" Typically Greek With Perfect Hosts "

My family, including 2 children aged 11 and 8 stayed here in August 09 and we are thinking of returning next year. Costas and his wife Artemis are the nicest people you will ever meet and made us all very welcome especially the children. The apartments are what you would expect from anywhere in greece in the same price range and consist of everything you need on a self catering basis. We only really use the apartments to sleep in, so spend very little time in them, but it had a lovely little balcony to sit out on for a night cap before heading to bed! We ate in the restaurant downstairs on numerous occasions from breakfast to evening meal and found the food very nice with the children also loving the little touches of greek flags stuck in their food!! If we needed anything for the apartment ie toilet rolls, towels etc all we had to do was ask - nothing was too much trouble for them. The apartments are a couple of minutes walk from the beach which is nice, its got a couple of bars and a shop etc for food and drink. Its also got a range of watersports. Amoudara itself is a nice little place with plenty of tavernas, bars and shops. The only downfall of this resort is the traffic on the road that runs through Amoudara, its quite hard to cross at times and the driving leaves a lot to be desired. A big thanks to Costas and Artemis for making us so welcome.

Advice: Great place to stay - just watch out crossing the roads!

Activities: Beach, Eating out and a great little train ride into the mountain village is great.

Good for: Beach

" Unpleasant "

We booked this half board last October but upon arrival were told by Artemis (wife of owner) that they didn't have a room for us. Instead they placed us in a room with a tiny balcony overlooking a building site a few buildings down in Coral Apartments. Not a good start.
I would suggest that unless you book direct and are a regular customer you wont necessarily get a room in Uncle George Apartments itself. I will leave you to figure out the probable reasons for this.
The food was good but not outstanding with no choice of meals. Unlike some other reviews we did not get desert at all and only 'free' raki on the first three days and then it stopped.
The owner (Costas) also appeared to drop hints the entire holiday that times were tough etc culminating three days before our due departure that he was having to pay the owner of Coral Apartments 5 Euro a day 'out of his own pocket' for us to stay there. This was ironic bearing in mind the that room had a view of a building site and it was not the room we had booked ten months earlier.
My family and I were also publicly embarrassed by Costas in front of other guests at dinner saying they dont serve British people (done twice) and also he said that there was no main meal on another night. I can take a joke but this was done in a poor taste and I got the feeling he was laughing at and not with us. Not a good way to treat customers.
We were made to feel so uncomfortable we left two days early. Amoudara is OK but food etc is overpriced, streets/beach are both dirty and the sea is so choppy you can't swim in it that easily.
In short, save your money and go somewhere else.

Advice: Dirty, Shabby and Expensive. 7.50 Euro for a Burger and Chips

Activities: Hiring a car for two days and exploring Chania, Agilous Nikolaus and the mountains.

Good for: Beach

" Disappointed "

I would not recommend this place to anyone!
On arrival we were told the hotel was full, I offered my passport but all we were told was fully booked, after 10 mins of trying to get into my email via my mobile my friend saw the arrival sheet with my name on it!!! We were taken to the room which was very good and unexpected, on entering the room the light bulb didn't work so the lady moved it around a bit and it eventually came on! The I noticed the fridge didn't closed so I mentioned this to the girl who told me to balance my suitcase against it to keep it closed! Where there once was a magnectic strip and paint on the fridge, was now pure rust so I'm not suprised it wouldn't close!
We were offered food on the first night (we arrived at 11pm) but decided not to inconvenience the chef as the restaurant was empty, we went out for a drink to relax.
The next day we woke up to find the toilet hanging off the wall, this was fixed immediatley but should it have been checked first?
We were on half board and didn't have a choice of breakfast or dinner, maybe they should at least offer a selection of cereal instead of bread, ham, cheese and tomatoes everyday! Dinner was bland and only just edible, spaghetti bolognese was in-edible though!
I would describle Uncle George apartments as 1 star, not 3! Bathrooms were tiny, toliet seat didn't hold itself up (even after it was fixed back to the wall), you had to hold the shower with one hand whilst trying to wash yourself!!!
I would NOT recommend this Hotel to anyone, we paid £1100 for 2 people for this 10 night break and I am utterly disappointed.

Advice: Amoudara was very quiet for August but it's your typical Greek surroundings

Activities: We did not find a decent restaurant!

" what a traditional greek place to stay "

This hotel is owned by a small greek family, Costas and Artemis. They make you feel extremely welcome and cannot do enough for you. The room was traditional greek, very clean, but the plumbing leaves a bit to be desired. I must say that I think the bin in the toilet where you have to put your used toilet paper should be emptied every, in fact we emptied ours ourselves as the maid only comes in once a week and changes the sheets. Make sure also that you bring some extra toiler roll with you as once you've used up the one and only roll they give you, then you have to go and buy your others from the shop!! Breakfast is typical greek, fresh bread, kerrygold butter, jams, cheese and ham and some very tasty perculated coffee. The meals we had on half board basis were a little bit repetative, Tsasiki every night as a starter and pasta at least three times in the week we were there. You also get a free couple of shots of raki afterwards. Desserts were usually fresh fruit sliced up. The resort itself is really nice, but could do with being tidied up as there seems quite a bit of a mess on some of the side streets. Beach is nice, but again could do with a good clean up. Beach bar (I think it was called Heaven) dont charge for using their sunbeds, but would appreciate you having a drink out of their cafe, but dont feel obliged to (although we some really nice lunches in there). A great bar is across the road called Stellas 2.50 euros large beer and 2.50 glass wine. Bus into Heraklion is 1.50 euros each way, but gets quite packed. Would recommend for a traditional greek feel, although we were the only two tourists in the hotel in May !! Enjoy and Yammas

" Mr & Mrs G Vann "

We recommend these apartments to anyone wanting a good holiday.Although we were self catering we ate every night of our stay in the restaurant as you could not find better food anywhere. This family run business was second to none and the hospitality was excellent. The owners Costas and Artemis welcomed us with open arms and did their very best to make our stay with them memorable.
The one bedroom apartment was very spacious and had everything we needed, it was spotlessly clean with fresh linen etc.
The location was good with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants on the doorstep along with local transport outside the door.
We could not have wished for a better holiday and that was mainly due to the brilliant way we were treated by the owners.
We will certainly be going back again next year.

" This is a fantastic friendly hotel.... "

This is a fantastic friendly hotel. Kostas and Artemis welcome you with open arms and make you feel like you are part of the family. The food is out of this world and make sure you ask Artemis for her feta cheese and garlic bread - heavenly!

Good location, beach is a very short walk away, as are the shops etc. We have been each year for past 3 years and are due to go again Sept 06. Highly recommended for a good relaxing week. Rooms spacious and clean towels every day. Big hello to Georgina and Elvira xx
