We, a family of four, used New York Helmsley as a base for a 6-day pleasure stay on Manhattan. The hotel fully met our service and comfort expectations and at a reasonable price for NYC. Allways a friendly reception when coming back from excursions, cozy well equipped rooms... more

Nice quality hotel with very helpful lobby staff. The city had a taxi strike during our visit and doorman worked really hard to secure transport back to airport for us - thank you. Good location and great views from the front rooms to the Chrysler Building. The hotel is a... more

Stayed at this hotel for 6 nights during new year and I cannot rate this hotel enough...absolutely 1st class. Me, my mum and my 3yr old son travelled, flew with BA and booked the room with ebookers. If you are planning a trip to NYC this hotel is an excellent choice. ... more

This is my second trip to this most fabulous city, this time we changed hotels and it was worth it. The rooms are large and very comfortable, Harrys bar in the hotel is good, the staff very friendly. But for good food at it's very best try the Pax deli next door, is worth a... more

We first stayed here in Feb 2004 when our original hotel had overbooked and we were allocated to this one. What a find! We had a fantastic, large room with all mod-cons. We have stayed here 4 times since then and always request a higher floor room because the views are... more

A fantastic Hotel !!!
I have only today returned from our trip to New York City. It was my first trip to the city so was not too sure what to expect. From the minute we pulled up to the hotel we knew we had picked The lobby is very attractive with a trendy bar/restaurant. Although this is quite expensive the food is very good. There is also a deli type cafe right next door to the hotel which we had breakfast in and a few snacks. The location of the hotel couldnt be better. On East 42nd st places like Times Square, 5th Avenue are only a few munutes walk. It is also nice to have Grand Central Station about a block away so you can get the underground to pretty much any where in the city. Both of our rooms (My family and our friends) were excellant. The rooms looked very well kept and attractive. It was an added bonus as we had a fantastic view of the enitre Christler Building (vertually opposite the hotel). All in all a great hotel and facilities. If I go back to NY I would deffinately stay at the New York Helmsley.
shopping in new york
Stayed at this hotel for the first time over the marathon weekend, I will deffinetly do so again as the room was both spaciouse and clean. The restaurant was a pleasure. Location is quite central with nothing too far away. If your in Manhattan to shop this is the place to stay.
Perfect Midtown location, top-class food
Stayed for 2 nights July-2004. Had a little trouble a check-in; I'd reserved a 2x queen-beds non-smoking room: at first got a smoking-room, changed me to a king-bed non-smoker, but needed a foldaway added for 3rd guest, but this was sorted out within 40 mins of arrival. Public areas & rooms furnished and finished to a high standard. Service typically fast and courteous, quality of food top-class (even the bar-snacks). Jet-lag meant we were eating early so took advantage of the discounted early menu for dinner - top-class food again. Location on 42nd St ideal for sight-seeing. Chrysler building one-side, Daily-News building the other-side. We walked to Empire-State, Grand-Central Station, New-York Library and at the other end of the street is the pier for Circle-line boat tours around 400 Manhattan. Not a cheap hotel, but excellent quality; you get what you pay for. Recommended.
Good location but very run down
The location of the hotel is excellent and the bar/reception/restaraunt area look very nice and modern, however as soon as you leave the lift you realise the hotel has not been renovated in a long time, our room was very clean but the wall paper was peeling off the corner of the wall, the carpet was stained, the bed sheet had holes in it and the paint on the bathroom door was all chipped off. If your looking for modern then this is not the place to be but location is excellent.
Very Comfortable
Stayed in July 2004. Rooms vary in size, but had 2 double beds and nice big bathroom. Clean and comfortable beds. The furniture is a little dated, but everything is nicely kept. The staff was kind and helpful and there's a deli next door and a Kinkos across the street. Great for business. Grand Central is around the corner. I really enjoyed this place. Have stayed here before and will stay again.
Great Stay with good service
Could find no problems with Hotel. We were really pleased with service and friendly staff. Security at night reasuring . Great location for walking to Times Sq and Grand Central station.. Great food in hotel Room service and helpful advice ... 2nd visit to New York,1st at Helmsley. Would stay again no doubt!!.
Better than expected in an refurbished room
My second stay at the Helmsley yesterday was much better than expected. I paid a bit more than I wanted, booking directly at their website. The big surprise was getting room on the 41st floor that has obviously been refurbished. Flat screen TV mounted on the wall and free Internet access were both welcome and a complete surprise. The staff was as in the past very friendly and helpful. As others have said, the restaurant and bar are pretty pricey, but kind of the norm for Midtown hotels.
Great Location
This hotel is conveniently located in midtown manhattan and you can literally walk anywhere. The staff were courteous and quickly checked us in eventhough we arrived at 9:00 a.m. The decor was a little dated but the rooms were large by NYC standards. There also several restaurants located nearby and fifth ave., time square and central park are only a ten minute walk. As Grand Central Station is one block away, you can reach lower manhattan in approximately 10 minutes. This was my first time in NYC and I must say, it was an excellent adventure.
Had a great stay!
Stayed 4 nights, fantastic location!! could walk everywhere, grand central 1 block. Staff very friendly we were checked in straight away, although bar is expensive the food food and drinks were great. Room had amazing view of empire state, very clean, yes decor a little tired but didnt spoil my stay! Had fridge in room but no coffee making facilities, there was fresh tea/coffee every morning in lobby. Complimentary paper delivered to your door every morning. Really nice deli/cafe next door we had breakfast there every morning. Would definatley stay again, locatin could not have been better!!! Seems to be a popular crew hotel which is always a good sign!!!
Pleasantly Surprised
After reading many reviews, I was expecting an old, dirty, and not up to date hotel. Instead I was surprised the minute I saw the place. Compared to most nyc hotels, it was large and had a driveway where you could unload luggage. The lobby was very busy, but did not have many places to sit and rest. When we checked in, we were given an upgrade to a room that normally costs $499; we paid $209. The room was large with two queen beds, extremely clean, a view of the empire state building, and had very luxurious linens and exceptional towels, large and fluffy. We did not eat there nor have drinks, but the lounge was busy each time we went by. The clerk at the front desk was attentive and friendly. I dont know what the lower level room look like or have for amenities, but the upstairs is great. Most of the clientele were older, but there were many young people, with and without families. I would give it another try and hope for another upgrade. thanks
