nice area with wonderfull hosts.

The service provided by costas was the best service i have ever had. we stayed half board and its not like a normal half board our food was cooked when we wanted it and the quality was excellent. Costas (owner) even offered to drive us around if we wanted to go visit anywhere - ever had that from a hotel owner!?
the rooms were adequate with a pretty decent view, balcony was of good size and got sun in the morning and of an evening.
Beach is literally a 30second walk, it has all the water sports needed.
i will definately be going again and it will be to the uncle george apartments!
Costas even got a little upset that we were leaving and bought us a bottle of house red - again you dont get that kind of service normally!

We arrived and our room was not booked, we were given a room being one of the roughest rooms i have ever been in. We were treated very unfairly, as booked for self-catering, i felt we were'nt acknowledged and ignorned. Our holiday was ruined by this and this has put us off returning back to Ammoudara.

I was very surprised to read the negative reports about Uncle George appartments.
Have just returned from 2wks in Ammoudara staying at Castro Hotel(lovely clean friendly hotel) During our stay we were aware of potential delays of our return due to the volcanic ash cloud and having eaten several times at Uncle Georges, and having been given a tour of the appartments we,(3friends,all 50+ age group)were planning to book into Uncle Georges if we could not return to UK on our due date.
The appartments are clean & well furnished with living area providing a kitchenette, dining area & 2 single beds plus a settee which would make an extra single bed. A good sized balcony overlooks either the restaurant or a quiet side road to the beach which is 150yds away.Larger appartments also provide an additional twin bedded room. The shower rooms are tiled attrativelly & everywhere was spotlessly clean.
The food in Uncle Georges restaurant is good, much of it cooked by Costas' elderly mother. We normally ordered main course only but were given assorted dips (tsazaki, aubergine paste, spicy cheese)with our bread for starters which cost us the pricely sum of 1euro per head,& an assorment of sweets which were free of charge. Raki always follows the meal compliments of Costas (or served by one of his lovely daughters)& for those of us who did not like Raki an alternative cocktail was offered (the almond flavoured ammoretto was my personal favourite) On Sundays we were invited for lunchtime coffee & nibbles & to meet mother who is the beautiful, outgoing head of the family.
Overall I cannot see how anyone can complain about the appartments, food,or friendly welcome at Uncle Georges and would definetly stay there if I return to this resort.Give it a try, I don't think you will be disapointed. ps.contary to one report I read, there is a rooftop pool at the appatments although Ican't rate this as it not open early season in May when I visited.

My family, including 2 children aged 11 and 8 stayed here in August 09 and we are thinking of returning next year. Costas and his wife Artemis are the nicest people you will ever meet and made us all very welcome especially the children. The apartments are what you would expect from anywhere in greece in the same price range and consist of everything you need on a self catering basis. We only really use the apartments to sleep in, so spend very little time in them, but it had a lovely little balcony to sit out on for a night cap before heading to bed! We ate in the restaurant downstairs on numerous occasions from breakfast to evening meal and found the food very nice with the children also loving the little touches of greek flags stuck in their food!! If we needed anything for the apartment ie toilet rolls, towels etc all we had to do was ask - nothing was too much trouble for them. The apartments are a couple of minutes walk from the beach which is nice, its got a couple of bars and a shop etc for food and drink. Its also got a range of watersports. Amoudara itself is a nice little place with plenty of tavernas, bars and shops. The only downfall of this resort is the traffic on the road that runs through Amoudara, its quite hard to cross at times and the driving leaves a lot to be desired. A big thanks to Costas and Artemis for making us so welcome.

We booked this half board last October but upon arrival were told by Artemis (wife of owner) that they didn't have a room for us. Instead they placed us in a room with a tiny balcony overlooking a building site a few buildings down in Coral Apartments. Not a good start.
I would suggest that unless you book direct and are a regular customer you wont necessarily get a room in Uncle George Apartments itself. I will leave you to figure out the probable reasons for this.
The food was good but not outstanding with no choice of meals. Unlike some other reviews we did not get desert at all and only 'free' raki on the first three days and then it stopped.
The owner (Costas) also appeared to drop hints the entire holiday that times were tough etc culminating three days before our due departure that he was having to pay the owner of Coral Apartments 5 Euro a day 'out of his own pocket' for us to stay there. This was ironic bearing in mind the that room had a view of a building site and it was not the room we had booked ten months earlier.
My family and I were also publicly embarrassed by Costas in front of other guests at dinner saying they dont serve British people (done twice) and also he said that there was no main meal on another night. I can take a joke but this was done in a poor taste and I got the feeling he was laughing at and not with us. Not a good way to treat customers.
We were made to feel so uncomfortable we left two days early. Amoudara is OK but food etc is overpriced, streets/beach are both dirty and the sea is so choppy you can't swim in it that easily.
In short, save your money and go somewhere else.
